  • This tumor is more common in major salivary glands.
  • This case report describes a rare and unusual lesion in a 55-year-old female, which was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma of the minor salivary glands in the upper lip.
  • The tumor was a circumscribed, submucosal nodule, about 2.0 cm in diameter and was characterized by slow growth and rubbery consistency.
  • Complete excision was performed and the histopathological analysis showed an epithelial salivary gland tumor with islands of plasmacytoid cells, duct like structures, in a variable stroma with chondroid, fibrous and myxoid appearance.

  • [Title] Surgical management of minor salivary gland neoplasms of the palate.
  • OBJECTIVE: Minor salivary gland tumors are uncommon, accounting for up to 15% of salivary gland neoplasms.
  • We describe our experience with both benign and malignant tumors of the palatal minor salivary glands, focusing on the extent of resection and options for defect reconstruction.
  • RESULTS: From 1994 to 2002, 37 patients with primary neoplasms originating in the palatal minor salivary glands were treated at a single institution.
  • Twenty-four percent of the lesions were benign.
  • The most common malignant tumor encountered was low grade polymorphous adenocarcinoma, followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • The extent of surgical resection was dictated by tumor pathology and evidence of perineural spread, and defects were reconstructed with a variety of techniques.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Neoplasms of the minor salivary glands in the palate may be excised, with limits dictated by tumor histopathology and perineural invasion.

  • Clinically, it manifests as a slow growing tumor, fluctuant on palpation due to its cystic morphology.
  • The treatment of choice is complete excision with wide tumor-free margins.
  • We present a 73-year-old female patient with an asymptomatic tumor of 8 years evolution in the right posterior area of the hard palate.
  • The lesion was re-operated, performing the excision with CO2 laser and including the periosteum to ensure complete resection of the tumor.

  • AIMS: Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare malignant salivary gland neoplasm that most commonly occurs in the parotid gland, but can also arise in the minor salivary glands.
  • Three cases are reported of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the minor salivary glands, with the goal of better defining this entity.
  • All parts of each tumor were surrounded by a myoepithelial cell rim and there was evidence of invasion.
  • RESULTS: Immunohistochemical analysis showed the tumor cells to be weakly positive for S100, cytokeratin (CK) CK5/6, CK7, CKAE-1/AE-3 and strongly positive for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) and p63; they were focally positive for calponin and acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen (CD10).
  • The tumor cells were negative for vimentin, alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA) (except one case), glial fibrillar acid protein (GFAP) and MIB1.
  • CONCLUSION: Three cases of minor salivary gland tumors are described and the differential diagnosis underlined in relation to benign myoepithelioma.

  • This tumor was formerly considered to be a subtype of pleomorphic adenoma; however, in the latest World Health Organization classification of 1991 it is listed as an independent entity.
  • CT and MRI revealed a 50 x 40 mm(2) well-defined ovoid tumor.
  • A benign minor salivary gland tumor was clinically suspected, and the patient underwent complete resection of the tumor under general anesthesia.
  • The tumor was histopathologically diagnosed as a benign myoepithelioma of the minor salivary gland.
  • Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for vimentin, cytokeratins, alpha-smooth muscle actin and S-100 protein, confirming the morphological diagnosis of myoepithelioma.

  • INTRODUCTION: Minor salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) are infrequent, representing 10-15% of all salivary neoplasms.
  • The data collected comprised patient age and sex, the clinical characteristics and location of the tumor, the duration of the lesion, its size, the treatment provided, and the histopathological findings.
  • The great majority (94.4%) were benign tumors.
  • The histopathological diagnoses of our MSGTs comprised 10 pleomorphic adenomas (55.3%), 2 cystadenomas (11.1%), 1 myoepithelioma (5.6%), 1 sialadenoma papilliferum (5.6%), 1 basal cell adenoma (5.6%), 1 Warthin's tumor (5.6%), 1 canalicular adenoma (5.6%), and 1 low-grade polymorphic adenocarcinoma (5.6%).
  • Six percent of all benign minor salivary gland tumors are considered to relapse, versus 65% of all malignant lesions.

  • BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Salivary gland tumors are rare and specific lesions.
  • There are differences in the incidence and frequency of salivary tumors in both minor and major salivary glands in different countries.
  • This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of major and minor salivary gland tumors in Ahvaz in the south of Iran.
  • RESULTS: Of 112 cases, 84 cases were benign and 28 cases were malignant.
  • The incidence of malignant salivary gland tumors increased with age and male predominance was found in malignant tumors.
  • The majority of the tumors occurred in parotid gland.
  • CONCLUSION: It was shown that the peak incidence age of all salivary gland tumors was the third to fifth decades, and malignant tumors mostly occurred in the sixth to eighth decades.

  • Sialolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm characterized by a well-circumscribed mass composed of neoplastic mature adipose tissue and non-neoplastic salivary gland elements.
  • Microscopically, the tumor was well-circumscribed consisting of lobular proliferation of the lipomatous tissue with thin fibrous tissue septa containing clustered salivary gland elements.
  • Of these 35 cases, 16 cases were located in minor salivary glands.
  • The age distribution was from 27 to 84 years (mean, 61.6 years) and the tumor size ranged from 0.9 to 4 cm (mean, 1.7 cm).

  • Petraki et al have previously described presence of hK13 in salivary gland tissue, localized to duct epithelia and some acinar cells.
  • The aim of this study was to determine whether hK13 is expressed in salivary gland tissues and salivary gland tumors (both benign and malignant), in order to compare normal with tumor tissues.
  • Pleomorphic adenomas (PA), adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC), polymorphous low grade adenocarcinomas (PLGA), acinic cell carcinomas (ACI), mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC) and adenocarcinomas not otherwise specified (ANOS) of both minor and major salivary glands were examined.
  • The results of this study indicate that most salivary gland tumors show high levels of expression of hK13.
  • Overall, staining in PA was significantly less than that seen in normal salivary gland tissue.
  • PLGA, ACC and ANOS each stained significantly more than normal salivary gland tissue while MEC and ACI did not.
  • In conclusion, we demonstrate the high expression of hK13 in several common salivary gland tumors.

  • PURPOSE: Minor salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms with great histomorphologic variation.
  • This study reviews a large series of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors of the oral region and determines the incidence and the correlation of the histopathologic features with the clinical characteristics.
  • RESULTS: One hundred nineteen tumors were benign (56%), and 94 tumors were malignant (44%).
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor (93 of 119).
  • Canalicular adenoma was the second most common benign MSGT in our series (25 of 119).
  • CONCLUSIONS: Benign intraoral MSGTs are slightly more common than malignant MSGTs.
  • The palate is the most common site for minor gland neoplasms.
  • Benign labial salivary gland neoplasms are more common in the upper lip, and malignant labial tumors are more common in the lower lip.

  • [Title] [Surgical management of minor salivary gland tumors].
  • OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features of minor salivary gland tumors and to discuss the treatment modalities for these tumors.
  • METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 54 cases with minor salivary gland tumor operated in our hospital from 1997 to 2004.
  • RESULT: Among 54 cases with minor salivary gland tumors in this series, 16 patients lost of follow up.
  • Among the remaining 38 patients, 2 patients with nasal cavity adenoid cystic carcinoma died of tumor recurrence 2 and 3 years after the surgery respectively, one patient with laryngeal myoepithelial carcinoma died of tumor recurrence 3 years after the surgery and one patient with paranasal sinus mucoepidermoid carcinoma died of recurrence 17 months after the surgery.
  • Two patients with paranasal sinus adenoid cystic carcinoma recurred after the primary surgery and were survived without tumor after salvage surgery.
  • The other patients survived with no tumor recurrence.
  • CONCLUSION: While different histopathology of minor salivary gland tumors were found in this group, malignant tumors were predominant, accounting for 81.4%.
  • The choice of treatment for minor salivary gland tumors depends upon the location and the histopathology of the tumors.
  • The treatment policy for benign tumors is simple tumor excision, while that for malignant tumors is surgery combined with pre- or post-operative radiation therapy.
  • Complete surgical resection of tumor masses and tumor free margin is essential for successful treatment of malignant minor salivary gland tumors.

  • In the present study we analysed the expression of this molecule in salivary gland tumours.
  • Archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of 40 benign and 57 malignant salivary gland tumours were retrieved and retrospectively studied immunohistochemically using a polyclonal C-KIT antibody in an Envision/HRP technique.
  • In addition five samples of chronic submandibular sialadenitis, five normal minor salivary glands and parotid or submandibular gland tissue adjacent to benign tumour were also studied.
  • C-KIT expression was observed in cases of adenoid cystic, acinic cell polymorphous low grade, epithelial-myoepithelial, carcinosarcoma and basal cell adenocarcinomas, as in luminal cells of pleomorphic adenomas, in serous acinar and only in intercalated and a small number of striated ductal cells of inflammatory salivary gland tissue, whereas normal salivary lobules were generally negative except a weak positivity of intercalated cells.
  • Contrary to other reports, this study suggests that, C-KIT protein does not appear to be an exclusively specific marker for benign or malignant salivary gland neoplasms, but may be useful in differential diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma from polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma.
  • Furthermore its expression in serous acinar cells in sialadenitis and intercalated ductal cells in normal and inflammatory lesions may indicate a possible participation in pathogenesis of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic salivary gland diseases.

  • Minor salivary gland carcinomas are uncommon but most often occur in the oral cavity, particularly the hard palate.
  • During the period of 1977-2000 a group of 75 patients (31 males and 44 females, median age 44.2 years and range 15-86 years) with minor salivary gland tumors were diagnosed, based on the 1991 WHO classification.
  • The frequency of benign tumors was 38.6% (n = 29) and malignant tumors 61.3% (n = 46).
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common histological type of benign tumor identified whereas mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the most common malignant tumors.
  • A benign tumor usually presented as an asymptomatic swelling and ulceration, pain being more frequently associated with the malignant tumors.
  • This study shows that intraoral tumors of minor salivary glands vary widely in presentation, and should be taking into account by medical and dental practitioners in any differential diagnosis when assessing intraoral pathology.
  • Any lesion arising from the hard palate (the most common site in this series) should be considered as a possible minor salivary gland tumor.

  • This review summarizes the new findings on salivary gland pathology under the following categories: immunohistochemistry; molecular genetics; newly recognized tumour types; known tumour entities with new findings; and progression of salivary gland tumours.
  • In the application of immunohistochemistry, CD117 can aid in highlighting the luminal cell component of various salivary gland tumours, whereas p63 or maspin can aid in highlighting the abluminal cell component.
  • A high Ki67 index remains the most useful marker to predict adverse outcome in salivary gland carcinoma.
  • Newly recognized entities include: sclerosing polycystic adenosis (with recent molecular evidence supporting its neoplastic nature), sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia, keratocystoma, adenoma with additional stromal component (lymphadenoma, lipoadenoma and adenofibroma), cribriform adenocarcinoma of the tongue and signet ring adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland.
  • Known tumour entities with new findings include: salivary duct carcinoma (with newly recognized mucinous, micropapillary and sarcomatoid variants), intraductal carcinoma (with controversies in terminology), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (with newly proposed grading parameters and oncocytic variant), epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (with newly recognized morphological variants), small cell carcinoma (with most cases being related to Merkel cell carcinoma), extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (with specific chromosomal translocation) and chronic sclerosing sialadenitis (being a component of IgG4-related sclerosing disease).
  • Progression of salivary gland tumours can take the form of malignant transformation of a benign tumour, progression from low-grade to high-grade carcinoma, dedifferentiation, or stromal invasion of an in situ carcinoma.

  • Salivary gland neoplasms account for <3% of all tumors.
  • Most of them are benign and parotid gland is the commonest site.
  • As a general rule, the smaller the involved salivary gland, the higher is the possibility of the tumor being malignant.
  • The role of imaging in assessment of salivary gland tumour is to define intra-glandular vs. extra-glandular location, detect malignant features, assess local extension and invasion, detect nodal metastases and systemic involvement.
  • For lesions in the superficial parotid and submandibular gland, ultrasound is an ideal tool for initial assessment.
  • If deep tissue extension is suspected or malignancy confirmed on cytology, an MRI or CT is mandatory to evaluate tumour extent, local invasion and perineural spread.
  • For all tumours in the sublingual gland, MRI should be performed as the risk of malignancy is high.
  • For lesions of the deep lobe of parotid gland and the minor salivary glands, MRI and CT are the modalities of choice.
  • Ultrasound has limited visualization of the deep lobe of parotid gland which is obscured by the mandible.
  • Minor salivary gland lesions in the mucosa of oral cavity, pharynx and tracheo-bronchial tree, are also not accessible by conventional ultrasound.
  • Recent study suggests that MR spectroscopy may differentiate malignant and benign salivary gland tumours as well as distinguishing Warthin's tumor from pleomorphic adenoma.
  • Sialography is used to delineate the salivary ductal system and has limited role in assessment of tumour extent.

  • Salivary gland tumors consist of a group of heterogeneous lesions with complex clinicopathological characteristics and distinct biological behaviors.
  • Worldwide series show a contrast in the relative incidence of salivary gland tumors, with some discrepancies in clinicopathological data.
  • Benign tumors represented 78.3% of the cases.
  • Parotid gland tumors were the most frequent (68.5% of cases) and patient age ranged from 1 to 88 years-old (median of 45 years old).
  • The most frequent tumors were pleomorphic adenomas (68.4%) and benign tumors were significantly more frequent in the parotid (75.9%), while malignant tumors were more frequent in the minor salivary glands (40%) (P < 0.05).
  • In conclusion, women and the parotid gland were the most affected and pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent lesion, followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma and Warthin's tumor.

  • Petraki et al have previously described presence of hK13 in salivary gland tissue, localized to duct epithelia and some acinar cells.
  • The aim of this study was to determine whether hK13 is expressed in salivary gland tissues and salivary gland tumors (both benign and malignant), in order to compare normal with tumor tissues.
  • Pleomorphic adenomas (PA), adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC), polymorphous low grade adenocarcinomas (PLGA), acinic cell carcinomas (ACI), mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC) and adenocarcinomas not otherwise specified (ANOS) of both minor and major salivary glands were examined.
  • The results of this study indicate that most salivary gland tumors show high levels of expression of hK13.
  • Overall, staining in PA was significantly less than that seen in normal salivary gland tissue.
  • PLGA, ACC and ANOS each stained significantly more than normal salivary gland tissue while MEC and ACI did not.
  • In conclusion, we demonstrate the high expression of hK13 in several common salivary gland tumors.

  • Myoepitheliomas of the salivary glands are rare benign tumors composed of spindle-shaped myoepithelial cells, but may show plasmacytoid, epitheloid and clear cell-types that principally exhibit myoepithelial but not ductal differentiation.
  • These tumors are mainly located in the major salivary glands and have sometimes abundant, acellular, mucoid or hyaline stroma but lack chondroid and myxochondroid foci, probably representing the one end of the spectrum of pleomorphic adenoma.
  • Lipomatosis in the form of isolated small islands or scattered single lipocytes, is quite uncommon, and a large amount of adipose tissue in a pleomorphic adenoma and myoepithelioma is a rarity and only described in major salivary glands.
  • We present the case report of a 38-year old man with a myoepithelioma of the minor palatinal salivary glands with extensive lipomatosis as an example of this rare phenomena.

  • The human kallikrein 8 protein (KLK8) is expressed in many normal tissues including esophagus, skin, testis, tonsil, kidney, breast, and salivary gland, and is found in biological fluids including breast milk, amniotic fluid, seminal fluid and serum.
  • The aim of this study was to determine whether KLK8 is expressed in salivary gland tissues and salivary gland tumors (both benign and malignant), in order to compare normal with tumor tissues.
  • Pleomorphic adenomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, polymorphous low grade adenocarcinomas, acinic cell carcinomas, mucoepidermoid carcinomas, and adenocarcinomas NOS of both minor and major salivary glands were examined.

  • BACKGROUND: The benign tumors of nasopharynx are least encountered tumors in otolaryngology, as nasopharynx is considered one of notorious anatomical site for the malignant tumors.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma of the minor salivary gland of nasopharynx and parapharyngeal space is rare.
  • We present a pleomorphic adenoma of minor salivary gland which was mismanaged.
  • On CT scan, this tumor was quite big and extending to the parapharyngeal space.
  • The excision biopsy of tumor revealed it as pleomorphic adenoma.
  • We found only five published reports on this tumor arising from nasopharynx.
  • DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Although, in this case report exact origin of the tumor could not be ascertained as it also appeared to be a parapharyngeal tumor but we kept the possibility of a nasopharyngeal tumor on the basis of clinical features.
  • It can be misdiagnosed as malignant epithelial tumor on histopathology.
  • A possibility of benign tumor should always be kept in nasopharyngeal growth with no evidence of metastasis, and histopathological diagnosis of growth should be available before any definitive treatment.

  • BACKGROUND: The knowledge of the distribution and pattern of salivary gland tumors in the tertiary care center can provide overview of the disease pattern in the region.
  • METHODS: A retrospective observational study of all the salivary gland tumors treated in the department of Otolaryngology, B. P.
  • Age, sex, presenting features, radiological findings, histopathological type of the tumor and type of surgery were recorded and descriptive analysis was done to calculate frequencies, percentage and their relations.
  • RESULTS: Out of total 51 cases, 81% (n=41) were benign and 19% (n=10) malignant tumors.
  • Mean age for benign and malignant tumors were 32.3 and 46.5 years respectively.
  • Parotid tumor outnumbered all other sites comprising 69%, followed by submandiibular 18% and minor glands 13%.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the commonest tumor (76%) of all primary salivary gland tumors.
  • Benign to malignant tumor ratio of parotid, submandibular and minor glands were 6:1, 3.5:1 and 1.3:1 respectively.
  • CONCLUSIONS: The principal site for salivary gland tumors in eastern Nepal population was the parotid and the pleomorphic adenoma outnumbered all other tumors.
  • Most of the cases in both benign and malignant group presented with painless lump often misleading the gravity of disease.

  • BACKGROUND: There have been several epidemiologic studies on intra-oral salivary gland tumors in several countries, but little is known of these tumors in Thailand.
  • OBJECTIVES: To determine the relative frequency and distribution of various types of intra-oral salivary gland tumors in the Thai population.
  • METHODS: The files of the Department of Oral Pathology, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, from 1969 to 2007 were searched for intra-oral salivary gland tumors.
  • RESULTS: Of the 16,358 accessioned cases, 311 cases (1.90%) were diagnosed as intra-oral salivary gland tumors.
  • One hundred and forty-seven cases (47.27%) were benign tumors, while 164 cases (52.73%) were malignant tumors.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common intra-oral salivary gland tumor.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common intra-oral salivary gland tumor and the most common benign intra-oral salivary gland tumor, while mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant intra-oral salivary gland tumor.
  • Intra-oral salivary gland tumors in Thailand elicit similar trend as in previous studies, with only minor differences such as the ranking of some tumors, the higher incidence of intra-bony location, and the lower incidence of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma.

  • PURPOSE: Tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon, comprising 3% to 10% of head and neck neoplasia.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records and case notes of all patients with histologically confirmed salivary gland tumors were reviewed retrospectively from February 1984 to March 2003.
  • This review found 89 patients with benign tumors and 41 patients with malignant tumors.
  • The collection of data included gender, age, location, and histopathology of the tumor.
  • Patients with benign and malignant tumors presented with a mean age of 41.3 and 47 years, respectively.
  • The frequency of benign tumors was 68.4% (n = 89) and 31.6% for malignant tumors (n = 41).
  • Tumors were localized in the parotid gland (63%; n = 82), the submandibular gland (23%; n = 30), and in the minor salivary glands (14%; n = 18).
  • The most common benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma (65.4%; n = 85).
  • CONCLUSION: Between benign and malignant salivary gland tumors, frequency of pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was in keeping with studies reported previously.
  • In other salivary gland tumors, however, diversity was obvious and showed significant difference, requiring further studies.

  • In this study, 496 epithelial and mesenchymal tumors of major and minor salivary glands diagnosed at Londrina Cancer Institute during the period from 1972 to 2001 were reviewed.
  • Out of all cases, 335 (67.5%) were classified as benign and 161 (32.5%) as malignant.
  • The majority of the cases occurred in the parotid gland (67.7%), followed by the minor salivary glands (22.8%) and submandibular gland (9.5%).

  • Human kallikrein 3 (hK3; prostate-specific antigen) is the most useful marker for adenocarcinoma of the prostate gland.
  • The aim of this study was to determine whether hK3 and hK5 are expressed in salivary gland tissues and salivary gland tumors (both benign and malignant), in order to compare normal with tumor tissues.

  • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the types and distribution of tumors of salivary glands in north Jordanians.
  • STUDY DESIGN: The records of the Department of Pathology at Jordan University of Science and Technology were reviewed for patients who were treated for salivary gland tumors from 1991 to 2002.
  • The tumors were analyzed for age of patient, sex of patient, tumor site, and tumor type.
  • RESULTS: One hundred two true neoplasms (70% benign and 30% malignant) were found.
  • The most frequent benign and malignant neoplasms found were pleomorphic adenoma (54%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (13%), respectively.
  • The most common major and minor salivary gland sites were the parotid (51%) and palatal glands (20%), respectively.
  • Although most of major gland tumors were adenomas, carcinomas of the minor glands were only slightly less frequent than adenomas.
  • The most frequent minor salivary gland malignant tumors were palatal adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • CONCLUSION: North Jordanians with salivary gland tumors were found to have similar characteristics with patients of other countries with regard to tumor type, tumor site distribution, and age and sex of patients.

  • OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic data to determine the distribution of epithelial salivary tumors, especially minor salivary tumors, in Sri Lanka.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 713 salivary tumors diagnosed at the Department of Oral Pathology, during the period from 1990 to 2007 were reviewed.
  • RESULTS: Out of the 713 epithelial salivary tumors, 356 (49.9%) were classified as benign and 357 (50.1%) as malignant, indicating a benign-to-malignant ratio of 1:1.
  • The majority of both benign (29%) and malignant (39%) tumors occurred in the minor salivary glands.
  • Malignant tumors were slightly more common in minor salivary glands, indicating a benign-to-malignant ratio of 1:0.75.
  • Among the minor salivary sites, palate was the most frequent location, accounting for 51% of the tumors (246 out of 486).
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent tumor, representing 38% of all tumors (274 out of 713), followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma 21.6% (154 out of 713) and adenoid cystic carcinoma 13.5% (96 out of 713).
  • The commonest benign and malignant tumors were pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma in both major and minor salivary glands.
  • CONCLUSION: According to the findings of this study, equal frequencies of benign and malignant tumors indicate higher occurrences of malignancies, especially in the minor salivary glands, in the Sri Lankan population.

  • STUDY DESIGN: The histological diagnosis records of the Department of Pathology at Cumhuriyet University were reevaluated for 125 patients who were treated for salivary gland tumors from 1987 to 2008.
  • RESULTS: A total of 125 primary salivary gland neoplasms, consisting of 95 (76%) benign and 30 (24%) malignant groups were recorded.
  • The most common major and minor salivary gland sites were the parotid (61.6%) and palatal glands (9.6%), respectively.
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent benign tumor followed by Warthin's tumor.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Although there were some discrepancies, the characteristics of salivary gland tumors of Turkish patients are in line with those of patients from other countries according to tumor type, tumor site distribution, and age and sex of patients.

  • Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign epithelial tumor of the salivary gland.
  • BCA is seen most frequently in the parotid gland and less commonly in the submandibular gland and minor glands of the upper lips, oral cavity, and hard palate.
  • Salivary gland tumors are observed as single tumors in one salivary gland.
  • Double or multiple tumors of the salivary gland tumors are unusual and metachronous or bilateral salivary gland tumors are more observed than synchronous or unilateral tumors.
  • The most commonly seen multiple tumor unilaterally or bilaterally is the Warthin's tumor.
  • Physical examination revealed two solid and well-delineated masses in the preauricular region, which were 1.5 x 1 cm in diameter and in the tail of the parotid gland, which is 2.5 x 2 cm in diameter.
  • Excision of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland was performed.
  • Multiple synchronous nonmembranous-type BCAs of the unilateral parotid gland is a rare entity.
  • More extensive excision of the parotid gland tumor, careful macroscopic perioperative examination of the surgical specimen, and histologic evaluation of all surgical specimens might be necessary for reducing revision operations and surgical complications.

  • We report a series of three cases of pleomorphic adenoma with extensive lipometaplasia, a recently described subtype of pleomorphic adenoma of salivary gland origin.
  • Two occurred in the minor salivary glands of the lip and palate, respectively, and one in the parotid.
  • The differential diagnosis, as it pertains to other fat-containing tumors (such as lipoadenoma, spindle cell lipoma, interstitial lipomatosis, and benign mesenchymoma), is discussed.
  • It is likely that the ability of myoepithelial cells to undergo various metaplasias is the cause of the unusual histologic appearances of this tumor.

  • Majority of treated tumors were pleomorphic adenomas (14 minor salivary gland and 7 deep lobe parotid gland tumors).
  • Two cases of malignant salivary gland tumors, 4 nerve sheath tumors and 1 lymphangioma were also excised.
  • Mean tumor size was 6.1 cm (range 2-11 cm).
  • It can be combined with external approach to achieve safe resection of some benign tumors which would need transmandibular approach.

  • OBJECTIVES: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor of the major salivary glands, especially of the parotid gland.
  • It is much less common in the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity, and it rarely occurs in others sites in the head and neck.
  • Even if virus involvement in salivary glands tumor has been many times discuted, the etiology of this tumor keeps being unknown.
  • All the patients had undergone endoscopic surgery to remove the complete tumor.
  • RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: We had positive EBV-DNA detection in the tumor in one case, which seemed to prove relationship between pleomorphic adenoma and this virus.

  • BACKGROUND: Myoepithelioma is a rare benign salivary gland tumour, localized most frequently in the parotid and in minor intraoral salivary glands.
  • Tumour cells were positive for cytokeratins, vimentin and S-100 protein.
  • Surgical resection was performed and no evidences of tumour recurrence were observed after 6 years of the treatment.
  • CONCLUSION: Myoepithelioma is a very rare tumour in children and apparently presents a good prognosis, similar to occur in adult patients.
