  • [Title] Experience with adjuvant chemotherapy for pseudomyxoma peritonei secondary to mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix with oxaliplatin/fluorouracil/leucovorin (FOLFOX4).
  • BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare condition characterized by mucinous tumors, disseminated intra-peritoneal implants, and mucinous ascites.
  • So far its diagnosis remains challenging to most clinicians.
  • A large amount of ascites was identified by abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan.
  • Paracentesis showed the appearance of sticky mucinous ascites.
  • There was a lot of mucinous ascites, one appendiceal tumor and multiple peritoneal implants disseminated from the subphrenic space to the recto-vesicle pouch.
  • Pseudomyxoma Peritonei caused by mucinous adenocarcinoma of appendiceal origin, was confirmed by histopathology.
  • After the operation, he received 10 cycles of systemic chemotherapy with FOLFOX4 regimen, without specific morbidity.
  • Follow-up of abdominal CT and colonoscopy at post-operative 17 months showed excellent response without evidence of local recurrence or distal metastasis.
  • CONCLUSION: This case report emphasizes the possible new role of systemic chemotherapy in the treatment of patients with this rare clinical syndrome.

  • [Title] Mucinous histology predicts for poor response rate and overall survival of patients with colorectal cancer and treated with first-line oxaliplatin- and/or irinotecan-based chemotherapy.
  • The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of first-line chemotherapy containing irinotecan and/or oxaliplatin in patients with advanced mucinous colorectal cancer.
  • The population included 255 patients, of whom 49 (19%) had mucinous and 206 (81%) had non-mucinous colorectal cancer.
  • The overall response rates for mucinous and non-mucinous tumours were 18.4 (95% CI, 7.5-29.2%) and 49% (95% CI, 42.2-55.8%), respectively (P=0.0002).
  • After a median follow-up of 45 months, median overall survival for the mucinous patients was 14.0 months compared with 23.4 months for the non-mucinous group (hazard ratio (HR), 1.74; CI 95%, 1.27-3.31; P=0.0034).
  • After adjustment for significant features by multivariate Cox regression analysis, mucinous histology was associated with poor overall survival (HR, 1.593, 95% CI, 1.05-2.40; P=0.0267), together with performance status ECOG 2, number of metastatic sites > or =2, and peritoneal metastases.
  • This retrospective analysis shows that patients with mucinous colorectal cancer have poor responsiveness to oxaliplatin/irinotecan-based first-line combination chemotherapy and an unfavourable prognosis compared with non-mucinous colorectal cancer patients.

  • [Title] Surgical cytoreduction and intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal carcinomatosis arising from the appendix.
  • The aim of our study was to evaluate the results of an aggressive treatment approach used in our institution in the last decade.
  • Treatment consisted of complete surgical cytoreduction of the tumour followed by intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
  • Chemotherapy was either early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC) or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
  • We used Ronnett's classification for tumour grading (disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis = grade 0, peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis with intermediate features = grade 1 and peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis = grade 2).
  • Thirteen patients could not have complete cytoreductive surgery and received no intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
  • CONCLUSION: This therapeutic approach seems both feasible and safe in select patients.
  • Patients with high-grade tumours are poor candidates for this treatment.

  • [Title] Mucinous adenocarcinoma of colon.
  • Bleeding per rectum is a common complaint in pediatric age group and mostly relates to benign conditions.
  • We report two cases of mucinous adenocarcinoma of colon, one in a 9 years old male and other in a female of 12 years.
  • The boy presented with rectal bleeding and increasing constipation of more than three years duration.
  • He had mucinous adenocarcinoma (T3N0MX) of rectosigmoid region and underwent local complete resection of the tumor with colostomy.
  • He also received postoperative chemotherapy and later underwent colostomy reversal.
  • The tumor was resected and biopsy reported as poorly differentiated mucinous adenocarcinoma with positive mesenteric nodes positive for tumor (T3N2MX).
  • She is on chemotherapy.

  • Patients with mucinous colorectal cancer generally have worse prognoses than those with the nonmucinous variety.
  • The reason for this disparity is unclear, but may result from a differential response to adjuvant chemotherapy.
  • We examined known molecular markers for response to common chemotherapy in these two histological subtypes.
  • In all, 21 patients with mucinous and 30 with nonmucinous Dukes C colorectal cancer were reviewed for demographic data and outcome.
  • Quantitative expression levels of drug pathway genes were determined using TaqMan RT-PCR (5-fluorouracil (5-FU): TYMS, DPYD, ECGF1; oxaliplatin: GSTP1 (glutathione S-transferase pi), ERCC1 and 2; irinotecan: ABCB1, ABCG2, CYP3A4, UGT1A1, CES2, TOP1).
  • Mucinous tumours significantly overexpressed both TYMS and GSTP1 relative to nonmucinous tumours and patient-matched normal mucosa.
  • Among patients receiving 5-FU, those with mucinous tumours experienced shorter disease-free survival (DFS) than those with nonmucinous tumours (median DFS 13.8 vs 46.5 months, P=0.053).
  • Mucinous colorectal cancer overexpresses markers of resistance to 5-FU and oxaliplatin.
  • Likewise, DFS may be decreased in patients with mucinous tumours who receive 5-FU.

  • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate downstaging as primary end point, and progression-free survival and overall survival as secondary end points, in rectal adenocarcinoma patients treated with preoperative chemoradiation.
  • METHODS: One hundred and thirty-six extraperitoneal adenocarcinoma patients (33 low rectum T2, 74 T3, 29 T4 [without sacral invasion], 25 with mucinous subtype) were treated with posterior pelvis preoperative radiotherapy (5040 cGy total dose, 180 cGy/fr, 5 fr/w, 10-15 MV linac X-rays) and concomitant 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy.
  • Seventy-four patients received adjuvant chemotherapy.
  • At multivariate analysis only histotype showed correlation with downstaging (hazard ratio = 0.350 and 0.138 - 0.885 95 percent confidence interval) because of the evidence for poor downstaging in mucinous subtype.
  • There were no significant differences in overall survival and progression-free survival between adenocarcinoma and mucinous subtype.
  • CONCLUSIONS: The main finding is that mucinous histology is associated with poor downstaging after preoperative chemoradiation but this poor response was not associated with worse outcome in this small study.
  • The good outcome for mucinous histology is at odds with other reports in the literature and requires further study.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the ability of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography to assess extent of pathologically confirmed rectal cancer response to preoperative radiation and 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy.
  • METHODS: Patients with primary rectal cancer deemed eligible for preoperative radiation and 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy because of a clinically bulky or tethered tumor or endorectal ultrasound evidence of T3 and/or N1 were prospectively enrolled.
  • Positron emission tomography and CT scans were obtained before preoperative radiation and 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy (5,040 cGy to the pelvis and 2 cycles of bolus 5-fluorouracil with leucovorin) and repeated four to five weeks after completion of radiation and 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy.
  • In addition to routine pathologic staging, detailed assessment of rectal cancer response to preoperative radiation and 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy was performed independently by two pathologists.
  • Positron emission tomography parameters studied included conventional measures such as standardized uptake value (average and maximum), positron emission tomography-derived tumor volume (size), and two novel parameters: visual response score and change in total lesion glycolysis.
  • RESULTS: Of 21 patients enrolled, prospective data (pretreatment and posttreatment positron emission tomography, and complete pathologic assessment) were available on 15 patients.
  • All 15 demonstrated pathologic response to preoperative radiation and 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy.
  • This was confirmed in 100 percent of the cases by positron emission tomography compared with 78 percent (7/9) by CT.
  • In addition, one positron emission tomography parameter (visual response score) accurately estimated the extent of pathologic response in 60 percent (9/15) of cases compared with 22 percent (2/9) of cases with CT.
  • CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study demonstrates that fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography imaging adds incremental information to the preoperative assessment of patients with rectal cancer.
  • However, further studies in a larger series of patients are needed to verify these findings and to determine the value of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in a preoperative strategy aimed at identifying patients suitable for sphincter-preserving rectal cancer surgery.

  • BACKGROUND: Although lymph node and liver metastases are recognized as indications for resection of metastatic disease from colorectal cancer, carcinomatosis has not traditionally been regarded as having surgical treatment options.
  • Reports have suggested that complete surgical removal of carcinomatosis combined with thorough irrigation of the peritoneal cavity with chemotherapy could result in longterm survival in selected patients.
  • Eleven clinical and treatment factors were studied in univariate and multivariable analyses using survival as an end point.
  • The difference in negative versus positive lymph nodes was also significant; differences in survival that were improved but not significant were present for age greater than 30 years, mucinous histology, location within the colon versus rectum, and absence of an adverse factor such as cancer perforation or obstruction present at the time of primary cancer resection.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Favorable longterm results of complete cytoreduction in patients treated for carcinomatosis are associated with a limited volume of carcinomatosis observed at the time of cytoreduction and in patients with negative lymph nodes at the time of primary operation.

  • A 39-year-old man came to us for surgical treatment of a hidradenitis suppurativa.
  • Upon excision of a perianal abscess, the diagnosis of a rare tumor, a perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma (pT4, pN 1, MO), was made.
  • An abdominoperineal resection was performed, followed by a combination of adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy.
  • Therefore, the diagnosis is often delayed.
  • In the last 10 years, the carcinoma has mostly been treated by neoadjuvant radiation and chemotherapy, followed by abdominoperineal resection.
  • This is the first case report of a combination of a perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma with a hidradenitis suppurativa.

  • METHODS: All cases of CRC presented to a main countryside referral University hospital (SGH) for cancers in Teheran, Iran between June 20,2000 and January 3,2003 were retrospectively reviewed to determine age, gender, subsite distribution, early symptoms, ethnicity, type of the CRC and the chemotherapy management.
  • RESULTS: A total of 200 patients were included .114 patients (57.0%) were male and 86 were female (43.0%) .Age ranged from 13-90 years with a mean of 55.15+/- 14.5 years.16.5% of patients were below 40 years of age.The tumors were classified as : appendix (n=4), cecum ( n=7), Right Cancers (RC), from the cecum to hepatic flexure (n=1), hepatic flexure ( n=2), Transverse Colon (n=19), Splenic Flexure (n=3), Left Colon (LC) from the Splenic Flexure down to Sigmoid (n=6), Sigmoid ( n=16), Rectum ( n=117), Rectosigmoid & Rectal lesions (n=16), and Colorectal lesions without known locations (n=9).
  • Non-Mucinous Adenocarcinoma was the most common (n=181, 90%), followed by Mucinous AC (n=15), SCC (n=1), Carcinoid (n=1), Melanoma (n=1), Signet ring carcinoma (n=1).
  • The most common presenting symptom was Rectal bleeding ( n=68, 34.5%) .
  • 37% of patients had anemia at the time of diagnosis.
  • 130 of patients underwent chemotherapy and the combination of 5-FU and Leucovorin was predominanat. (n=104, 52%) Younger patients significantly had more Mucinous AC (p=.008) and took more 5-FU.(p=0.05) Conclusions: We have no reports from the Epidemiology of CRC in Iran since 1977. the data suggested a younger age distribution for CRC .
  • we found no significant difference between age, gender and type of cancer with subsite distribution .
  • Distal (left-sided) CRC was more prevalent.
  • 30.5% of patients were diagnosed by screening studies which highly suggests the procedure.

  • Perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma is an unusual but well described malignancy constituting approximately 3 to 11% of all anal carcinoma.
  • The pathology is thought to develop from one of three types, the distal part of the rectum, the mucin-secreting columnar epithelium of the anal glands, and from chronic fistula-in-ano.
  • Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the anus supervening on a long-standing chronic anal fistula is an extremely rare disease with less then 150 cases reported in the literature, mainly single patient reports.
  • Chemotherapy in combination with external beam radiation followed by abdomino-perineal resection seems to be the most appropriate therapy.

  • Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare neoplastic process characterised by progressive intra-abdominal dissemination of mucinous tumour, and generally considered resistant to systemic chemotherapy.
  • Between 2003 and 2006, 40 patients were recruited through a national centre for the treatment of peritoneal surface tumours.
  • Of 39 assessable patients, 15 (38%, 95% confidence intervals (CIs): 25, 54%) benefited from chemotherapy in the form of either reductions in mucinous deposition or stabilisation of progressive pretreatment disease determined on CT scan.
  • Twenty out of 29 assessed patients (69%, 95% CIs: 51, 83%) felt that their Global Health Status improved during chemotherapy.

  • BACKGROUND: Mucinous carcinoma of the colon and rectum (mucinous CRC) is a histological subtype of colorectal adenocarcinoma for which there is little data on chemotherapy responsiveness.
  • The purpose of this study was to investigate specifically the efficacy of fluorouracil-based first-line chemotherapy in patients with advanced mucinous CRC.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients with advanced mucinous CRC enrolled in three prospective randomized trials evaluating infused 5-fluorouracil as first-line treatment were compared with patients with non-mucinous subtypes enrolled in the same trials in a case-control study.
  • Median OS for the mucinous CRC patients was 11.8 months (95% CI, 8.87-14.8) compared with 17.9 months (95% CI, 13.38-22.39) in the control group (univariate analysis, P=0.056); after correcting for significant prognostic factors by multivariate Cox regression analysis, P=0.0372 and hazard ratio (HR)=1.497 (1.02-2.19).
  • CONCLUSION: Patients with advanced mucinous CRC have a poorer response to fluorouracil-based first-line chemotherapy and reduced survival compared with patients with non-mucinous CRC.

  • OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to use MRI to compare the morphologic features of rectal cancer before and 6 weeks after chemotherapy and radiation treatment to correlate the posttreatment MRI appearances with the histologic findings in resected tumors.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: High-resolution T2-weighted MRI was performed before and immediately after a standardized 5-week course of chemoradiation therapy in the care of 30 patients with locally advanced adenocarcinoma of the rectum.
  • The MRI findings after chemoradiation therapy were compared with the histologic findings in the resected specimens with respect to prediction of tumor stage and showing the relation between the tumor and the circumferential margin of resection.
  • MRI was not useful for gauging disease activity of persistent abnormalities in mucinous tumors that often represented inactive mucin lakes.
  • CONCLUSION: Decreases in tumor size and nodal downstaging can be seen on MRI after chemoradiation therapy in approximately two thirds of patients.
  • Errors were caused by the presence of considerable tumor, rectal wall fibrosis, and mucinous tumors.

  • Infliximab, monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha, is an effective agent in the therapy of Crohn's disease.
  • Although therapy with infliximab is generally well tolerated, there is an obvious concern about the effect of this treatment on the incidence of cancer.
  • We report a case of mucinous anorectal adenocarcinoma observed in a 39-year-old patient with long-standing Crohn's disease after therapy with two courses of infliximab.
  • Despite clear margins, the tumor recurred in a few months and progressed during combination chemotherapy.
  • Although there is currently no definitive proof of a causal link between infliximab therapy and cancer, the present observation and other reports in the literature should lead to a careful evaluation of the possibility of increased cancer risk in patients treated with this new agent.

  • Early diagnosis may be difficult due to lack of specific symptoms.
  • Primary diagnostic steps include digital rectal examination, transrectal ultrasound, and transrectal biopsy of the tumour.
  • Adenocarcinoma of seminal vesicles shows no expression of prostate-specific antigen or prostate-specific acid phosphatase, but there may be expression of carcinoembryonic antigen and cancer antigen 125.
  • Radical surgery including radical prostatectomy and/or cystoprostatectomy including pelvic lymph node dissection offers a curative treatment pathway.
  • Adjuvant or inductive medical treatment is of unproven worth, but a combination of hormonal deprivation and radiotherapy seems to be more effective than any chemotherapy.

  • BACKGROUND: Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix is a rare neoplasm that share histological features of both adenocarcinoma and carcinoid tumor.
  • While its malignant potential remains unclear, GCC's are more aggressive than conventional carcinoid.
  • The clinical presentations of this neoplasm are also varied.
  • The focus is on its diagnosis, histopathological aspects, clinical manifestations, and management.
  • METHODS: Published studies in the English language between 1966 to 2004 were identified through Medline keyword search utilizing terms "goblet cell carcinoid," "adenocarcinoid", "mucinous carcinoid" and "crypt cell carcinoma" of the appendix.
  • Accurate diagnosis of this neoplasm requires astute observations within an acutely inflamed appendix as this neoplasm has a prominent pattern of submucosal growth and usually lacks the formation of a well-defined tumor mass.
  • The most common surgical treatment of choice was appendectomy with right hemicolectomy in 34.70% followed by simple appendectomy in 24.57%.
  • Concomitant distant metastasis at diagnosis was present in 11.16% of patients with the ovaries being the most common site in 3.60% followed by disseminated abdominal carcinomatosis in 1.03%.
  • Local lymph node involvement was seen in 8.76% of patients at the time of diagnosis.
  • GCC's of the appendix remains a neoplasm of unpredictable biological behavior and thus warrants lifelong surveillance for recurrence of the disease upon diagnosis and successful surgical extirpation.
  • CONCLUSION: GCC of the appendix is a rare neoplasm.
  • Due to its wide range of presentation, this tumor should be considered as a possible diagnosis in many varied situations leading to abdominal surgery.
  • In cases with obvious spread of the disease chemotherapy, mostly with 5-FU and leucovorin is advised.
  • Cytoreductive surgery with adjuvant intraperitoneal chemotherapy can offer improved survival in cases with advanced peritoneal dissemination.

  • PURPOSE: This study was designed to review the clinical and pathologic findings, treatment, and outcomes of patients who have a cancer that complicates perianal Crohn's disease.
  • METHODS: Charts of patients who had documented perianal Crohn's disease and a pathologic diagnosis of anal carcinoma were reviewed.
  • RESULTS: There were 14 patients (6 men; mean age, 49 years) who had evidence of perianal Crohn's disease (mean, 6.9 (range, 1-20) years) before their cancer diagnosis.
  • The diagnosis often was delayed despite increasing pain, multiple biopsies, and imaging studies.
  • There were 11 adenocarcinomas (8 mucinous or colloid subtypes) and 3 squamous-cell carcinomas.
  • Treatment included abdominoperineal resections plus chemotherapy in 12, and radiation and a defunctioning stoma in 1 patient.
  • In this series, patients who were diagnosed preoperatively and treated with multimodality therapy had better outcomes.

  • [Title] [Tumor downstaging through preoperative chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer].
  • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of preoperative chemoradiotherapy on patients with locally advanced rectal cancer by clinical and pathological characteristics.
  • METHODS: From July 1994 to May 1995, 36 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer were treated.
  • Pathology: adenocarcinoma 27, mucinous adenocarcinoma 7 and ductal adenocarcinoma 6.
  • The protocol was carried out in sequence of chemo-->radio-->surgery-->chemotherapy.
  • The treatment began with preoperative chemotherapy with folinic acid 50 mg followed by 5-FU bolus of 300 mg/m2 given for two cycles on d1-5 and d22-26 before irradiation.
  • Radiation therapy was delivered to a dose of 45 Gy, 1.8 Gy per fraction, 5 days a week.
  • Surgery was done 4-6 weeks after this preoperative treatments.
  • Another 2 to 4 cycles of chemotherapy were added 2 to 4 weeks after operation.
  • Twenty-one patients were treated by Dixon's operation, 14 patients by Mile's operation and 1 by local tumorectomy through the rectum.
  • Sixty percent of positive lymph nodes as assessed by transrectal ultrasonography before therapy became pathologically negative postoperatively, with the frequency of lymph node metastasis decreased by 46.0%(83.0% to 37.0%).

  • [Title] Dukes B colorectal cancer: distinct genetic categories and clinical outcome based on proximal or distal tumor location.
  • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether tumor location proximal or distal to the splenic flexure is associated with distinct molecular patterns and can predict clinical outcome in a homogeneous group of patients with Dukes B (T3-T4, N0, M0) colorectal cancer.
  • It has been hypothesized that proximal and distal colorectal cancer may arise through different pathogenetic mechanisms.
  • Although p53 and Ki-ras gene mutations occur frequently in distal tumors, another form of genomic instability associated with defective DNA mismatch repair has been predominantly identified in the proximal colon.
  • METHODS: A total of 126 patients with a lymph node-negative sporadic colon or rectum adenocarcinoma were prospectively assessed with the endpoint of death by cancer.
  • No patient received either radiotherapy or chemotherapy. p53 protein was studied by immunohistochemistry using DO-7 monoclonal antibody, and p53 and Ki-ras gene mutations were detected by single strand conformation polymorphism assay.
  • Nuclear p53 staining was found in 57 tumors (47 percent), and was more frequent in distal than in proximal tumors (55 vs. 21 percent; chi-squared test, P < 0.001).
  • Distal colon tumors and rectal tumors exhibited similar molecular patterns and showed no difference in clinical outcome.
  • In comparison with distal colorectal cancer, proximal tumors were found to be statistically significantly different on the following factors: mucinous content (P = 0.008), degree of histologic differentiation (P = 0.012), p53 protein expression, and gene mutation (P = 0.001 and 0.01 respectively).
  • Finally, patients with proximal tumors had a marginally better survival than those with distal colon or rectal cancers (log-rank test, P = 0.045).
  • Eighty-six percent of p53-positive tumors were located in the distal colon and rectum.
  • Distal colon and rectum tumors had similar molecular and clinical characteristics.
  • Location of the neoplasm in reference to the splenic flexure should be considered before group stratification in future trials of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with Dukes B tumors.

  • The tumors were categorized according to their distribution as appendix (n=4), cecum ( n=7), right colon (n=1), hepatic flexure (n=2), transverse colon (n=19), splenic flexure (n=3), left colon (n=6), sigmoid ( n=16), rectum (n=117), rectosigmoid and rectal lesions (n=16), and colorectal lesions without known locations (n=9).
  • Non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (AC) was the most common histological type (n=181, 90%), followed by mucinous AC (n=15), squamous cell carcinoma (n=1), carcinoid (n=1), melanoma (n=1) and signet ring carcinoma (n=1).
  • The most common presenting symptom was rectal bleeding (n=68, 34.5%).
  • Younger patients had a greater preponderance of mucinous AC (p=0.008) and generally underwent more extensive chemotherapy as seen with more usage of 5-Fluorouracil (p=0.05).
  • We found no significant difference between age, gender and type of cancer with subsite distribution.
  • Distal CRC was more prevalent.

  • BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the colon and rectum is rare in the pediatric age group, and usually presents with an advanced stage disease bearing a poor prognosis.
  • The medical records were studied to analyze the age, sex, clinical presentation, diagnostic procedures, extent of disease (Dukes staging), treatment, histological types, and outcome.
  • Abdominal pain, acute intestinal obstruction, rectal bleeding and weight loss were the commonest symptoms.
  • Surgical procedures were done in 11 patients (incomplete resection with segmental resection in 4 patients, complete resection in the other 4, and biopsy alone in 3 patients).The predominant histological type was mucinous carcinoma.
  • Seven patients received adjuvant chemotherapy, all of whom did not survive.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Colorectal carcinoma in children is very uncommon and could be easily misdiagnosed, resulting in advanced stage disease at diagnosis.
  • Because radical surgery which is the mainstay of treatment is possible only in patients with early stage disease, a high level of awareness and early diagnosis are critical.

  • Patients with these tumors have an improved prognosis and may show greater sensitivity to chemotherapy.
  • The proportions then rapidly decreased, reaching the lowest rate (4.7%) in the rectum.
  • Both types of MMR-d tumors more often had expansive borders, intraepithelial lymphocytosis, peritumoral lymphoid, and Crohn's-like lymphoid responses than the intact tumors; the frequencies of these features diminished with advancing stage.
  • Keloid and myxoid type stromas correlated with stage and vascular invasion and were not related to mismatch repair status.
  • hMSH2 tumors were most common in the rectum (55.6%).
  • Mucinous tumors were common in hMLH1 tumors (36.3%) but not in hMSH2 tumors (11.1%).
