  • Adenoid cystic/basal cell carcinoma (ACBCC) is a rare neoplasm in the prostate.
  • The HER-2/neu (c-erbB-2) gene has been reportedly overexpressed in adenoid cystic carcinomas in other organs, but its status in prostatic ACBCC was uncertain.
  • Benign acini expressed HER-2/neu only in the basal layer.
  • The finding of strong, consistent HER-2/neu expression in ACBCC suggests that treatment with Herceptin (trastuzumab) may be effective in patients with this rare tumour.

  • AIM: The aim of the present study is to establish the relative frequency and distribution of benign and malignant epithelial neoplasms of salivary glands in the Pathology and Cytology Laboratory, STUDY DESIGN: Historic cohort.
  • RESULTS: Out of 162,312 registered cases, 245 were salivary gland epithelial neoplasms and 187 (76.33%) were benign and 58 (23.67%) were malignant.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent benign neoplasm (89.94%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma represented the most prevalent malignant neoplasm (22.41%).
  • The benign neoplasms occurred mainly between the second and third decades of life and showed preference for female, while malignant neoplasms were diagnosed between the sixth and seventh decades of life and in women.

  • Between 2006 and 2009, 74 cases of salivary gland neoplasms were analyzed retrospectively, of which 44 (60%) were benign and 30 (40%) malignant.
  • The most common benign neoplasm was pleomorphic adenoma (64%), and the most common malignant neoplasm were adenoid cystic carcinoma (17%) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (23%).

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare type of breast carcinoma with a good prognosis.
  • We present two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma diagnosed in the Surgical Department of Coltea Hospital in the last 3 years.
  • The first case is a 66 years old patient with a breast tumor that has clinical and imagistic features compatible with a benign diagnosis.
  • The frozen sections established the diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma, confirmed by histopathologic examination of paraffin embedded tissue and immunohistochemistry.
  • The second case is a 68 years old patient with a breast tumor located in the central quadrant of the left breast, with skin infiltration.
  • Preoperatory fine needle aspiration is sugestive of a papillary tumor, so the cytologic exam cannot establish malignancy.
  • The frozen sections established the diagnosis of ductal invasive carcinoma and histopathologic examination of paraffin embedded tissue and immunohistochemistry established the diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with ductal invasive carcinoma grade I and adenomyoepitelioma.
  • In both cases the treatment was surgical resection with tumor excision and free resection margins.

  • INTRODUCTION: Primary tracheal tumors are rare, and composed of various benign and malignant pathologies.
  • METHODS: From January 1989 through December 2006, 37 patients (14 with benign tumors, 23 with malignant tumors) were treated in a tertiary referral center.
  • RESULTS: Benign tumors comprised of various pathologies.
  • Squamous cell carcinomas (n = 11) and adenoid cystic carcinomas (n = 9) comprised most of the malignant tumors.
  • Five-year overall survival rate was 41.1% for squamous cell carcinoma and 45.7% for adenoid cystic carcinoma and no statistically significant difference (p = 0.673) was observed.
  • CONCLUSION: Papillomas were difficult to manage, however, other benign tumors were successfully treated.

  • [Title] [Analysis of 2161 cases of neoplasm in oral maxillofacial region in Xinjiang].
  • OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence and constituent characteristic of neoplasm in oromaxillo-facial region in Xinjiang.
  • METHODS: A total of 2161 patients with benign or malignant oral-maxillofacial tumors diagnosed in Department of Dentofacial Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical College from 1995 to 2009 were analyzed retrospectively.
  • RESULTS: Of the 2161 cases, 58.49% (1264/2161) was benign tumors, 33.13% (716/2161) malignant tumors, and 8.38% (181/2161) tumor-like lesions.
  • The most common benign tumors were pleomorphic adenoma, hemangioma, papilloma, adenolymphoma and ameloblastoma.
  • The most common malignant tumors of salivary gland were adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • CONCLUSIONS: The common pathological type of oral and maxillofacial benign neoplasm and the most common sites of malignancy in Xinjiang region were similar to those of other places inside and outside the country.

  • The clinicopathologic spectrum ranges from benign to malignant but there are important differences as compared with those of their salivary counterpart.
  • In the breast, benign adenomyoepithelioma is recognized in addition to malignant one, whereas in the salivary gland a histologically similar tumor is designated as epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma without a separate benign subgroup.
  • Mammary adenoid cystic carcinoma is a low-grade neoplasm compared with its salivary equivalent.
  • Well established examples of this group include pleomorphic adenoma, adenomyoepithelioma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma.

  • BACKGROUND: Salivary glands tumors are relatively uncommon neoplasm with widely variable histopathologic and biologic characteristics.
  • Alteration in some proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes may lead to the development and progression of these tumors.
  • AIMS: The purpose of this study was to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of P(53) and bcl-2 in some salivary gland tumors in relation to tumor size, histologic grade, and extent of invasion.
  • SETTING AND DESIGN: The sample consisted of 22 formalin-fixed paraffin embedded blocks of benign and malignant salivary glands tumors.
  • MATERIAL AND METHOD: P(53) and bcl-2 immunoreactivity was semi-quantitatively evaluated in at least 1000 cells examined under the microscope at 40x magnification and recorded as percentage of P(53) or bcl-2 positive tumor cells over the total number of cells examined in the same area.
  • P(53)/bcl-2 immunostaining reactivity could be helpful in demonstrating salivary glands tumor behavior in terms of progression and extent of invasion.

  • Regarding benign parotid gland tumours, cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein was present in 13 of 18 pleomorphic adenomas, in all Warthin tumours tested (21/21) and in all cases of basal cell adenoma tested (four of four).
  • Cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein was present in 11 of 14 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, in two of five acinic cell carcinomas and in two of five adenoid cystic carcinomas.
  • CONCLUSIONS: There was a statistically significantly reduced expression of cluster of differentiation 9 glycoprotein in malignant parotid gland tumours, compared with benign parotid gland tumours (p < 0.05).

  • The authors present a series of 24 malignant neoplasms arising in preexisting benign spiradenoma (20), cylindroma (2), and spiradenocylindroma (2).
  • Nineteen patients (12 females, 7 males; age range, 41 to 92 y) had a solitary neoplasm (size range, 2.2 to 17.5 cm; median 4 cm), whereas the remaining 5 (4 females, 1 male; age range, 66 to 72 y) manifested clinical features of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome (BSS), an autosomal dominantly inherited disease characterized by widespread, small, benign neoplasms on which background larger malignant lesions appeared.
  • Microscopically, all cases showed the residuum of a preexisting benign neoplasm.
  • The histologic pattern of the malignant neoplasm correlated to some extent with the clinical course.
  • Given the morphologic diversity and complexity of the neoplasms in question, we propose using a more specific terminology with the precise description of the neoplasm components, rather than generic and less informative terms such as "spiradenocarcinoma" or "carcinoma ex cylindroma. "

  • To evaluate the role of NM23 in SGN, the expression patterns of NM23 in the following were compared: benign (pleomorphic adenoma) vs malignant (adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma) SGN, and primary malignancies with/without evidence of metastasis vs their metastatic implants (MI).
  • NM23 protein was found in the cytoplasm of 75% of benign SGN, 73.3% of primary SGN malignancies with no evidence of metastasis, 86.6% of primary SGN malignancies with evidence of metastasis, and 60% of MI.
  • There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of NM23-positive cells between benign and primary malignant tumors (p = 0.79), nor between primary malignancies with/without evidence of metastasis and MI (p = 0.51).

  • These results are presented in conjunction with a literature review of salivary tumors with a view to providing an up-to-date overview of the clinical course, prognosis, and treatment options for this rare tumor.
  • PROCEDURE: Fifty-two cases of epithelial salivary tumors were reviewed and the clinical-pathological information concerning tumor characteristics, therapy, and follow-up were collected.
  • RESULTS: The major salivary glands were the main site of tumor occurrence (79% of cases arose in parotid glands); 37 patients had benign tumors (pleomorphic adenoma), 15 had malignant tumors (12 mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 9 low grade).
  • All the patients were treated by surgery; local relapses after parotidectomy were 4% and 25%, in benign and malignant tumors, respectively.
  • When tumor enucleation was performed, recurrences occurred in 50% of benign neoplasms.
  • At the time of the report, all patients with benign tumors were alive, 35(95%) without evidence of disease; only one patient with malignant tumor died of disease.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Epithelial salivary glands tumor in children had different characteristics compared with their adult counterpart with respect to the frequency of histotypes and site of occurrence, but their prognosis seems to be similar.
  • Parotidectomy (total or superficial) is the best choice for achieving good cure rates in both benign and malignant tumors.

  • A total of 55 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded archived specimens comprising 19 adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC), 18 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas (PLGA) and 18 pleomorphic adenomas (PA) were utilized in this study.
  • Staining was graded as 0 (<1% positive tumor cells), 1+ (<25% positive tumor cells), 2+ (25-50% positive tumor cells), and 3+ (>50% positive cells).
  • The results showed that the malignant tumors were higher expressors of beta-6 than the benign tumors.
  • A majority of tumors in all three tumor types showed high expression of MMP1 with expression significantly greater in the PAs compared to ACCs (p=0.008).
  • We conclude that ACCs and PLGAs express beta-6, tenascin-C, and MMP-1, but that their expression patterns are not significantly different. beta-6 appears to be more closely associated with the malignant tumors, and MMP-1 more closely associated with the benign tumors.

  • RESULTS: Out of 204 cases, 152 (74.5%) were benign and 52 (25.5%) were malignant.
  • Benign tumours were more common in females whereas malignant tumours were common in males.
  • The mean age of patients was 34 years and 42 years for benign and malignant tumours respectively.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was most common benign tumor (83.5%), followed by Warthins tumour.
  • The most common malignant tumour was mucoepidermoid carcinoma (60%), followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • Superficial lobe of parotid gland was the commonest site, 120 benign and all 52 malignant tumours arising from it while 32 benign tumours originated from deep lobe.
  • Parotid swelling for years was main feature of benign tumours, whereas malignant tumours presented with pain, fixation to skin or underlying structure, cervical lymphadenopathy and facial palsy.

  • [Title] [Clinical study of lacrimal gland tumor involving anterior and middle cranial fossae].
  • OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical manifestations of lacrimal gland tumor involving the anterior and middle cranial fossae and the effect of transcranial-orbital approach in treatment of such tumor.
  • METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on the clinical data of 23 cases lacrimal gland tumor involving the anterior and middle cranial fossae confirmed by radiological examination, including 11 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, 6 cases of pleomorphic adenocarcinoma (malignant mixed tumor), 2 cases of adenocarcinoma, 1 case of squamous cell carcinoma, 1 case of ductal carcinoma, 1 case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and 1 case of benign mixed tumor, 15 males and 8 females, aged 42.5 (2 - 76), with a case history of 43 months (2 months to 27 years), with the chief complaints of progressive proptosis, disgenesia of the eye ball, and orbit pain, all undergoing transcranial-orbital operation from August 1998 to February. 2006.
  • Recurrence of tumor occurred in 4 cases, and 1 case died from distant metastasis of adenocarcinoma.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Malignant lacrimal gland tumors, mainly adenoid cystic carcinomas, incline to involve the anterior and middle cranial fossae.
  • Adequate orbital apex decompression and exposure of the tumor can result from suitable transcranial-orbital approach.
  • However, complete surgical excision is difficult, and the tumor has a tendency to recur post-operatively.

  • To determine the association between the expression of p63 gene isoforms (TA and DeltaN) and salivary gland tumorigenesis, we performed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis of these markers in 71 benign and malignant salivary gland neoplasms.
  • TAp63 was highly expressed in most benign tumors and was either negative or weakly positive in most carcinomas.
  • Conversely, DeltaNp63 was negative or faintly positive in most benign neoplasms and was highly expressed in adenoid cystic, mucoepidermoid, and myoepithelial carcinomas.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis using anti-full-length p63 protein showed ubiquitous nuclear staining in basal and myoepithelial cells in both benign and malignant neoplasms.
  • JAG1 was expressed in most benign and malignant tumors and did not correlate with p63 isoforms expression.
  • We conclude that (1) p63 isoforms are differentially expressed in most benign and malignant tumors and may play distinct biological roles in certain salivary gland neoplasms;.

  • PURPOSE: We investigated the methylation status and protein expression of four tumor suppressor genes to determine their role in salivary gland tumorigenesis.
  • EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We performed methylation-specific PCR and protein analyses of 29 normal salivary glands, 23 benign, and 79 malignant salivary gland neoplasms to determine the pattern and potential diagnostic and/or biological role of the RASSF1, RARbeta2, DAPK, and MGMT tumor suppressor gene methylation in these tumors.
  • Methylation occurred in 9 of 23 (39.1%) benign tumors; 3 (25.0%) pleomorphic adenomas and 6 (66.7%) Warthin's tumors at the MGMT, DAPK, or RASSF1 genes.
  • Methylation occurred in 33 of 79 (41.8%) malignant tumors; 8 (30.8%) adenoid cystic carcinomas, 6 (33.3%) mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 6 (42.9%) acinic cell carcinomas, and 13 (62.0%) salivary duct carcinomas.

  • Examination by fine needle aspiration cytology raised suspicion of mucoepidermoid or adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland and an excision was recommended.
  • The lateral parotidectomy specimen showed a poorly circumscribed gelatinous tumor measuring 15 mm in diameter within the parotid gland tissue.
  • Microscopically, the lesion featured large pools of mucin containing clusters of tumor cells with little atypia and low mitotic activity.
  • Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells showed expression of epithelial markers and of both estrogen and progesterone receptors.
  • Left lateral neck dissection revealed massive lymphogenous dissemination of the tumor.
  • Retrospective analysis of a skin biopsy from the same anatomic area performed 8 years prior to parotid neoplasm displayed a tumor with identical microscopic appearance and immunohistochemical profile (additionally performed) which was, however, misdiagnosed as a benign lesion.
  • The differential diagnostics of this rare tumor is discussed.

  • RESULTS: Of a total of 309 neoplasms of salivary gland origin, 92 were from the intra-oral minor salivary glands constituting 4.5% of head and neck neoplasm.
  • Fifty-seven (62%) cases were malignant, while 35 (38%) were benign.
  • The most frequently diagnosed tumour was adenoid cystic carcinoma 35(38%), followed by pleomorphic adenoma 30(32.6%).
  • Patients with malignant neoplasms were about 10 years older than those with benign tumours (p=0.012).

  • RESULTS: The FNAC diagnostic failure (2); non-neoplastic lesions (12); benign neoplasm (82) and malignant neoplasm (17).
  • Cytologically, the distinction between cellular pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and basal cell adenoma could be difficult due to their overlapping morphologic features.
  • The three inaccurately diagnosed cases of FNAC are, as follows: reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of lymph node mistaken as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma diagnosed as "scanty atypical cells present" and primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma mistaken as benign lymphoepithelial lesion.
  • On the basis of FNAC, 97.4% (110 /113) were correctly depicted as benign (95/96; 99.0%) or malignant (15/17; 88.2%).
  • Furthermore, 90.3% (102 /113) (specificity = 91.9%; 102/111) were accurately diagnosed, including 91.7% (88/96) benign lesions (specificity = 92.6% ; 88/95) and 82.4% (14/17) malignant tumors (specificity = 87.5%; 14/16).
  • CONCLUSIONS: FNAC is reliable in distinguishing benign and malignant salivary gland lesions.

  • Pre-operative core needle biopsy is hazardous and may damage facial nerve, lead to fistula formation or associated with tumour seeding.
  • Among these 3 cases, 2 were adenoid cystic carcinoma which was cytologically diagnosed as benign neoplasm (monomorphic adenoma).
  • One case of Warthin's tumour was cytologically diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma.
  • This study corroborates well with other studies including immunohistochemical findings. p53 expression was found to be related with nature of the neoplasm.

  • Benign tumours account for 80% of case histories with a relationship 1:4 M/F, the most frequent being pleomorphic adenoma (57.3% of cases), followed by Warthin's tumour (32.4%), this rating not having been confirmed in case histories (8-10%) in the literature.
  • Adenoid-cystic carcinoma was observed in 15.3% and < or = 10% for all the other most frequent histological malignant neoplasms.
  • Surgical treatment of benign tumours consisted, in 50% of cases, in superficial paroditectomy and in approximately 30% of total paroditectomy.
  • When no clinically evident lymph nodes were present (NO) considering the tumour histotype, two thirds of patients underwent surgery or radiotherapy, while in the remainder the wait-and-see attitude was prefered.
  • Oncological results obtained were compared with those reported in the literature: in fact for all benign neoplasms relapse ratings are about 5%, while for malignant tumours the worst prognosis was in squamous cell carcinoma with median of 37.7 on survival and metastasis rate of 16.5%.
  • Finally, mucoepidermoid carcinoma tumours showed best survival, followed by adenoid-cystic carcinoma with ranges, respectively, 83 and 81.

  • This study on 279 tumours of the salivary glands was conducted to analyse whether the assessment of DNA ploidy by flow cytometry may assist histopathology in discriminating benign from malignant types of tumours.
  • The group of benign tumours included 164 pleomorphic adenomas, 51 Warthin's tumours, 7 basal cell adenomas, 2 lipomas as well as 5 other different tumours.
  • All of the 229 benign tumours were diploid.

  • METHODS: The protein expression of topoIIalpha was evaluated immunohistochemically in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from 54 salivary gland carcinomas and 20 benign tumors (10 pleomorphic adenomas and 10 Warthin's tumors).
  • The primary salivary gland carcinoma specimens consisted of 17 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 7 adenocarcinomas not otherwise specified, 7 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 6 salivary duct carcinomas, 3 acinic cell carcinomas, 3 carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenomas, 3 epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas, 2 carcinosarcomas, 2 lymphoepithelial carcinomas, 2 myoepithelial carcinomas, 1 oncocytic carcinoma, and 1 squamous cell carcinoma.
  • RESULTS: Of the 54 primary salivary gland carcinomas, 38 (70%) showed positive expression (> or = 10%) of topoIIalpha protein, and 16 carcinomas (30%) and all benign tumors were negative (p < 0.001).
  • Expression of topoIIalpha was more frequently observed in salivary duct carcinoma, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, adenocarcinoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma, solid type, and it was associated with advanced stage and shortened survival.

  • We performed immunohistochemical assessment of p53 expression and TP53 mutational analysis of 15 malignant neoplasms arising from preexisting benign cylindroma, spiradenoma, and spiradenocylindroma, sporadic or associated with Brooke-Spiegler syndrome.
  • None of the 12 benign control group cases harbored a TP53 mutation, whereas all 12 demonstrated single nucleotide polymorphisms identical to those detected in the malignant tumor group.
  • In conclusion, we found a fairly high rate of p53 expression in malignant neoplasms arising from preexisting benign spiradenomas, cylindromas, and spiradenocylindromas.
  • Whereas immunostaining for p53 has been suggested as an adjunct tool to differentiate benign spiradenoma, cylindroma, and spiradenocylindroma from their malignant counterparts, its utility is limited by its heterogeneous pattern of expression, especially the sometimes lack of staining in clearly malignant areas and the occurrence of focal, weak positivity in the benign residua or in unequivocally benign neoplasms.

  • BACKGROUND: Warthin's tumor is a common benign neoplasm of the salivary gland.
  • RESULTS: HHV-8 DNA was detected in 19 out of 43 (44%) salivary gland tumor samples.
  • Among the 15 cases with paired samples, 9 were HHV-8-positive for both samples, 4 were HHV-8-negative for both samples while in two cases HHV-8 was detected only in the tumor specimens.
  • CONCLUSIONS: HHV-8 is frequently detected in adenoid salivary neoplasms, suggesting a significant role of the virus in the etiopathogenesis of the disease.

  • We performed immunohistochemistry to examine MK expression in specimens of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), and pleomorphic adenoma (PA).
  • Immunohistochemistry showed that MK protein expression was significantly higher in specimens of malignant SGTs (ACC [P<0.01] and MEC [P<0.001]) than in benign SGT (PA) samples.

  • In 28/29 cases, slides were reviewed and 24 (86%) cases showed more than 1 pattern: adenoid cysticlike (AC-P) pattern and small solid nests with peripheral palisading were the most predominant patterns, each seen in 18 cases (64%).

  • METHODS: We reviewed the present knowledge of bronchial gland tumors of the trachea, carina, and bronchi, including the epidemiology, presentation, evaluation, tumor types, and treatment options.
  • RESULTS: The malignant bronchial gland tumors, adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma, are far more common than benign mucinous cystadenoma or pleomorphic adenoma.
  • Complete resection of localized tumors has excellent long-term results in symptomatic benign tumors.

  • Ceruminal glands are modified sweat glands of the skin of the external auditory meatus that may give rise to (a) benign tumors such as ceruminous adenoma, pleomorphic adenoma, and syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and (b) malignant tumors such as ceruminous adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
  • These tumors are very rare and usually have a benign course.
  • The patient underwent modified radical mastoidectomy and complete resection of the tumor and the entire skin of the external auditory canal.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Pleomorphic adenoma is an extremely rare tumor arising from the ceruminal glands of the external ear canal.
  • Nonspecific presentation and difficult histologic diagnosis characterize this benign neoplasm.

  • PATIENTS: All patients undergoing revision surgery for benign and malignant lateral skull base tumors.
  • Thirty-three operations were for benign lesions, 27 of which were glomus tumors.
  • Fifty-eight percent of patients had preoperative cranial nerve deficits (66% of benign tumors and 14% of malignancies).
  • There was one recurrent adenoid cystic tumor resulting in death and two partially resected glomus tumors.

  • VEGF, a potent endothelial cell mitogen and vascular permeability-inducing agent, plays a critical role in tumor growth and neo-vascularisation.
  • VEGF expression was assessed in 103 NPC and 26 benign adenoid lesions by immunohistochemistry and Epstein Bar Virus (EBV) presence by PCR using primers directed against EBNA-1 gene.
  • The localization of the virus to the tumour cells was confirmed by in situ hybridization using EBER in situ hybridization.
  • The results point towards the potential of the expression pattern of VEGF as a tumor marker for the early diagnosis of metastastic NPC and also show that presence of EBV is related to up regulation of VEGF.

  • BACKGROUND: Primary tracheal tumors other than adenoid cystic or squamous cell carcinoma are uncommon and have a heterogeneous histologic appearance.
  • METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of uncommon tracheal tumors among 360 primary tracheal tumors seen over 40 years, excluding adenoid cystic and squamous cell carcinoma.
  • RESULTS: Of 90 patients, 34 (38%) had benign tumors and 56 malignant: 11 carcinoid tumors, 14 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 13 sarcomas, 15 nonsquamous bronchogenic carcinomas, 2 lymphomas, and 1 melanoma.
  • Dyspnea was the most common symptom in benign tumors and hemoptysis in malignant tumors.
  • After resection, survival at 10 years was 94% for benign and 83% for carcinoid tumors, and at 5 years survival was 60% for bronchogenic carcinoma, 100% for mucoepidermoid tumors, and 78% for sarcomas.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Surgical resection of uncommon primary tracheal tumors alleviates airway obstruction, is curative in patients with benign or slow-growing malignant lesions, and prolongs survival in highly malignant lesions.
