  • The most common location of occurrence is the parotid followed by the minor salivary glands in which the palate, upper lip and buccal mucosa are most commonly affected.
  • The authors described two cases of tumor mixtus localised on soft palate and in external ear canal.
  • The first is a 57-year old male presented a painless swelling over the palate of four months duration.
  • On examination there was a firm, circumscribed tumor of the palate in the right side.
  • CT scans show a right soft palate well-defined mass.
  • Another case is 18-year old girl with progressive worsening of hearing .On examination external ear canal was blocked due to firm and round tumor on his upper wall.
  • The tumor was excised In local anesthesia.

  • Sialolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm characterized by a well-circumscribed mass composed of neoplastic mature adipose tissue and non-neoplastic salivary gland elements.
  • A 72-year-old woman presented with a painless swelling located in the hard palate, which had been identified 15 days earlier.
  • Microscopically, the tumor was well-circumscribed consisting of lobular proliferation of the lipomatous tissue with thin fibrous tissue septa containing clustered salivary gland elements.
  • The age distribution was from 27 to 84 years (mean, 61.6 years) and the tumor size ranged from 0.9 to 4 cm (mean, 1.7 cm).

  • [Title] Surgical management of minor salivary gland neoplasms of the palate.
  • We describe our experience with both benign and malignant tumors of the palatal minor salivary glands, focusing on the extent of resection and options for defect reconstruction.
  • Twenty-four percent of the lesions were benign.
  • The most common malignant tumor encountered was low grade polymorphous adenocarcinoma, followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • The extent of surgical resection was dictated by tumor pathology and evidence of perineural spread, and defects were reconstructed with a variety of techniques.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Neoplasms of the minor salivary glands in the palate may be excised, with limits dictated by tumor histopathology and perineural invasion.

  • Minor salivary gland carcinomas are uncommon but most often occur in the oral cavity, particularly the hard palate.
  • The frequency of benign tumors was 38.6% (n = 29) and malignant tumors 61.3% (n = 46).
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common histological type of benign tumor identified whereas mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the most common malignant tumors.
  • The most common primary location of the tumors was the palate followed by the cheek.
  • A benign tumor usually presented as an asymptomatic swelling and ulceration, pain being more frequently associated with the malignant tumors.
  • Any lesion arising from the hard palate (the most common site in this series) should be considered as a possible minor salivary gland tumor.

  • BACKGROUND: Myoepithelioma is a rare benign salivary gland tumour, localized most frequently in the parotid and in minor intraoral salivary glands.
  • CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old boy, complained of a painless nodule of the palate.
  • Tumour cells were positive for cytokeratins, vimentin and S-100 protein.
  • Surgical resection was performed and no evidences of tumour recurrence were observed after 6 years of the treatment.
  • CONCLUSION: Myoepithelioma is a very rare tumour in children and apparently presents a good prognosis, similar to occur in adult patients.

  • The extensive extensions and various clinical presentations of the tumor have been well documented in the literature.

  • There are two forms of AN: benign and malignant.
  • Benign AN may be hereditary, or may be related to systemic diseases or drugs.
  • This case report is based on a case of a 78-year-old woman suffering from invasive bladder papillary transitional cell carcinoma accompanied by extensive papillomatous areas of normal mucosal color and soft consistency involving the lips, buccal mucosa and hard palate.
  • Oral lesions occurred after the tumor had been diagnosed, i.e. after third operation for tumor recurrence.
  • The fifth operation for tumor recurrence resulted in slight improvement of oral changes.
  • It is concluded that the severity of oral changes is in correlation with tumor progression.
  • The occurrence of oral lesions may be an indicator of tumor progression.

  • RESULTS: Out of the 713 epithelial salivary tumors, 356 (49.9%) were classified as benign and 357 (50.1%) as malignant, indicating a benign-to-malignant ratio of 1:1.
  • The majority of both benign (29%) and malignant (39%) tumors occurred in the minor salivary glands.
  • Malignant tumors were slightly more common in minor salivary glands, indicating a benign-to-malignant ratio of 1:0.75.
  • Among the minor salivary sites, palate was the most frequent location, accounting for 51% of the tumors (246 out of 486).
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent tumor, representing 38% of all tumors (274 out of 713), followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma 21.6% (154 out of 713) and adenoid cystic carcinoma 13.5% (96 out of 713).
  • The commonest benign and malignant tumors were pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma in both major and minor salivary glands.
  • CONCLUSION: According to the findings of this study, equal frequencies of benign and malignant tumors indicate higher occurrences of malignancies, especially in the minor salivary glands, in the Sri Lankan population.

  • The cytologic and histologic findings of one brown tumor (BT) of hyperparathyroidism located in the hard palate, at first misdiagnosed as peripheral giant-cell granuloma, are described.
  • MGC-rich aspirates pose the same diagnostic dilemmas as those of histologic sections of MGC-containing lesions of bone: these cells are not diagnostic by themselves and can be seen in several benign and malignant conditions.

  • RESULTS: The most frequent diagnoses were as follows: chronic rhinosinusitis (52.6%), fungus ball (29.3%), antrochoanal polyp (2.6%), benign tumor (10.4%), and malignancy (5.1%).
  • Neoplastic disease was more likely to present as epistaxis; a polyp or mass revealed by nasal endoscopy; mass effect in the cheek, palate, or gingiva; and bony erosion on CT.
  • CONCLUSION: Although unilateral maxillary sinus opacity is usually inflammatory in origin, fungal sinusitis and neoplastic disorder are also likely.

  • A case of a maxillary osteolytic tumour is described in a 9-year-old boy.
  • Histological analysis led to an initial diagnosis of benign squamous odontogenic tumour, although this was not straightforward due to swelling, and cellular pseudo-malignant and non-specific signs.
  • Then, a very aggressive tumoural recurrence with lip and palate infiltration led to doubts as to the histologic nature of the tumour.
  • Efficient collaboration between several specialized pathologist teams finally confirmed that this was a squamous odontogenic tumour but in a very aggressive form.

  • Surgical resection is an integral component of the management of many pediatric neoplasms, especially those that are benign or, though not frankly malignant, are locally invasive.
  • The general principles of skull base reconstruction following tumor ablation are applicable to nearly all patients; the reconstructive algorithm, however, is particularly complex in the pediatric population and the potential benefits of therapy must be balanced against the cumulative impact on craniofacial growth and maturity and the donor site morbidity.
  • A retrospective analysis of all patients less than 19 years of age who underwent resection of a skull base tumor was performed.
  • Data were recorded on patient age, tumor pathology and location, prior therapies, surgical approach, extent of resection, margin status, defect components, details of reconstructive methods employed, complications, additional procedures or interventions, and the use and timing of adjuvant therapies.
  • On the basis of our experience and previous reports in the literature, we offer the following guidelines for the successful multidisciplinary care of children and adolescents undergoing skull base reconstruction after tumor resection:.

  • Occurring most often in children and young adults, CFTs are clinically benign lesions that can form over a broad anatomic distribution, including in subcutaneous and deep soft tissues, as well as in serosal and visceral locations.
  • In this article, we describe a case of CFT in a 29-year-old woman with a 7-cm mass on the right upper gingiva and hard palate, discuss the differential diagnosis with other oral spindle cell lesions, such as, desmoid fibromatosis, nodular fasciitis, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors, solitary fibrous tumor and also review the recent literature on this rare benign entity.

  • Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor of the salivary glands that has elements of both epithelial and mesenchymal tissues.
  • The tumor most commonly arises in the parotid or submandibular glands.
  • Infrequently, it may arise from the minor salivary glands and present as an intraoral mass over the palate or lip.
  • We report a patient with PA over the hard palate, which resembled common intraoral diseases like oral papilloma, squamous cell carcinoma and condyloma acuminate.

  • [Title] Solitary neurofibroma of the palate. A case report.
  • The neurofibroma is a benign tumor of neuronal origin not frequently located in the oral cavity.
  • The possible association of this neoplasia with systemic pathologies, such as Von Recklinghausen's disease and multiple endocrine neoplasia, makes its diagnosis fundamental.
  • The diagnosis is, in most cases, quite complex, because of the neurofibroma's strong similarities with a great number of benign neoformations of the connective tissue, of the epithelium, and of the bone.
  • This articles presents the case of a solitary neurofibroma, subtype I (common Schwann cell type), detected on the left-hand side of the posterior region of the palate in a 56-year-old woman, which presented itself as an otherwise non-symptomatic ulcerated mass.
  • The immunohistochemical test, which resulted positive for S-100 and negative for the epithelial membrane antigen and keratin, allowed the diagnosis of a presumably benign lesion deriving from a neural differentiation.

  • A cleft palate or a nasopharyngeal teratoma has been described as accompanying choristoma, but there are no observations of both anomalies being simultaneously present and combined.
  • RESULTS: Surgical exploration revealed a yellowish tumor mass with whitish soft tissue material within the tumor, adherence to the surrounding blood vessels, and therefore subtotal removal was performed.
  • The patient also had a cleft palate with a pinkish palatal mass and underwent repair of the cleft palate, and excision of mass that was a mature cystic teratoma on pathologic examination.
  • Follow-up at 18 months later showed that there was no evidence of tumor regrowth or neurological deficit, and the neurological development was normal.
  • CONCLUSION: The authors described a rare case of intracranial extracerebral neuroglial choristoma accompanied by both nasopharyngeal teratoma and cleft palate and suggested its benign nature from the low MIB-1 labeling index.

  • The data collected comprised patient age and sex, the clinical characteristics and location of the tumor, the duration of the lesion, its size, the treatment provided, and the histopathological findings.
  • The great majority (94.4%) were benign tumors.
  • The preferential location was the posterior third of the hard palate (33.2%), followed by the soft palate (16.7%) and the mucosa of the upper lip (16.7%).
  • The histopathological diagnoses of our MSGTs comprised 10 pleomorphic adenomas (55.3%), 2 cystadenomas (11.1%), 1 myoepithelioma (5.6%), 1 sialadenoma papilliferum (5.6%), 1 basal cell adenoma (5.6%), 1 Warthin's tumor (5.6%), 1 canalicular adenoma (5.6%), and 1 low-grade polymorphic adenocarcinoma (5.6%).
  • Six percent of all benign minor salivary gland tumors are considered to relapse, versus 65% of all malignant lesions.

  • METHODS: We describe here two new cases of multilineage tumors including sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma [SNTCS], and congenital oronasopharyngeal teratoma (epignathus) and compare their features with those of a new case of a rare salivary gland anlage tumor [SGAT], an entity for which the pathogenesis is unclear (i.e. hamartoma versus neoplasm).
  • Both cytogenetic abnormalities are characteristically present in malignant germ cell tumors providing for the first time evidence that this rare tumor type indeed might represent a variant of a germ cell neoplasm.
  • The SGAT and epignathus carried no such cytogenetic abnormalities, in keeping with their limited and benign biologic potential.
  • Malignant tumors of germ cell origins are more likely to affect adults with insidious symptom development, while benign tumors can nevertheless cause dramatic clinical symptoms which, under certain circumstances, can be fatal.

  • Clinically, it manifests as a slow growing tumor, fluctuant on palpation due to its cystic morphology.

  • We present a 73-year-old female patient with an asymptomatic tumor of 8 years evolution in the right posterior area of the hard palate.

  • Here, we present a case of osteolipoma of the nasopharynx in a 21-year-old male who was referred for a nasopharyngeal mass causing a defect in the left half of the soft palate.
  • The well-demarcated, firm tumor was excised through transnasal endoscopic and transpalatal approaches, and the defect of the soft palate was repaired by a superiorly based pharyngeal flap.
  • Osteolipomas should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of nasopharyngeal mass as an extremely rare benign lesion.

  • [Title] Clinical analysis of salivary gland tumor cases in West China in past 50 years.
  • In our study, 3461 cases of salivary gland tumor treated between 1955 and 2002 at West China Stomatology Hospital of Sichuan University were retrospectively analyzed, and compared with the previous reports.
  • Measures such as age, tumor location, tumor histological type, and the nature of the growth (benign or malignant) were recorded at the same time.
  • The findings are as follows: the average ages of salivary gland tumor patients were 41.38 years for the benign cases and 45.20 for the malignant ones; the male:female ratio was 0.
  • 99:1 in the benign cases and 1.34:1 in the malignant ones; primary tumors were mostly in the parotid gland, palate and submandibular gland in sequence.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent benign tumor followed by Warthin's tumor and basal cell adenoma, whereas mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified were the most frequent malignant tumors.
  • The male:female ratio of malignant tumors was higher than that of benign ones.
  • The parotid gland and palate were the most common locations of salivary gland tumors.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma were the most frequent benign and malignant tumors, respectively.

  • [Title] Benign oral masses in a Northern Jordanian population-a retrospective study.
  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative frequencies, types and distribution of benign oral masses in North Jordanians.
  • The records of the Department of Pathology at Jordan University of Science & Technology were reviewed and analyzed for patients with benign oral soft tissue masses, received during an 11-year period (1991-2001).
  • A sum of 818 benign oral soft tissue masses (4% neoplastic and 96% non-neoplastic) was analyzed.
  • Common benign neoplasms were salivary pleomorphic adenoma and lipoma.
  • The sites commonly affected by benign neoplasms were the palate, tongue, upper lip and buccal mucosa, in a descending order and the sites commonly affected by non-neoplastic lesions were the gingiva, buccal mucosa, lower lip and tongue in a descending order.
  • It is concluded that some of the features of benign oral masses in north Jordanians published in this paper are similar to those from other countries, and some are different.
  • Further nationwide population-based surveys are needed to further define the epidemiology of benign oral masses among Jordanians.

  • [Title] Investigation of a broad-spectrum PCR assay for human papillomaviruses in screening benign lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract.
  • BACKGROUND: A variety of different human papillomavirus (HPV) types can be found in benign and malignant lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract.
  • RESULTS: A total of 27 biopsies from laryngeal papillomas (9), exophytic (3) and inverted (6) papillomas of the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses, papillomas of the uvula or soft palate (5), leukoplakias of the larynx (2), seborrheic keratosis (1) and granulation tumor of the tongue (1) were analyzed by the broad-spectrum PCR system.
  • CONCLUSIONS: It was shown that the applied broad-spectrum PCR system is a reliable tool in the detection of HPV DNA in benign lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract.

  • Cystadenoma is a relatively rare benign epithelial tumor of the salivary glands, and described herein is an additional case.
  • A 51-year-old Japanese man had noticed a mass of the left hard palate 25 years previously.
  • Histologically, the tumor was composed of bilayered columnar epithelium with cystic change and partial solid growth of glandular structures with clear cells.
  • The tumor cells had mild cellular atypia, but the tumor lacked papillary growth and a fibrous capsule.

  • INTRODUCTION: This article presents a patient with sialolipoma of the submandibular gland, a rare neoplasm, and reviews related literatures.
  • The most common site for the tumor was the parotid gland (17 cases, 60.7%), followed by the palate (four cases, 14.2%).
  • Histopathologically, a tumor was a benign lesion with proliferating lipocytes including scattered foci with a normal salivary gland tissue.
  • CONCLUSION: Sialolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm in the head and neck and it shows equal sex predilection.
