  • CASE REPORT: Herein, a rare case of lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma arising in the parotid gland of a 14-year-old Japanese woman is presented.
  • CONCLUSION: This is the sixth case of lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma in the English literature.
  • Recognition of this rare subtype of pleomorphic adenoma is important for clinical diagnosis and management.

  • BACKGROUND: Carcinoma in pleomorphic salivary adenoma is a common histologic subtype of primary parotid malignancy.
  • METHODS: In this study, 28 patients (predominantly male) with histologically diagnosed carcinoma in pleomorphic salivary adenoma presenting over 10 years were retrospectively reviewed.
  • RESULTS: Only 25 percent of patients had a previously treated pleomorphic salivary adenoma.
  • Although the presenting features suggested malignancy in some cases, overall they were nonspecific, overlapping with the presentation of benign disease.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Carcinoma in pleomorphic salivary adenoma is very difficult to diagnose preoperatively.
  • While good locoregional disease control could be achieved with surgery and radiotherapy, carcinoma in pleomorphic salivary adenoma was shown to be aggressive with a high disease-specific rate of mortality.

  • A total of 268 patients were treated for parotid gland lesions at department of Head and Neck Surgery of Latvian Oncological Center between 1996 and 2000, and the results were analyzed retrospectively.
  • The objective was to analyze the incidence and factors associated with facial nerve dysfunction after different types of parotidectomies with facial nerve dissection and to compare the changing attitudes towards the pathology and surgical treatment in order to better define prevention and management of pleomorphic adenoma recurrences.
  • Recurences after the surgical treatment of benign diseases were observed in 12 patients (5.2%).

  • INTRODUCTION: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign neoplasm characterized by the basaloid appearance of the tumour cells and the lack of myxo-chondroid stromal component present in pleomorphic adenoma.
  • AIM: We report a case of basal cell adenoma of membranous type, highly suspected of malignancy because of the presence of mediastinal lymph nodes and pulmonary nodules which finally were related to an associated sarcoidosis.
  • OBSERVATION: Our patient was an 80-year-old woman who presented a swelling of the right parotid two years ago.
  • So the diagnosis of metastatic malignant salivary gland tumor was suspected.
  • Finally, the histological examination concluded to a basal cell adenoma of membranous type with sarcoidosis granulomas in the parotid and in the lymph nodes.
  • CONCLUSION: The BCA is a benign tumor located generally in the parotid gland.

  • AIM OF THE WORK: The authors present unusually rare case primary multiple synchronicus benign tumor of the ipsilateral parotid gland: oncocytoma and Warthin's tumor, which is rare among occasionally occurred multiple tumors with different histology in the salivary glands.
  • MATERIAL AND METHOD: A 71-year-old man presented with the tumor in the right parotid gland.
  • We performed excision of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland.
  • The preoperative ultrasonography and macroscopic analysis of the removed parotid gland tissue revealed only one tumor recognised histopathologically as adenolimphoma, but upon histopathological examination Warthin's tumor proved to coexist with oncocytoma.
  • The superficial parotidectomy protects from the recrudescence of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland tumors.
  • The coexistence of the oncocytoma and Warthin's in one parotid gland is extremely rare.

  • Although infarction of parotid gland pleomorphic adenoma (PA) following fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has been well-documented, spontaneous infarction of PA has remained as an uncommon entity in the literature.
  • To our knowledge, we report the second case of spontaneous infarction occurring in a parotid gland PA.
  • A 44-yr-old man presented with a 2-yr history of slowly enlarging right parotid mass, which had become painful 1 mo before performing FNA biopsy.
  • Although appears to be rare, spontaneous infarction of PA should be considered in the differential diagnosis, since necrosis may mimic carcinoma and cause misinterpretation of necrosis as an indication of malignancy, in an otherwise benign salivary gland neoplasm.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics of basal cell adenoma (BCA) and to compare the diagnosis/treatment of BCA with those of Warthin's tumor (WT) and pleomorphic adenoma (PA).
  • Among 192 patients with benign tumors of the parotid gland who underwent surgery, 9 had BCA.
  • All of these tumors showed a benign pattern on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Most PA and BCA lesions developed in the upper part of the parotid gland.
  • BCA is the third most common of the benign parotid tumors, following WT and PA, although its incidence is low.
  • When PA and WT are ruled out by FNAB after a tentative diagnosis of benign tumor has been based on imaging findings, BCA should be considered.

  • [Title] Superficial parotidectomy versus retrograde partial superficial parotidectomy in treating benign salivary gland tumor (pleomorphic adenoma).
  • PURPOSE: Of all benign salivary gland tumors of the parotid gland, pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most common.
  • It accounts for 60% to 70% of all benign tumors of the parotid gland.
  • This neoplasm arises in patients in the fourth to sixth decade of life, with a female predominance.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 48 patients who underwent excision of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland between 1996 and 2005 at Rambam Medical Center: 18 were treated surgically with the classical superficial parotidectomy (SP) technique, using an anterograde approach, and 30 were treated with retrograde partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP).
  • We compared the 2 surgical techniques in terms of surgical time, histopathologic size of the lesion, amount of excised healthy parotid tissue, histologic margin, and the preservation of the capsule/pseudocapsule.
  • Much more healthy parotid tissue was taken out with the classical procedure (mean, 51.4 +/- 13.6 mm; median, 50 mm) than with the retrograde PSP technique (mean, 39.2 +/- 11.8; median, 35 mm) (P = .01).

  • [Title] A case of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland metastasizing to a mediastinal lymph node.
  • OBJECTIVE: Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common salivary gland tumors and are typically cured with complete surgical excision.
  • There are rare reports, however, in which these histologically benign tumors have inexplicably metastasized to distant sites.
  • We present a case of a patient who presented, 27 years after excision of a parotid pleomorphic adenoma, with a recurrence in the parotid bed and a mediastinal metastasis.
  • METHODS: A 43-year-old woman presented with a mass in the right parotid bed 27 years after excision of a pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid.
  • The patient's presentation, workup, and final diagnosis of benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma will be discussed, along with a pertinent review of the literature.
  • RESULTS: A diagnosis of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma was made from a fine needle aspiration biopsy of the right parotid mass.
  • On subsequent computed tomographic scan, chest images revealed an incidental left mediastinal mass, which also proved to be a pleomorphic adenoma on computed tomography-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy.
  • Examination of the pathology specimens confirmed a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma in both the parotid bed and the mediastinum.
  • No histologic characteristics of malignancy were seen in either specimen; therefore, a diagnosis of benign metastasizing mixed tumor was rendered.
  • CONCLUSION: Benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma is a rare and controversial but distinct clinical entity.
  • Although the definition of the term benign precludes metastatic disease, these tumors do not demonstrate any malignant features yet metastasize to distant sites.
  • It remains to be determined whether these benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenomas are really low-grade salivary malignancies.

  • OBJECTIVE: To determine the morphological pattern of parotid tumours.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: During this study, 204 patients with parotid tumours were registered.
  • RESULTS: Out of 204 cases, 152 (74.5%) were benign and 52 (25.5%) were malignant.
  • Benign tumours were more common in females whereas malignant tumours were common in males.
  • The mean age of patients was 34 years and 42 years for benign and malignant tumours respectively.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was most common benign tumor (83.5%), followed by Warthins tumour.
  • Superficial lobe of parotid gland was the commonest site, 120 benign and all 52 malignant tumours arising from it while 32 benign tumours originated from deep lobe.
  • Parotid swelling for years was main feature of benign tumours, whereas malignant tumours presented with pain, fixation to skin or underlying structure, cervical lymphadenopathy and facial palsy.
  • CONCLUSION: Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumour and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was most common malignant tumour.

  • BACKGROUND: Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) is a rare, incompletely understood enigmatic entity having the histologic appearance of benign pleomorphic adenoma and clinically malignant behavior.
  • We report a case of MPA of the parotid gland that metastasized to the scapular region 6 years after the appearance of the primary lesion in the left parotid gland.
  • CASE: A 35-year-old woman presented with a palpable soft to firm mass of 3-cm diameter in the left scapular region that was slightly mobile over the underlying structures and a small swelling at the operated site of the parotid region.
  • The patient had a prior history of surgical removal of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid salivary gland.
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) smears of both sites demonstrated the 3 components (i.e., stromal, mesenchymal and epithelial) of benign pleomorphic adenoma with benign features.
  • CONCLUSION: The appearance of a mass lesion or subcutaneous nodule with a prior history of pleomorphic adenoma should alert for the possibilities of metastatic carcinoma, metastatic carcinosarcoma and MPA.
  • With well-established cytomorphology of pleomorphic adenoma, FNAC remains the investigation method of choice for metastatic workup of a case of locally recurrent pleomorphic adenoma.

  • OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the significance of cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein gene expression in human parotid gland tumours.
  • METHODS: We retrospectively analysed immunohistochemical staining for cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein in parotid gland tumours.
  • RESULTS: Cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein was consistently detected in the normal parotid gland.
  • Regarding benign parotid gland tumours, cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein was present in 13 of 18 pleomorphic adenomas, in all Warthin tumours tested (21/21) and in all cases of basal cell adenoma tested (four of four).
  • In contrast, positive staining for cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein was less often observed in malignant parotid tumours.
  • CONCLUSIONS: There was a statistically significantly reduced expression of cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein in malignant parotid gland tumours, compared with benign parotid gland tumours (p < 0.05).
  • These results suggest that a low level of cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein expression in parotid gland tumours may be associated with malignancy.

  • OBJECTIVES: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent surgery for parotid gland masses.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients (25 females, 25 males; mean age 48.5 years; range 18 to 76 years) who underwent surgery for parotid gland masses were evaluated with regard to age, sex, preoperative diagnostic methods, histopathologic diagnoses, and surgical techniques.
  • Histopathological diagnoses were benign in 33 patients (66%), malignant in nine patients (18%), and tumor-like pathologies in eight patients (16%), the most common being pleomorphic adenoma (n=28, 56%), Warthin's tumor (n=4, 8%), and squamous cell carcinoma (n=4, 8%).
  • Mortality occurred in one patient with metastasis to the parotid gland.
  • CONCLUSION: Superficial parotidectomy is the minimal surgery for parotid gland masses.
  • If the deep lobe of the gland is involved, total parotidectomy should be performed with preservation of the facial nerve.

  • Benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma is a rare neoplasm, in which the benign appearing pleomorphic adenoma, without any histological evidence of malignancy, metastasizes to distant sites including lung.
  • In the absence of clinical history of a pre-existing myoepithelial neoplasm, the presence of myoepithelial cells in the lung or any other organs besides salivary glands may create diagnostic difficulty.
  • Here we present the cytologic findings of such a metastatic tumor found in the lung FNA and pleural fluid specimens from a 64-year-old woman, with a history of local recurrent salivary gland pleomorphic adenomas, who presented with multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules and pleural effusion.
  • The diagnosis of benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma was made based on clinical information and cytomorphology, and confirmed by immunocytochemistry.

  • PURPOSE: To assess the additional value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US) to physical examination (PE) and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the preoperative determination of the location and histology of parotid gland tumors.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prospectively, 99 patients with 77 benign and 22 malignant lesions were included; 82 underwent parotidectomy.
  • RESULTS: Of the MRI characteristics, incomplete demarcation from normal parotid gland tissue showed the highest positive predictive value (PPV) for malignancy of 0.48.
  • Cytology correctly predicted the benign or malignant nature of the tumor in all cases.
  • CONCLUSION: FNAC is the only accurate investigation for classifying a parotid gland tumor as benign or malignant.

  • BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Most parotid tumors grow slowly.
  • This study was to analyze the CT features of parotid tumors.
  • METHODS: CT images of 133 patients with 157 lesions of parotid tumors, confirmed by histopathology, were reviewed.
  • RESULTS: Among the 157 lesions, 110 (70.1%) were benign tumors, 18 (11.5%) were borderline tumors, and 29 (18.5%) were malignant tumors; 80 (72.7%) benign lesions and 14 (77.8%) borderline lesions located in the superficial lobe, whereas 7 (24.1%) malignant lesions located in the deep lobe and 10 (34.5%) in both the superficial lobe and the deep lobe; 99 (90.0%) benign lesions had sharp margins, 8 (44.4%) borderline lesions had sharp margins and 10 (55.6%) had partly unsharp margins, 10 (34.5%) malignant lesions had partly unsharp margins and 11 (37.9%) had unsharp margins.
  • Most benign lesions were round (68/110, 61.8%) or oval (23/110, 20.9%), while malignant lesions were often irregular (14/29, 48.3%).
  • All the lesions which involved the bed of parotid gland were malignant.
  • No benign tumor involved adjacent structures.
  • CONCLUSION: On CT images, a parotid tumor located in the superficial lobe, with a round or oval contour and sharp margin, is more likely to be a benign tumor; otherwise, it might be a malignant tumor.

  • INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this work was the desire for handing over authors' experience in diagnostic and operative procedures in the case of the parotid gland's tumours, presenting gathered material, ways of removing tumours and curing results.
  • MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study is the analysis of 317 patients; 180 (58%) women and 131 (42%) men with parotid gland tumours in patients treated in ENT Department between X. 1989 - XII. 2006.
  • The frequency of incidence of benign tumours was 81%.
  • The most frequent tumours were pleomorphic adenoma and adenolymphoma.
  • Malignant tumours constituted 19% of all parotid gland tumours.
  • (1) There were 81% cases of benign neoplasm and 19% malignant neoplasm in presented material. (2) The result of parotid gland treatment depends on tumor's histopathology, the period of disease, the size of tumour, its expansion into the neighbourhood, infiltrating of the facial nerve and metastases into the lymph nodes. (3) Radical resection of tumour and metastases, reconstructing the continuity of tissues and maintaining the quality of patients life, should be the principle of surgical treatment.

  • INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study is to estimate the incidence of major salivary gland tumors in a geographically well-defined area (the County of Funen, Denmark) and to analyse the demographic data and distribution of histological types.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with salivary gland tumors were identified through a search on pathology and diagnosis codes in the period 1984-2003, which initially resulted in a group of 951 patients.
  • RESULTS: The incidence of major salivary gland tumors for the County of Funen is calculated to 7.3 per 100,000 residents per year.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma (55%) was the most common type, followed by adenolymphoma (29%).
  • 90% of the tumors were found in the parotid gland - 93% benign and 7% malignant.
  • 10% were located in the submandibular gland - 73% benign and 27% malignant.
  • Only one neoplasm was located in the sublingual gland and it was malignant (100%).
  • CONCLUSION: The incidence of major salivary gland tumors in the County of Funen is calculated to 7.3 per 100,000 inhabitants per year which is equivalent to 383 new cases in Denmark per year.

  • It is still poorly understood how and which benign pleomorphic adenoma cells transform into its malignant form, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma.
  • METHODS: We have established five cell systems from a benign pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland of a 61-year-old woman.
  • RESULTS: We established and characterized five cell systems (designated as SM-AP1 to SM-AP5) from a benign pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.
  • In addition, they had ductal arrangements or plasmacytoid appearances of tumor cells and myxoid or hyaline stromata, indicating some characteristics of pleomorphic adenoma.
  • CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates in vitro that certain cell types from pleomorphic adenoma are able to clone and survive over a long term and develop subcutaneous tumors in nude mice.

  • They mostly grow in larger parotid glands.
  • The aim of this work is to analyze operative treatment of parotid gland tumours performed in the years 2004-2008.
  • Between 2004-2008, 128 patients underwent surgical procedure caused by parotid gland tumour, including 72 women (56%) and 56 men (44%) aged between 12-80 (the average age was 49.1); the procedures were performed in the Otolaryngology Department of the Medical Military Institute.
  • Our material includes benign tumours diagnosed in 113 patients (88.3%) and malignant ones in 15 patients (11.7%).
  • The most frequent parotid gland tumour is polymorphic adenoma (50%), the second most frequent one is lympho-adenoma (33.6%).

  • Between 2006 and 2009, 74 cases of salivary gland neoplasms were analyzed retrospectively, of which 44 (60%) were benign and 30 (40%) malignant.
  • 61 % percent of neoplasms were in the parotid gland, 22% in the minor salivary glands including sublingual salivary glands, and 17% in the submandibular glands.
  • The most common benign neoplasm was pleomorphic adenoma (64%), and the most common malignant neoplasm were adenoid cystic carcinoma (17%) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (23%).
  • We analyze the incidence and distribution of all types of salivary gland neoplasms in our series, and provide data for comparison with other epidemiological studies from different geographical sites and races.
  • Further epidemiological surveys should be encouraged for better understanding of the disease and to provide early and better treatment of salivary gland neoplasms.

  • There is continued controversy over the extent of parotidectomy required for removal of a benign pleomorphic adenoma from the parotid gland.
  • As a result of experience gained in the first half of the twentieth century, it was recommended that superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve dissection should be the minimal biopsy for pleomorphic adenoma.
  • Since that time, however, research has indicated that partial parotidectomy or extracapsular dissection of benign pleomorphic adenoma can be accomplished with preservation of the facial nerve without an increase in tumour recurrence.

  • Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma poses a challenge to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Herein we describe an extremely unusual case, which presented initially as an intracapsular carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma in the right parotid gland.
  • The first recurrence, after an interval of 8 years, showed only recurrence of the benign component.
  • No ductal carcinoma as seen in the initial intracapsular carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma was identified.
  • This case report elucidates the atypical clinical behaviour and interesting histological features encountered within this group of salivary neoplasm.

  • BACKGROUND: Epithelial salivary gland tumors are very uncommon in pediatric age.
  • RESULTS: The major salivary glands were the main site of tumor occurrence (79% of cases arose in parotid glands); 37 patients had benign tumors (pleomorphic adenoma), 15 had malignant tumors (12 mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 9 low grade).
  • All the patients were treated by surgery; local relapses after parotidectomy were 4% and 25%, in benign and malignant tumors, respectively.
  • When tumor enucleation was performed, recurrences occurred in 50% of benign neoplasms.
  • At the time of the report, all patients with benign tumors were alive, 35(95%) without evidence of disease; only one patient with malignant tumor died of disease.
  • Parotidectomy (total or superficial) is the best choice for achieving good cure rates in both benign and malignant tumors.

  • AIM: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze all cases of parotid tumors treated at our institution from 1953 to 2003.
  • METHODS: All patients with primary parotid tumors were selected; clinical and histopathological data were analyzed and described.
  • RESULTS: 600 cases of parotid tumors were selected; 369 were benign and 231 were malignant.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent benign tumor.
  • CONCLUSION: Patients with parotid tumors treated at our institution were mainly adults, with marginally more female patients.

  • BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common neoplasm of the major salivary glands.
  • There are three subtypes of malignant PA: carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA); carcinosarcoma (true malignant mixed tumor) and metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma.
  • For proper diagnosis of CXPA, a statement of coexistence of pleomorphic adenoma and carcinoma (or carcinoma after prior PA surgery) is needed.
  • Own material is presented because of rarity and clinicopathologic specificity of this neoplasm.
  • In 15 cases, tumor was localized in the parotid and in 4 in the submandibular gland.
  • Duration of symptoms of benign PA was from 2 to 40 years (mean 17.8 years).
  • Adjacent structures were invaded by neoplasm in 5 cases.

  • Neoplasm of salivary glands constitutes about 3% of all tumours of head and neck.
  • About 80% of all tumours of salivary glands is located in parotid gland, from 10 to 20% - in submandibular gland and several percent in sublingual and small salivary gland.
  • This work aims at the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of non-malignant neoplasm in parotid and submandibular gland based on the material collected at the ENT Department of the Medical University in Poznan in the years 1995-2006.
  • The number of non-malignant neoplasm was 675, and the number of malignant neoplasm was 103.
  • Main aim of this work has been achieved through the execution of partial steps: the analysis of the trends in occurrence of non-malignant neoplasm in the 12-year period, the analysis of the epidemiological differences: sex, age, place of residence - town or country, duration of symptoms, diameter of the tumour at the time the patient reported for treatment, histological structures that were carried on the basis of the comparison of data collected in the two periods of time: period I--the years 1995-2000 and period II--the years 2001-2006.
  • In both periods the most frequent benign tumour was the mixed tumour (54.9% of all tumours) and constituted 60% and 54% of all tumours in the respective periods analyzed.
  • It was 3 cm with regard to the most frequently occurring tumours: adenoma polymorphum, adenoma monomorphum and cystadenolymphoma.

  • OBJECTIVE: To document the pattern of salivary gland neoplasia in Maiduguri, Nigeria.
  • RESULTS: The palatal (71.9%) and parotid (78.3%) glands were the most common minor and major salivary glands involved, with a benign-malignant ratio of 1:1 and 1.4:1, respectively.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma (44.3%) was the most common salivary gland neoplasm recorded.
  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (10.1%) was the most common salivary gland malignancy, occurring in the second and sixth decades; of equal gender distribution and predominantly in the palate (50%).
  • There was a higher prevalence of malignancies of the parotid than previously reported for northern Nigeria (P = 0.036).
  • CONCLUSION: Pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma were the most commonly reported benign and malignant neoplasia in this series.

  • OBJECTIVE: To describe a case and discuss the differential diagnosis of facial nerve paresis presenting years after resection of multiple recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenoma.
  • PATIENTS: Case report of a patient on immunosuppressive therapy with facial nerve weakness 3 years after last resection for multiple recurrent pleomorphic adenoma.
  • RESULTS: Final diagnosis of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma causing compression of the facial nerve at the stylomastoid foramen.
  • CONCLUSION: Facial nerve weakness caused by a benign salivary gland tumor is rare.
  • Although alternate diagnoses must be considered, recurrent pleomorphic adenoma alone may impair facial function by impinging on the nerve in the stylomastoid foramen.

  • CONCLUSION: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the diagnostic modality of first choice for characterization of parotid mass lesions, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) should not be requested routinely.
  • OBJECTIVES: Although both FNAC and MRI are useful preoperative diagnostic modalities for parotid mass lesions, it is not well established which modality is more effective.
  • In the present study we sought to address the relative value of FNAC and MRI in relation to the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant parotid mass lesions.
  • SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Eighty-one patients with parotid mass lesions (60 benign and 21 malignant) who had preoperatively undergone FNAC and MRI were reviewed retrospectively.
  • Either FNAC or MRI served equally to predict the malignant nature of parotid mass lesions.
  • Accurate histological typing rates by FNAC were 80% and 62% for benign and malignant lesions, respectively.

  • Acute and chronic sialadenitis, different benign and malignant neoplasms are the common causes which present with salivary gland swelling.
  • The study was done with 40 cases of salivary gland swelling.
  • Out of 40 cases, 25 involved the parotid gland, most common age group affected was 20 - 40 years and male: female ratio was 5: 3.
  • Among these 3 cases, 2 were adenoid cystic carcinoma which was cytologically diagnosed as benign neoplasm (monomorphic adenoma).
  • One case of Warthin's tumour was cytologically diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma.
  • This study corroborates well with other studies including immunohistochemical findings. p53 expression was found to be related with nature of the neoplasm.

  • This multicentre study involved 28 Italian ORL Centres responding to a questionnaire sent by us which allowed recruitment of a high large number of cases of parotid neoplasms observed over a 10-year period.
  • Benign tumours account for 80% of case histories with a relationship 1:4 M/F, the most frequent being pleomorphic adenoma (57.3% of cases), followed by Warthin's tumour (32.4%), this rating not having been confirmed in case histories (8-10%) in the literature.
  • Surgical treatment of benign tumours consisted, in 50% of cases, in superficial paroditectomy and in approximately 30% of total paroditectomy.
  • Enucleoresection was limited to approximately 15% of neoplasms, enucleation to <10% of cases with only 2% of pleomorph adenoma due to the well-known anatomo-pathological characteristics which may lead to relapse.
  • Oncological results obtained were compared with those reported in the literature: in fact for all benign neoplasms relapse ratings are about 5%, while for malignant tumours the worst prognosis was in squamous cell carcinoma with median of 37.7 on survival and metastasis rate of 16.5%.

  • Ceruminal glands are modified sweat glands of the skin of the external auditory meatus that may give rise to (a) benign tumors such as ceruminous adenoma, pleomorphic adenoma, and syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and (b) malignant tumors such as ceruminous adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
  • These tumors are very rare and usually have a benign course.
  • In this report, we describe an unusual case of pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal associated with chronic infection of the middle ear.
  • Subsequent biopsy and histologic examination revealed pleomorphic adenoma of the external ear canal, possibly with malignant elements.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging showed no intracranial extension or any association with the adjacent parotid gland.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Pleomorphic adenoma is an extremely rare tumor arising from the ceruminal glands of the external ear canal.
  • Nonspecific presentation and difficult histologic diagnosis characterize this benign neoplasm.

  • AIM: The aim of the study is the analyses of salivary gland tumors on 193 patients who underwent surgery at the Otolaryngology Clinical Ward of 4th Military Clinical Hospital with the Polyclinic in Wrocław in the years 1992-2008.
  • MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the group of patients with salivary gland tumors, which were analysed, there were 106 woman (54.9%) and 87 men (45.1%).
  • RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Tumors located in 48.7% in parotid gland, 49.7% in submandibular salivary gland and 1.6% in hypoglossal salivary gland.
  • Tumor--like lesions constituted 56%, adenoma 38.9% and malignat tumors 4.7% of all glands tumors.
  • Tumors salivary glands both benign and malignat occur at women about the average age of 50.9 more often.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common neoplasm.
  • Tumors located in parotid salivary glands are often on the left side.

  • PURPOSE: We report on 52 juvenile and adolescent patients with benign and malignant tumors of the salivary glands.
  • RESULTS: Benign tumors had their highest incidence in puberty and postpuberty.
  • Forty patients (20 girls and 20 boys; 77%) had benign growths and 12 patients (9 girls and 3 boys; 23%) suffered from malignant neoplasms.
  • After surgery for benign tumors we saw no postoperative recurrences in long-term follow-up.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Salivary gland diseases are rare in childhood and adolescence.
  • This is particularly true for the malignant parotid tumors that are more frequent in juvenile patients, a fact that has to be considered in diagnosis and therapy.

  • OBJECTIVE: To describe the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) features of various salivary gland lesions and to analyze the respective diagnostic value and pitfalls.
  • METHODS: 113 FNAC specimens of salivary gland lesions were reviewed and correlated with clinical and histopathologic findings.
  • RESULTS: The FNAC diagnostic failure (2); non-neoplastic lesions (12); benign neoplasm (82) and malignant neoplasm (17).
  • Cytologically, the distinction between cellular pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and basal cell adenoma could be difficult due to their overlapping morphologic features.
  • The cytologic patterns of primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid were indistinguishable from those of metastatic nasopharyngeal undifferentiated carcinoma.
  • The three inaccurately diagnosed cases of FNAC are, as follows: reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of lymph node mistaken as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma diagnosed as "scanty atypical cells present" and primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma mistaken as benign lymphoepithelial lesion.
  • On the basis of FNAC, 97.4% (110 /113) were correctly depicted as benign (95/96; 99.0%) or malignant (15/17; 88.2%).
  • Furthermore, 90.3% (102 /113) (specificity = 91.9%; 102/111) were accurately diagnosed, including 91.7% (88/96) benign lesions (specificity = 92.6% ; 88/95) and 82.4% (14/17) malignant tumors (specificity = 87.5%; 14/16).
  • CONCLUSIONS: FNAC is reliable in distinguishing benign and malignant salivary gland lesions.
  • On the other hand, due to the pitfalls in cytologic diagnosis of certain salivary gland tumors, tissue biopsy for histologic examination may be necessary.

  • The incidence of this histologic finding in salivary gland sites is not known.
  • We sought to describe the incidence of cutaneous adnexal differentiation in benign mixed tumors of the palate, lip, and parotid gland.
  • Benign mixed tumors of the palate (n=30), lip (n=13), and parotid gland (n=37) resected between 1980 and 2009 at a single academic medical institution were reviewed.
  • All hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections containing neoplasm were reviewed by all authors including one dermatopathologist (S.H.O.).
  • After confirming the diagnosis of benign mixed tumor, we evaluated for morphologic evidence of cutaneous adnexal differentiation and metaplastic epithelial and stromal changes.
  • Cutaneous adnexal differentiation was seen in 20% of palate and 39% of lip benign mixed tumors but in no parotid tumors.
  • Varying amounts of stromal adipose were seen in 62, 37, and 22% of lip, palate, and parotid tumors.
  • When cutaneous adnexal differentiation occurs in salivary gland pleomorphic adenomas, it can present a diagnostic pitfall that must not be misinterpreted as carcinoma at biopsy, fine needle aspiration, or frozen section.

  • OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the types and distribution of neoplasm of salivary glands in a Turkish population.
  • STUDY DESIGN: The histological diagnosis records of the Department of Pathology at Cumhuriyet University were reevaluated for 125 patients who were treated for salivary gland tumors from 1987 to 2008.
  • RESULTS: A total of 125 primary salivary gland neoplasms, consisting of 95 (76%) benign and 30 (24%) malignant groups were recorded.
  • The most common major and minor salivary gland sites were the parotid (61.6%) and palatal glands (9.6%), respectively.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent benign tumor followed by Warthin's tumor.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Although there were some discrepancies, the characteristics of salivary gland tumors of Turkish patients are in line with those of patients from other countries according to tumor type, tumor site distribution, and age and sex of patients.

  • We present a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of 21 Chinese patients with oncocytoma of salivary gland origin, a rare benign tumour composed exclusively of large epithelial cells with eosinophilic granular cytoplasm (oncocytes).
  • All the tumours occurred in the parotid except one in the palate.
  • In summary, clinical diagnosis for an oncocytoma is challenging for its similar features to other benign tumours.

  • Oncocytoma is a rare, benign salivary neoplasm composed of mitochondria-rich cells called oncocytes.
  • Although oncocytoma usually occurs in the parotid glands, it has much less commonly been reported to occur in minor salivary gland tissues.
  • Although there have been a few reported cases of oncocytomas being found in the parapharyngeal space, most if not all cases seem to be extensions of deep lobe parotid tumors.
  • Excision of the mass, through a transcervical approach, demonstrated it to be an isolated oncocytoma of the parapharyngeal space, noncontiguous with the parotid gland.
