  • [Source] The source of this record is MEDLINE®, a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • The most frequent causes of these unexpected deaths were epilepsy, pulmonary embolus, acute hydrocephalus, and acute renal sepsis.
  • Only 17% (7/42) of those born with a high sensory level (above T11) survived to the mean age of 40 years, compared with 61% (23/38) of those with a low sensory level (below L3; p=0.001).
  • INTERPRETATION: Doctors and care planners need to be aware that, contrary to previous suggestions, there is continuing high mortality throughout adult life in individuals with open spina bifida, and many deaths are unexpected.

  • [Source] The source of this record is MEDLINE®, a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • The potential larvicidal activity and insect growth regulator (IGR) properties of three selected indigenous medicinal Thai plants were tested against two species of mosquito with special reference to the late 3rd and early 4th instar larvae (L3 and L4, respectively).
  • A variety of toxic effects were observed and recorded in eight categories according to the stage of metamorphosis when death occurred. P. mirifica rendered the main deleterious effects in the pupa-adult period in both instar of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus, whereas B. superba showed highest effect in black-pupa period of the late 3rd instar larval stage.
  • The results were reversed for the early 4th instar larvae of both species of mosquito as the main effect appeared in the pupa-adult category.
  • In addition, L3 was always more susceptible than L4 with both mosquito species.

  • A biomechanical model of the trunk was used to estimate compressive forces applied to the L3 vertebral body during standing, bending forward, and bending forward while lifting 10 kg.
  • Compressive forces on L3 were greater in men than women, because of their greater body weight and height.

  • Twenty four purpose-bred adult mixed-breed dogs were grouped into three blocks of eight based on weight and sex.
  • On day 364, each dog was inoculated subcutaneously with 50 D. immitis L3.
  • On days 510 and 511, dogs were euthanatized, and their hearts, lungs and thoracic cavities were inspected for the presence of adult heartworms. number, sex and viability of recovered heartworms were determined.
  • We conclude that under conditions pertaining in this study, a single subcutaneous injection of a moxidectin SR formulation at dosing rates of either 0.17 or 0.27 mg/kg b.w. can safely protect adult dogs against experimental challenge inoculation with infective heartworm larvae for a period of 12 months.

  • To generate a source of ELISA antigen by genetic engineering, we created a complementary DNA (cDNA) expression library by the reverse transcription of mRNA of P. tenuis adult worms, and ligation with the vector lambda-ZAP II.
  • The library was screened using antisera produced in mice by immunization with a somatic antigen preparation of adult worms.
  • An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay utilizing the API fusion protein as the coating antigen was used to serologically diagnose all white-tailed deer (WTD, 10 out of 10) that had been inoculated with 6 - 150 L3 P. tenuis, indicating that the antigen may be a useful serodiagnostic antigen for P. tenuis infection in this cervid species.

  • We have used the latter approach to examine, at the cellular level, the effects of ES prepared from L3 and adult nematodes.
  • Both NR uptake and cellular vacuolation were increased following exposure to larval or adult ES products.
  • ES preparations from adult worms induced more extensive vacuolation then those from L3 worms and, as with VacA treatment, adherent cells remained viable despite high levels of vacuolation.

  • [Title] [The clinical significance of real-time fluorescence PCR quantification of hepatocyte growth factor mRNA expression in acute leukemia].
  • OBJECTIVE: To detect quantitatively hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) mRNA expressions of bone marrow mononuclear cells (MNCs) in acute leukemia (AL) and investigate its clinical significance.
  • RESULTS: Expressions of HGF mRNA in a group of AL were higher significantly than these in a control group (6.936 +/- 1.613, 0.407 +/- 0.170, P < 0.001), but there was similarity between a group of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and group of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (7.127 +/- 1.911, 6.635 +/- 0.934, P > 0.05).
  • In AL subtypes, the expression of M5 (9.998 +/- 1.454) was higher than that of M2, M3, M4, L1, L2 and L3 (P < 0.001), but there were no differences among the latters (P > 0.05).

  • [Source] The source of this record is MEDLINE®, a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • Collagenolytic activity was found in all studied developmental stages of the nematode (third [L3] and fourth [L4] larval stages and adults).
  • In L3, the activity was maximum at pH 6.5 and, in the other stages, at 7.0.
  • At pH 7.0, most activity was observed in the immature adult, after the final moult, suggesting that the collagenolytic activity may be involved in remodelling of the cuticle and in sexual maturity.
  • On the other hand, at pH 6.5, activity may be related to tissue migration by L3 within the host.

  • The kids grazed in a pasture contaminated with L3 larvae of GIN.
  • Parasitic challenge was assessed by means of faecal egg counts (FEC), pasture larvae and adult nematodes in the GI tract of kids at slaughter.
  • The parasitic challenge of L3 on pasture reached its highest point at 42days and there were significant (P<0.01) differences between the numbers of Teladorsagia spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Haemonchus contortus, Oesophagostomum spp. and Chabertia spp. found in the GI tract of kids between the three groups; group A had the highest numbers.
  • Overall, the results showed that the increased protein content in the diet of growing kids grazing on a pasture contaminated with L3 nematode larvae resulted in the production of acceptable carcasses.

  • The focus of the current study was the investigation of time-dependent CCL2 and CCR2 expression in relation to central neuropathic pain development after spinal cord impact lesions of 100, 150, or 200 kdyn force on spinal cord level T9 in adult rats.
  • Force-defined SCI led to acute mechanical hypersensitivity in all lesion groups, and to persistent below-level pain in severely injured animals.
  • In dorsal horns (level L3-L5) of animals exhibiting chronic below-level pain CCL2 was co-expressed with transmitters and receptors that are involved in nociceptive processing like calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), Substance-P, vanilloid-receptor-1, and its activated phosphorylated form.

  • Using sequence from the hookworm expressed sequence tag project, specific primers were designed and used to amplify Ac-api-1 from A. caninum infective L3 cDNA by PCR.
  • The A. ceylanicum api-1 cDNA of 878 bp was cloned from L3 cDNA using the A. caninum primers.
  • Ac-api-1 mRNA was detected by reverse transcriptase PCR in eggs, L1, L3 and adult life cycle stages.
  • A polyclonal antiserum against Escherichia coli expressed recombinant Ac-API-1 detected the protein in adult A. caninum excretory/secretory products, but not in those from activated infective larvae.
  • Immunolocalisation experiments using the antiserum indicated that Ac-API-1 is present primarily in the pseudocoelomic fluid in adult hookworms.
  • Soluble, yeast-expressed Ac-API-1 failed to inhibit pepsin or a hookworm gut aspartyl protease in vitro, but inhibited approximately 30% of the proteolytic activity of adult excretory/secretory products.
  • The pseudocoleomic location, presence in all life cycle stages, lack of inhibitory activity against pepsin, and inhibitory activity against excretory/secretory products suggest that Ac-API-1 inhibits an unidentified, putative aspartyl protease secreted by adult hookworms, and may be released as an enzyme-inhibitor complex.

  • [Title] Endovascular repair of acute type B aortic dissection: long-term follow-up of true and false lumen diameter changes.
  • BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the technical success after endovascular treatment of acute type B aortic dissections and to evaluate true and false lumen diameter changes at long-term follow-up.
  • METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with acute type B-dissection who were treated by stent graft repair presented with rupture (n = 1), contained rupture (n = 2), compromised branch vessels (n = 14), pleural effusion (n = 11), rapid aortic diameter progression (n = 5), persistent pain (n = 3), refractory hypertension (n = 10), and an aortic diameter of more than 4 cm (n = 4).
  • Taking into account the perfusion status of the false lumen, diameter changes were monitored in the thoracic aorta at the level of the stented segment (L1), distal to the stent graft (L2), and at the level of the celiac trunk (L3).
  • In L3, the false lumen thrombosed in only 22%, and the mean difference of false lumen diameter increase reached significance at the 2-year follow-up.

  • Lumbar spinothalamic neurons in the lamina X of the L3-L4 spinal cord segment have been proposed to constitute the spinal ejaculation generator in male rats.
  • We previously showed that after injection of pseudorabies virus either in the bulbospongiosus muscle or in the prostate, retrogradely labeled cells in the L3-L4 segment also displayed galanin or neurokinin-1 receptor immunoreactivities, demonstrating a direct link between lumbar spinothalamic cells and two anatomical structures involved in the two phases of ejaculation i.e. the emission and the expulsion phases.
  • In order to provide with a more precise anatomical support for the role of lumbar spinothalamic cells in controlling ejaculation, we injected simultaneously in male adult rats two strains of recombinant pseudorabies virus, expressing either beta-galactosidase (PRV-BaBlu) or green fluorescent protein (PRV-152) in the prostate and in the bulbospongiosus muscle, respectively.
  • Double-labeled neurons with the two strains of pseudorabies virus were mainly found at the L3-L4 segment lateral to the central canal in lamina X and represented about 60% of the total number of pseudorabies virus-labeled neurons.

  • [Title] AFP-L3 in chronic liver diseases with persistent elevation of alpha-fetoprotein.
  • The value of AFP-L3, which is more specific than AFP, was examined in such patients.
  • AFP-L3 measurement was done by lectin-affinity electrophoresis coupled with antibody-affinity blotting.
  • When the cutoff value of AFP-L3 ratio was 15%, both the sensitivity and specificity were 71% for prediction of HCC during the next 2 years in all patients.
  • Ninety percent of tumors larger than 5 cm had AFP-L3 > 15%, compared with only 60% for tumors smaller than 2 cm.
  • Three patients in group A had AFP-L3 ratio > 17.5%.
  • CONCLUSION: AFP-L3 provides a clue in HCC detection in patients with persistent elevation of AFP.
  • However, AFP-L3 could be highly elevated in severe hepatitis.
