  • Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma are rare primary bone tumors that usually do not arise in the spine.
  • Histologically, osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma are similar, containing osteoblasts that produce osteoid and woven bone.
  • Osteoblastoma, however, is larger, tends to be more aggressive, and can undergo malignant transformation, whereas osteoid osteoma is small, benign, and self-limited.
  • With the help of modern imaging modalities that aid in diagnosis and surgical planning, a complete removal and cure may be achieved for most of these rare tumors.

  • Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma are benign bone tumors that occur most often in adolescents and predominantly in males.
  • Typical clinical symptoms, such as reduced range of motion of adjacent joints, nocturnal bone pain and relief of pain using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy especially in osteoid osteoma may lead to the correct diagnosis.
  • In radiographic examinations, the initial changes are often uncharacteristic causing further delay in diagnosis.

  • OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features and surgical treatment of osteoid osteoma and improve the diagnostic therapeutic level.
  • METHODS: Clinical data of 35 patients (25 males and 10 females) with osteoid osteoma diagnosed and treated between January 1997 to October 2009 were retrospectively reviewed.
  • The average interval time between onset of symptoms and diagnosis was 12 months (ranged, 1 to 24 months).
  • The most common presenting complaints for patients with osteoid osteoma was pain which usually responded to NSAIDs and was generally more severe at night.
  • CONCLUSION: According to the typical clinical presentation, radiographic findings, the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma is not difficult.
  • Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the operation should be carried out as early as possible to relieve the symptoms, improve the quality of life and prevent long-term complications.

  • [Title] [Repair of bone defect due to tumor resection with self-setting CPC in children].
  • OBJECTIVE: To summarize the effect of self-setting CPC on the repair of bone defect after tumor resection in children.
  • METHODS: From December 1998 to December 2006, 32 patients with benign bone tumor were treated, and the bone defect was repaired by CPC.
  • The course of disease was 3-18 months.
  • There were 12 cases of non-ossifying fibroma, 8 of bone cyst, 7 of osteoid osteoma and 5 of fibrous dysplasia.
  • The bone defect was located in femur in 15 cases, in tibia in 8 cases, in humerus in 6 cases and in other positions in 3 cases.
  • The range of bone defect was 2.0 cm x 1.5 cm x 1.0 cm - 10.0 cm x 5.0 cm x 4.0 cm.
  • CPC spongiosa granules of 3-23 g were filled in 26 cases, including 3 children with pathologic fracture and internal fixation with plate, and injectable CPC of 5-20 mL was filled in 6 bone cyst cases.
  • The X-ray films showed that the implanted CPC began to fuse with the host bone 4-9 months (7 month on average) after operation.
  • Finally, bone matrix grew well and no recurrence was found.
  • CONCLUSION: CPC in repairing bone defect after benign bone tumor in children is a safe, economical, convenient and non-toxic method.

  • OBJECTIVES: In this prospective study, we evaluated the efficiency of image-guided minimal invasive surgical resection of osteoid osteomas of the long bones.
  • METHODS: Fourteen patients (11 males, 3 females; mean age 13 years; range 4 to 22 years) with osteoid osteoma of the long bones underwent image-guided minimal invasive intralesional extended curettage.
  • Preoperatively, all the patients were evaluated by plain radiographs, computed tomography (CT), bone scintigraphy, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Bone grafting or internal fixation were not required during operations.
  • CONCLUSION: Image-guided minimal invasive surgery is effective in the local control of osteoid osteomas affecting the long bones and causes less morbidity.

  • STUDY DESIGN: A report of five cases of thoracolumbar osteoid osteoma treated with combined computer-assisted and gamma probe-guided high-speed drill excision.
  • OBJECTIVES: To document the surgical technique consisting of a combination of both computer-assisted and gamma probe-guided high-speed drill excision for osteoid osteoma of the spine.
  • SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Curative treatment of spinal osteoid osteoma is performed by surgical intralesional excision of the nidus, but intraoperative localization of the nidus is often difficult.
  • However, there is no clinical report regarding the application and usefulness of computer-assisted intralesional excision of the osteoid nidus.
  • Excision of the nidus with a computer-assisted high-speed drill and intraoperative gamma probe control may result in complete intralesional excision without sacrificing more bone than necessary.
  • With a computed tomography-based electro-optical navigation system, real-time virtual images of the osteoid osteoma were generated by matching the intraoperative surface with preoperative computed tomography images.
  • The osteoid osteoma was excised with the use of an image-guided high-speed drill, and complete excision was controlled with a gamma detection probe.
  • CONCLUSIONS: The combination of both computer-assisted surgery and gamma probe-guided high-speed drill excision for osteoid osteoma of the spine helps to localize and excise the nidus of the osteoid osteoma with minimal bone resection of the posterior spinal structures.

  • [Title] [Repairing bone defects of benign bone neoplasm by grafting of bioactive glass combined with autologous bone marrow].
  • OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical application of grafting with bioactive glass (BG) and autologous bone marrow for defect after resection and curettage of benign bone neoplasm.
  • METHODS: From January 2004 to May 2007, 34 patients with bone defects were repaired.
  • There were 14 cases of simple bone cysts, 6 cases of fibrous dysplasia, 3 cases of osteoid osteoma, 4 cases of non-ossifying fibroma, 2 cases of enchondroma and 3 cases of giant cell tumor of bone.
  • Benign bone neoplasm was removed thoroughly with a curet or osteotome, bone defects ranged from 3.0 cm x 2.0 cm x 1.5 cm to 11.0 cm x 3.5 cm x 3.0 cm, which was closed-up with the mixtures of BG and autogenous red bone marrow.
  • The postoperative systemic and local reactions were observed, and the regular X-ray examinations were performed to observe the bone healing.
  • At averaged 16 weeks after operation, patients with bone tumor in lower limbs resumed walking independently and those with bone tumor in upper limbs resumed holding object.
  • Radiographically, the interface between the implanted bone and host bone became fuzzy 1 month after implantation.
  • Two months after operation, the BG was absorbed gradually, new bone formation could be seen in the defects.
  • Four months after operation, implanted bone and host bone merged together, bone density increased.
  • Six to ten months after operation, the majority of the implanted BG was absorbed and substituted for new bone, bone remodeling was established.
  • CONCLUSION: BG may boast both bone conductive and bone inductive activities.
  • The combined grafting with BG and autologous bone marrow appears to be minimally invasive treatment to repair bone defects of benign bone neoplasm, with rare complications and no significant reverse reaction, and could repair bone defects completely.

  • [Title] Osteoid osteoma: percutaneous laser ablation and follow-up in 114 patients.
  • PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the effectiveness of interstitial laser ablation (ILA) as a curative treatment of osteoid osteoma.
  • From June 1994 to June 2004, 114 patients (mean age, 22.3 years) suspected of having osteoid osteoma underwent ILA with a diode laser (805 nm).
  • An optical fiber was introduced into the nidus of the osteoid osteoma, and 400-3000 J of energy was delivered, depending on the size and location of the nidus.
  • Twelve spinal osteoid osteomas were treated; in five of these cases, the nidus was located fewer than 8 mm from the adjacent nerve roots, and slow epidural or periradicular infusion of normal saline was used to avoid thermal damage to neurologic structures.
  • CONCLUSION: Percutaneous ILA is an effective treatment for osteoid osteoma.

  • CASE REPORT: We report herein the case of a 22-year-old woman presenting an intraarticular osteoid osteoma of the elbow.
  • Diagnosis has been established on imaging findings (MRI and CT-scan) after 10 months because of atypical clinical presentation as a chronic monoarthritis of the elbow.
  • The picture of an osteoid osteoma of the lower extremity of the humerus associated to a synovitis and a joint effusion was suspected on MRI.
  • CONCLUSION: Regarding an unexplained chronic monoarthritis, the diagnosis of intraarticular osteoid osteoma should be evoked.

  • The scaphoid bone of the wrist is one of the most commonly fractured bones in the body.
  • In patients with normal initial plain radiographs, MR imaging can discriminate occult fractures from bone bruises and may also demonstrate ligamentous disruption.
  • Idiopathic osteonecrosis or Preiser's disease was originally described after trauma.
  • The non-traumatic disorders of the scaphoid include post-traumatic osteoarthritis, inflammatory bone marrow edema in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and osteomyelitis.
  • MR imaging is helpful in all the above disorders to demonstrate early bone marrow edema, cartilage degeneration and associated subchondral marrow changes.
  • The most commonly found tumors in the scaphoid are usually benign and include enchondroma, osteoblastoma and osteoid osteoma.
  • MR imaging is not mandatory for the initial diagnosis, which should be based on plain X-ray findings.

  • Painful scoliosis is a well-recognized presentation of spinal osteoid osteoma, especially in adolescents, and is thought to be caused by pain-provoked muscle spasm on the side of the lesion.

  • [Title] Radiofrequency ablation of osteoid osteoma in atypical locations: a case series.
  • BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteoma has a nidus surrounded by sclerotic bone with a size usually less than 20 mm.
  • Its diagnosis is made on typical presentation of nocturnal pain and imaging findings.
  • Excision of the niduses, which are often small and difficult to precisely identify, sometimes may result in resection of surrounding normal bone.
  • Minimally invasive percutaneous treatments have been used to try to minimize resection of normal bone.
  • QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We determined the pain relief and complication rates after radiofrequency ablation of osteoid osteomas presenting in atypical locations and followed patients to assess possible recurrence or late complications.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 21 patients with osteoid osteomas in unusual locations (eg, hip, radioulnar joint, and proximal phalanx) in whom we used radiofrequency ablation.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Radiofrequency ablation for osteoid osteomas in unusual locations reliably relieves pain with few complications and recurrences at short-term followup.

  • The patient was referred to undergo bone scan on clinical suspicion of osteoid osteoma and to rule out stress fracture if any.
  • Planar bone scan was performed, which showed a lesion in L3 vertebra and was further evaluated with SPECT (Single photon emission computed tomography) study to characterize the lesion.
  • On SPECT examination, the classical features of osteoid osteoma, the double density sign (11), was noted in the pars interarticularis region.

  • Osteoid osteoma is a benign tumour in young adults.
  • When the typical clinical and radiological features are present, diagnosis is not difficult.
  • Problems in the differential diagnosis may arise in connection with an unusual location.
  • We report on the clinical features, radiographic and histopathological findings, treatment, and results of four patients who were managed for an intra- or juxta-articular osteoid osteoma at our medical centre between 2000 and 2002 and in whom the initial diagnosis was erroneous and delayed from 1 to 10 years.
  • In order to remove these lesions, we performed a CT-guided en block retrograde resection under arthroscopic control for juxta-articular osteoid osteomas (knee) and an arthroscopy-assisted en block antegrade resection in two cases of intra-articular osteoid osteoma (elbow and shoulder).
  • None of the osteoid osteomas recurred in the follow-up period, and each patient got relief from pain.

  • CASE REPORT: We present a 2-year-old boy with lower limb discrepancy due to overgrowth of the femur as first manifestation of an osteoid osteoma.
  • The tumor localization was intramedular, and diagnosis was confirmed by pathology after broad resection of the tumor.

  • OBJECTIVE: This case study presents the delayed diagnosis, surgical management, and postsurgical follow-up of an intra-articular osteoid osteoma of the left femoral neck in an 18-year-old male patient with special emphasis on discussing the confusing clinical and imaging characteristics of the lesion often associated with delayed diagnosis and increased morbidity.
  • In magnetic resonance imaging studies, the diagnosis of intra-articular osteoid osteoma of the femoral neck was suggested; however, working diagnoses also included old posttraumatic injury, hip infection, juvenile chronic arthritis, and posttraumatic arthritis.
  • The correct diagnosis was made 31 months after presentation based on computed tomography depiction of the lesion.
  • CONCLUSION: Clinicians and radiologists should be aware of the potentially confusing clinical and imaging findings associated with intra-articular osteoid osteoma of the hip.

  • OBJECT: Osteoid osteomas and osteoblastoma of the spine are rare lesions in childhood, and management strategies have changed.
  • METHODS: Case records and radiographic images from all cases of osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma diagnosed between 1993 and 2008 were retrospectively reviewed, including those managed nonsurgically.
  • Osteoid osteoma was diagnosed in 7 (32%) of the 22 patients who underwent surgery, and osteoblastoma in 15 (68%).
  • Nine (41%) of the 22 surgically treated patients underwent fusion procedures (bone onlay or instrumentation) at the time of surgery.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Osteoid osteomas and osteoblastomas can present challenging management problems in pediatric patients.
  • In the majority of cases in which conservative therapy fails or pathological diagnosis is required, surgery using modern intraoperative imaging and spinal instrumentation can provide symptom relief and tumor control.

  • Biopsy is usually performed as the first step in percutaneous treatment of osteoid osteomas prior to laser photocoagulation.
  • At our institution, 117 patients with a presumed diagnosis of osteoid osteoma had a trephine biopsy before a percutaneous laser photocoagulation.
  • Overall biopsy results were positive for osteoid osteoma in 83 (70.9%) of the 117 cases.

  • The differential diagnosis of a tibial intracortical diaphyseal lesion includes osteoid osteoma, periosteal chondroma, nonossifying fibroma, osteofibrous dysplasia, and adamantinoma.
  • While osteoid osteomas represent 5% of all primary bone tumors, little is understood about intracortical chondromas.
  • This article presents the first reported case of a pathologic fracture of an intracortical lesion in a child that shared radiographic and clinical features similar to those of osteoid osteoma, but on histopathologic examination revealed an intracortical chondroma.
  • Our patient exhibited radiographic features of a poorly circumscribed cortical bone sclerosis, a centralized radiolucent nidus on computed tomography, and a hot bone scan of a lesion <1 cm in size that was consistent with an osteoid osteoma.
  • An excision of the bone lesion was performed.
  • The histopathology of the lesion revealed nodules of benign hyaline cartilage in cortical bone, consistent with an intracortical chondroma.
  • Demarcated by cortical bone with mature Haversian systems rather than periosteum or cancellous bone, intracortical chondroma differs from the other 2 chondroma variants, periosteal chondroma and enchondroma, by its relationship to the surrounding bone.
  • The similarities with osteoid osteoma and intracortical chondroma in our patient make it circumspect in regards to ablating lesions (ie, needle radiofrequency ablation) without acquiring a biopsy in pediatric patients that both clinically and radiographically are presumably an osteoid osteoma.

  • The interpretation of PET-CT fused images was based on increased 18F-fluoride uptake and the corresponding CT-located abnormality.
  • Ten patients had positive findings that included 4 cases of spondylolysis (3 of them active), 3 frank fractures (2 of the transverse process and 1 of the facet), 2 osteoid osteomas, 1 osteitis pubis, 1 sacroiliitis, and 2 herniated disks.
  • Treatment was tailored based on final diagnosis.
  • In 5 patients, in whom no abnormality was identified, the back pain resolved spontaneously.

  • BACKGROUND: In recent years, osteoid osteomas have been treated more frequently by means of percutaneous procedures.
  • The main disadvantage in patients with suspected osteoid osteoma is the lack of histological verification.
  • Our study presents the results that we obtained using a minimally invasive diamond bone-cutting system allowing histologic verification.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients (age 10-20 years) with osteoid osteoma in the lower extremities were subjected to resection of the nidus using a minimally invasive water-cooled diamond bone-cutting system.
  • RESULTS: In all patients the nidus was resected successfully, and the diagnosis was histologically confirmed.
  • CONCLUSION: In selected localizations with a clearly visible nidus, the minimally invasive diamond bone-cutting system presented here offers an alternative to the established surgical and percutaneous procedures for treating osteoid osteomas.
  • This procedure combines the advantages of a minimally invasive technique with the option of histological verification of the diagnosis and correct nidus ablation.

  • This imaging finding in relation to intraosseous tumours can aid in providing a more focused differential diagnosis.
  • In this review, we will discuss the MR imaging of bone marrow oedema surrounding intraosseous neoplasms.
  • Benign lesions commonly associated with bone marrow oedema include osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, chondroblastoma and Langerhan's cell histiocytosis.

  • Osteoblastoma is a benign neoplasm of bone characterized by a proliferation of osteoblasts forming bone trabeculae set in a vascularized fibrous connective tissue stroma.
  • We report 24 examples of this neoplasm arising in the maxilla and mandible and compare the clinical and radiographic characteristics of this neoplasm to 53 previously reported examples of osteoblastoma and osteoid osteoma in the jaws.
  • Our results reveal more females reported in the new examples of osteoblastoma than in the previously reported examples of osteoblastoma and osteoid osteoma.

  • We report herein a unique, previously unreported, successful outcome for a patient untreated for a tumor affecting a femoral neck considered as painless osteoid osteoma.
  • Diagnosis was based on the plain radiography, bone scan, and computed tomography.
  • We conclude that painless osteoid osteoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of asymptomatic femoral neck lesions.
  • Our case suggests that osteoid osteoma has a tendency to regress over time and that conservative management appears to be a reliable option.

  • Delay of diagnosis is not uncommon.
  • Tumour-like lesions accounted for 322 cases (simple bone cyst in 255, eosinophilic granuloma in 43, aneurismal bone cyst in 34), benign tumours for 340 cases (osteoid osteoma in 229, fibrous dysplasia in 63, exostosis in 48) and malignant tumours for 80 cases (Ewing's sarcoma in 53 and osteosarcoma in 27).

  • The commonly taught premise that pediatric back pain frequently has an underlying diagnosis has been recently challenged.
  • There have been few prospective studies, however, about the diagnosis rate and appropriate diagnostic methods for back pain in children.
  • This study prospectively examines the rate of diagnosis for pediatric back pain and the value of various diagnostic studies for this problem.
  • Inclusion criteria consisted of age younger than 18 years, no previous back surgery, no previous diagnosis given, and duration of pain longer than 3 months.
  • The algorithm incorporated commonly used diagnostic techniques including radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, bone scan, and laboratory studies.
  • The end point was considered to be either (1) a definitive diagnosis or (2) no diagnosis and no symptomatic or clinical changes during a 2-year period.
  • RESULTS: Fifty-seven patients (78.1%) ended with no diagnosis.
  • Three other patients had abnormal laboratory values but no definitive diagnosis.
  • Other diagnoses included Scheuermann disease (n = 2), osteoid osteoma (n = 1), and a herniated disk (n = 1).
  • Contrary to most of the previously published data, most of our patients ended the study with no definitive diagnosis.
  • These results suggest that pediatric back pain frequently does not carry a definitive diagnosis and that exhaustive diagnostic protocols may not be necessary for this problem.

  • OBJECTIVE: To review our experience with percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for osteoid osteoma.
  • PARTICIPANTS, DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective review of 24 patients with osteoid osteoma treated with percutaneous RFA at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, from August 2000 to February 2005.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Percutaneous RFA is a safe and efficacious treatment for osteoid osteoma with a low morbidity rate.

  • [Title] [Osteoid osteomas of the fingers: an atypical localization? Two case reports and a review of the literature].
  • Osteoid osteomas are painful bone tumors that usually occur in childhood or adolescence.
  • Despite the small size of the bony lesions osteoid osteomas can cause persistent pain.
  • As a result of both patients' histories, and following radiographic imaging and magnetic resonance imaging, a diagnosis of osteoid osteoma was made.
  • Remission could be achieved in both patients following treatment with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).In addition to the typical sites at the long bones of the lower extremity, osteoid osteomas can also localize to other sites such as fingers.
  • In the case of definitive diagnosis and under close follow-up, medical treatment with NSAIDs is an alternative to surgical strategies.

  • PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive method indicated in the treatment of bone tumors.
  • Its effectiveness and safety have been reported in a number of studies concerned with the therapy of osteoid osteoma of extremities.
  • However, only scarce information is available on effectiveness of ablation in osteoid osteoma of the spine.
  • MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study included four patients, three women and one man, with osteoid osteoma of the lumbar or sacral spine who were treated by percutaneous CT-guided radiofrequency ablation in the period from February 2002 to March 2005.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Percutaneous CT-guided radiofrequency ablation is an effective and safe method for treatment of spinal osteoid osteoma.

  • (18)F-Fluoride is a positron-emitting bone-seeking agent, the uptake of which reflects blood flow and remodeling of bone.
  • Assessment of (18)F-fluoride kinetics using quantitative positron emission tomography (PET) methods allows the regional characterization of lesions of metabolic bone diseases and the monitoring of their response to therapy.
  • It also enables the assessment of bone viability and discrimination of uneventful and impaired healing processes of fractures, bone grafts and osteonecrosis.
  • Taking advantage of the favorable pharmacokinetic properties of the tracer combined with the high performance of PET technology, static (18)F-fluoride PET is a highly sensitive imaging modality for detection of benign and malignant osseous abnormalities.
  • The instant fusion of increased (18)F-fluoride uptake with morphological data of computed tomography (CT) using hybrid PET/CT systems improves the specificity of (18)F-fluoride PET in cancer patients by accurately differentiating between benign and malignant sites of uptake.
  • The results of a few recent publications suggest that (18)F-fluoride PET/CT is a valuable modality in the diagnosis of pathological osseous conditions in patients also referred for nononcologic indications. (18)F-fluoride PET and PET/CT are, however, not widely used in clinical practice.
  • However, it has been stated by some experts that (18)F-fluoride PET/CT is expected to replace (99m)Tc-MDP bone scintigraphy in the future.

  • Posterior skull base osteoma is extremely rare and has been anecdotally reported.
  • OBSERVATION: We report a rare case of a large osteoid osteoma of the petro-occipital area in a 26-year-old man.
  • Cerebral MRI shows a giant lesion of the posterior cerebral fossa with destruction of the left petrous bone and the left side of the occipital bone.
  • CONCLUSION: Although benign and rare, osteoid osteoma can present with neurological deficit due to mass effect and involvement of nervous structures especially in the posterior skull base.

  • Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumour usually occurring in young individuals (10-30 years).
  • In the past, surgery was performed in an "open" fashion and the nidus had to be removed with a bone block.
  • We present a series of 18 consecutive patients with osteoid osteoma of the pelvis, femur, and tibia, treated percutaneously under CT guidance.
  • The diagnosis was histologically confirmed in 14 cases out of 18 (77%).
  • In four cases no histological confirmation of osteoid osteoma could be achieved.
  • Percutaneous CT-guided removal seems to be efficient and safe for the treatment of osteoid osteoma.
  • The use of a cannulated drill and a cannulated curette facilitates efficient removal of the tumour and procurement of tissue for diagnosis.

  • In this work the AA. report the technique and results of the arthroscopically assisted percutaneous arthrodesis of the ankle and of the arthroscopically assisted percutaneous curettage of epiphyseal chondroblastoma (E.C.) and osteoid osteoma (O.O.) of skeleton.
  • From 1992 to 2002 they treated 12 selected cases: 4 affected by E.C., 3 located at proximal tibia and 1 at proximal humerus, in patients aged from 13 to 16 years and evaluated at a follow-up ranging from 7 to 3 years, with a 75% of good results; 4 affected by osteoid osteoma of proximal femur (2) and tibia (2), in patients aged from 13 to 18 years, evaluated at a follow-up ranging from 12 to 3 years with very good results (75%); 4 cases of ankle'painful stiffness, with 1 case of severe weightbearing instability, in patients aged from 17 to 75 years, evaluated at final bone fusion, radiographically observed at a average of 3.2-month follow-up from operation.

  • BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of computed tomography (CT) guided percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) ablation of osteoid osteoma by using the water-cooled probe.
  • METHODS: During the period from July 2002 to February 2006, fifty-one patients with osteoid osteomas localized in femur (29), tibia (10), calcaneus (2), talus (2), metatarsus (2), humerus (1), sacrum (1), scapula (1), olecranon (1), patella (1) and thoracic vertebra (1) were treated with CT-guided RF ablation using the Cooltiptrade mark Tyco Healthcare probe.
  • CONCLUSION: CT-guided percutaneous RF ablation of osteoid osteomas using the water-cooled probe is a safe, effective and minimally invasive procedure with high success rate and lack of relapses.

  • Metastatic disease, myeloma, and lymphoma are the most common malignant spinal tumors.
  • Hemangioma is the most common benign tumor of the spine.
  • Other primary osseous lesions of the spine are more unusual but may exhibit characteristic imaging features that can help the radiologist develop a differential diagnosis.
  • Because of the complex anatomy of the vertebrae, CT is more useful than conventional radiography for evaluating lesion location and analyzing bone destruction and condensation.
  • The diagnosis of spinal tumors is based on patient age, topographic features of the tumor, and lesion pattern as seen at CT and MR imaging.
  • A systematic approach is useful for recognizing tumors of the spine with characteristic features such as bone island, osteoid osteoma, osteochondroma, chondrosarcoma, vertebral angioma, and aneurysmal bone cyst.
  • In the remaining cases, the differential diagnosis may include other primary spinal tumors, vertebral metastases and major nontumoral lesions simulating a vertebral tumor, Paget disease, spondylitis, echinococcal infection, and aseptic osteitis.

  • [Title] Histological evaluation of drill fragments obtained during osteoid osteoma radiofrequency ablation.
  • OBJECTIVE: Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign bone tumor diagnosed mainly on the basis of the patient's history and radiological data.
  • The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of a histological evaluation of the bone fragments obtained during radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
  • Bone fragments collected from the drill were examined by two experienced pathologists, independently.
  • In 27 cases (69.2%) this diagnosis was confirmed pathologically.
  • CONCLUSION: Histological confirmation of OO based on drill fragments is similarly frequent as previously reported for standard bone biopsy.

  • Periosteal osteoid osteoma is extremely rare.
  • The diagnosis is not always clear.
  • We report a case of periosteal osteoid osteoma arising from the posterior surface of the right distal femur in a 21-year-old woman.
  • After careful evaluation and excisional biopsy, histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma, showing the nidus, surrounding osteosclerosis, and catarrhal synovitis.

  • [Title] [Osteoid osteoma of the wrist joint resembling tenosynovitis].
  • Osteoid osteoma of bones of the wrist joint is a relatively rare lesion.
  • This article presents a series of three patients, one with osteoid osteoma of the styloid process of the radius and two with osteoid osteoma of the capitate bone.
  • X-rays, tomography and bone scan revealed the characteristic findings of osteoid osteoma.
  • Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis.
  • It is suggested that in any case of persistent unexplained pain of the wrist or clinical symptoms resembling those of tenosynovitis, osteoid osteoma of the styloid process of the radius or of the carpal bones should also be included in the differential diagnosis.
  • The recommended treatment of osteoid osteoma is "en bloc" excision of this tumour in the affected bone, resulting in complete relief of pain and absence of functional disturbances.
