  • The degree of urothelial differentiation in putative transitional (urothelial) proliferations in the female genital tract is still controversial.
  • To further investigate the similarities (or dissimilarities) between female genital tract transitional proliferations and bladder urothelium, we evaluated the expression of S100P and GATA3, 2 proteins that we previously found to be strongly expressed in bladder urothelial tumors, in 25 benign ovarian Brenner tumors, 19 Walthard cell nests (17 tubal and 2 ovarian hilus), 1 mature teratoma with a benign urothelial proliferation, 2 proliferating (borderline) ovarian Brenner tumors, 1 malignant Brenner tumor, and 12 ovarian transitional cell carcinomas (TCC).
  • The teratoma-associated benign urothelial proliferation was also negative for S100P, but positive for GATA3 and p63.

  • The present study was designed to test whether it is also synthesized by benign neoplastic cells, namely uterine leiomyomas.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: We determined the activity of CP in the blood serum of women with uterine leiomyomas (N = 24), normal women (N = 15), and genital cancer patients (N = 6) by the coagulative method according to Gordon and Benson.
  • RESULTS: The mean CP activity in the sera of women with uterine leiomyomas was 181.1 seconds (s) +/- 19.9 s, in healthy women--293.2 s +/- 33.8 s, and in genital cancer patients--78.8 +/- 18.5 s (all differences: p < 0.001).
  • The coagulation time of 120 to 240 s by the Gordon and Benson method supported the diagnosis of uterine leiomyoma, and a value below 120 s--the suspicion of genital cancer.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Uterine leiomyomas, representing benign genital neoplasia, synthesize CP and are the likely origin of CP activity in blood, as has been described for malignant tumors, but to a lesser degree.
  • There may be a role for CP as a tumor marker of genital neoplasia.

  • OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound (3DPD) in the differentiation between benign and malignant adnexal masses and evaluate 3DPD for assessing malignancy in comparison with two-dimensional transvaginal gray-scale sonography (2DTVS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET).
  • RESULTS: Of the 36 patients, 25 had a malignancy, 5 had a borderline tumor, and 6 had a benign mass.

  • The finding of such cases, which raises the controversy of whether or not adenofibroma exists as a tumor entity, prompted us to make a comparative immunohistochemical analysis of 23 typical adenosarcomas, 8 adenosarcomas with sarcomatous overgrowth, and 29 benign and malignant related lesions, including 7 clinically benign adenofibromas.
  • Adenosarcomas with sarcomatous overgrowth showed strong immunoreaction for Ki-67 and p53 and loss of CD10 and progesterone receptors immunostaining; in contrast, the immunoreaction for these tumor markers in typical adenosarcomas without sarcomatous overgrowth was similar to that of adenofibromas associated with favorable outcome and other benign lesions such as endometrial polyps and endometriosis.

  • [Title] Human papillomavirus infection and p16(INK4a) protein expression in vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive squamous cell carcinoma.
  • OBJECTIVE: Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) is defined histopathologically by distinctive abnormalities of cellular maturation and differentiation.
  • METHODS: A total of 49 vulvar biopsy samples were examined by hematoxylin-eosin staining from benign/reactive lesions, condyloma acuminatum, VIN, and invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
  • No p16(INK4a) immunoreactivity was observed in any of the benign/reactive and condyloma acuminatum lesions.
  • In addition, none of the benign/reactive or condyloma lesions were positive for HPV type 16 by RT-PCR analysis.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Upregulation of INK4a gene occurs in vulvar carcinogenesis. p16(INK4a) is not a sensitive marker for differentiation of benign vulvar squamous epithelium from condyloma acuminatum or VIN 1 lesions because most VIN 1 lesions are p16(INK4a) negative.

  • Müllerian papilloma is a rare benign tumor of the cervix and/or vagina that occurs predominantly in young children.
  • The cytologic features of benign müllerian papilloma have never been described.
  • We report for the first time, to our knowledge, the cytologic findings of a benign müllerian papilloma from the vaginal fluid specimen of a 15-mo-old girl using touch prep, ThinPrep, and cell block preparations.
  • The deceptive cytologic features of a cellular specimen with complex papillary fronds composed of overlapping and crowded small hyperchromatic cells, with a high nuclear:cytoplasmic ratio, and feathering in this case resembled a malignant neoplasm.
  • The clinical findings and cytomorphology of a benign müllerian papilloma can mimic those of malignant lesions of the female lower genital tract such as sarcoma botryoides and adenocarcinoma.
