  • [Title] Myasthenia gravis associated with ectopic cervical thymoma.
  • It is well known that thymoma is often associated with myasthenia gravis.
  • Although ectopic thymoma can be found anywhere from the pharynx to the anterior mediastinum, it is usually benign and has not been reported in association with myasthenic symptoms.
  • Moreover, ectopic thymoma located in the neck region is apt to be misdiagnosed as a thyroid mass or other infiltrative lesion.
  • We report the case of a patient with myasthenia gravis associated with ectopic cervival thymoma, whose myasthenic symptoms were well controlled after removal of the ectopic thymomas.

  • [Title] Myotonic dystrophy type 1 coexisting with myasthenia gravis and thymoma.
  • Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is an autosomal-dominant multisystemic disorder that may rarely be associated with benign and malignant neoplasms.
  • Cases of both thymoma and myasthenia gravis in association with DM1 are extremely rare.
  • We present a 51-year-old man with a family history of DM1 and fluctuating diplopia and ptosis, who was found to have acetylcholine receptor-binding antibodies, thymoma, and a clinical presentation compatible with ocular myasthenia gravis as well as positive genetic testing for DM1.
  • Therefore, abnormal CTG repeat expansions in the gene could lead to the development of thymoma and myasthenia gravis.

  • The most common benign cystic lesions of the diaphragm are bronchogenic or mesothelial cysts, while the most common benign solid lesion is a lipoma.
  • Benign tumors of the diaphragm are resected if they are symptomatic or if there is a doubt about the diagnosis.
  • Endometriosis, a benign process that metastasizes to the diaphragm, is typically treated medically; surgical ablation or resection is considered only after failed conservative treatment.
  • Surgical resection of metastatic malignant tumors, such as ovarian cancer and thymoma, as well as malignancies affecting the diaphragm by direct extension, such as mesothelioma, lung, and esophageal cancer, may provide some survival advantage.

  • Despite a benign histologic appearance, thymomas have metastatic potential.
  • Here we report a case of a patient with a Masaoka stage IVb thymoma who was successfully treated using a multimodal strategy including systemic chemotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, and thoracic surgery.
  • Hepatic metastasis of thymoma is a relatively rare occurrence and, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the application of radiofrequency ablation to thymoma.

  • [Title] [A meta-analysis of thymoma-associated systemic lupus erythematosus from 1975 - 2008 worldwide].
  • OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features and treatment strategy for the thymoma-associated systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a worldwide perspective.
  • METHODS: All articles between 1975 to 2008 were searched with the key words "SLE Thymoma" or "SLE thymectomy" in the database of Pubmed & Medline; the Chinese articles were searched with the same key words in the database of China Hospital Knowledge Database (CHKD).
  • The mean age of SLE onset was 47.9 (21-76) while the mean age of discovery of thymoma was 48.5 (18-77).
  • However, the thymoma-associated SLE occurs in patients older than the classical onset age of SLE (P < 0.01).
  • The thymoma could be benign or invasive which does not depend on gender or age.
  • As for the patients who already had SLE when discovering the thymoma, the clinical outcomes varied after the thymectomy (remission 27.8%, exacerbation 33.3%, no change 38.9%, P > 0.05).
  • CONCLUSION: The possibility of thymoma should be considered among those late-onset SLE patients.
  • The glucocorticoid-based immunosuppressive therapy is effective for thymoma-associated SLE.

  • The overall expression of LRF mRNA transcripts and total protein was significantly more in malignant breast tissues than the benign breast tissues.
  • LRF expression was also observed in the nuclei of human colon, renal, lung, hepatocellular carcinomas and thymoma tumor cells.
  • In general, a significantly higher expression of LRF was seen in malignant tissues than in the corresponding benign or normal tissue.

  • Differentiation of benign and malignant causes of lymphocytosis in blood or bone marrow can be problematic.
  • Diagnoses for these cats included chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL; n = 2), pure red cell aplasia (PRCA; n = 4), immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA; n = 3), thymoma (n = 1), cholangiohepatitis (n = 1), and fever of unknown origin (n = 1).
  • Alternatively, in CLL and thymoma, the proliferating lymphocytes were diffusely distributed and were predominately T cells.

  • [Source] The source of this record is MEDLINE®, a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • In thymoma (n = 73), activated STAT3 was noted at a significantly higher frequency in the cases of lymphocyte-rich thymoma (ie types AB, B1, and B2, 46%, 23/50) in comparison with lymphocyte-depleted thymoma (types A and B3, 1/23) (p = 0.009).
  • Thymoma with activated STAT3 tended to present at an earlier stage, show complete resectability and less aggressive behaviour, and have a higher correlation with MG than the STAT3-negative/inactive group (p < 0.05).
  • These data provide the first evidence that constitutive STAT3 activation is seen in both benign and neoplastic thymic tissue and is associated with the persistence of thymic tissue and the presence of MG.
  • It is likely to be induced by different factors in thymoma and thymic carcinoma.
