  • OBJECTIVE: Ceruminous neoplasms of the external ear canal are rare.
  • We report a case of carcinoma originating from the ceruminous glands of the external ear canal (EAC), operated based on a diagnosis of chronic otitis media with polyp.
  • CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old man presented with left ear discharge and hearing loss.
  • There was no history of bloody ear discharge or radiological findings of bony erosion suggestive of malignancy.
  • CONCLUSION: Ceruminous carcinomas should be considered in the differentialdiagnosis of middle and external ear pathologies in cases of soft tissue mass in the EAC.

  • [Title] Middle ear adenoma/carcinoid tumour: a case report and review of the literature.
  • Middle ear adenoma, a rare benign tumour with glandular and neuroendocrine differentiation, originates from the epithelial lining of the middle ear.
  • CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 52-year-old woman, who presented with progressive hearing loss and fullness in the left ear for 3 months.
  • Clinical examination revealed a mass in the left middle ear.
  • CONCLUSION: Middle ear adenoma is a benign tumour that is treated by complete surgical removal.
  • The immunohistochemical staining of the present case supports the suggestion that this tumour is best described by the term neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear.

  • Middle-ear ceruminous adenomas are rare benign neoplasms arising from the epithelium of the middle ear.
  • Progressive hearing loss, ear fullness and tinnitus are common symptoms of this tumour; facial nerve paresis and vestibular disturbances occur very infrequently.
  • We present two cases of middle-ear ceruminous adenomas, one showed rapid unilateral hearing loss with aural fullness, followed by purulent aural discharge and vertigo.
  • In the second case, the disease affected an already deaf ear and the only symptom of the disease was increasing vertigo.

  • [Title] Superficial parotidectomy versus retrograde partial superficial parotidectomy in treating benign salivary gland tumor (pleomorphic adenoma).
  • PURPOSE: Of all benign salivary gland tumors of the parotid gland, pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most common.
  • The purpose of our study is to compare 2 surgical techniques performed at the Ear, Nose, and Throat and Maxillofacial Departments, Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel, and determine which is preferable in treating this lesion.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 48 patients who underwent excision of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland between 1996 and 2005 at Rambam Medical Center: 18 were treated surgically with the classical superficial parotidectomy (SP) technique, using an anterograde approach, and 30 were treated with retrograde partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP).

  • INTRODUCTION: Middle ear glandular neoplasms are infrequent causes of a middle ear mass.
  • Herein, we present a new case of a middle ear glandular neoplasm.
  • Our objective is to review all cases described in the literature in order to identify the clinical features, the gross pathology, the histopathology, the immunohistochemistry, to discuss the differential diagnosis, the treatment, the rate of recurrence, the follow-up, the incidence of metastasis, the prognosis and to present a new classification of middle ear glandular neoplasm.
  • RESULTS: Ninety-four patients with a middle ear adenoma are included in this report.
  • We uncovered 75 patients with a carcinoid tumor and 19 patients with a middle ear adenoma diagnosis; the most common presenting symptom was a conductive hearing loss.
  • Middle ear adenomas are lesions that are typically white, gray or reddish brown.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Our study and the review of the literature showed adenomas and carcinoid tumors of the middle ear to be essentially indistinguishable benign tumors with metastatic potential.

  • We report six patients with benign middle ear tumors surgicaly removed: three with carcinoid, one with adenoma, and two with paraganglioma.

  • Pathohistology revealed a ceruminal gland adenoma.
  • They are a rare phenomenon and should be distinguished from middle ear adenomas, pleomorph ceruminal gland adenomas, ceruminal gland adenocarcinomas and cylindromas of the ceruminal glands.
  • Despite its rare occurrence, a ceruminal gland adenoma must be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of individual cholesteatoma cases.

  • [Title] Carcinoid tumor of the middle ear: clinical features, recurrences, and metastases.
  • OBJECTIVE: Present four new cases of carcinoid tumor of the middle ear, two of which developed late recurrences and regional metastases.
  • Review the literature to identify the clinical features, rate of recurrence, and incidence of metastasis of carcinoid tumor of the middle ear.
  • PATIENTS: Eligibility criteria consist of a diagnosis of carcinoid tumor of middle ear.
  • MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Clinical characteristics, rate of recurrence, and incidence of metastasis of carcinoid tumor of the middle ear.
  • RESULTS: Forty-six patients with carcinoid tumor of the middle ear are included in this report, 42 patients were identified from a review of the literature, and 4 new patients are presented.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Carcinoid tumor of the middle ear is an infrequent cause of a middle ear mass, with only 46 cases published.
  • Despite previous assertions of benignancy, the findings of this study suggest that carcinoid tumor of the middle ear is indeed a potential low-grade malignancy with documented metastatic potential.
  • Almost all middle ear adenomatous tumors ("adenoma" and "carcinoid") show evidence of neuroendocrine differentiation, and so at least some middle ear carcinoids ("adenomas") appear to represent well-differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas.
  • Presentation and symptoms are consistent with a middle ear mass and rarely include carcinoid syndrome.
  • Patients with carcinoid tumor of the middle ear require indefinite follow-up for possible recurrence or metastasis.

  • The overall mean age at presentation was significantly younger for skin primaries (36.2 years) than for ear (50.1 years) and nasal cavity (47.1 years) primaries.
  • Symptoms were in general non-specific and reflected the anatomic site of involvement, affecting the following areas in order of frequency: scalp skin (40.4%), ear and temporal bone (26%), and sinonasal tract (24%).
  • The differential diagnosis included a number of mesenchymal and epithelial tumors (paraganglioma, schwannoma, carcinoma, melanoma, neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear), depending on the anatomic site of involvement.
  • There is no statistically significant difference in 5-year survival rates by site: ear and temporal bone: 83.3%; nasal cavity: 81.8%; scalp skin: 78.5%; other sites: 65.5% (P = 0.155).

  • METHODS: Biopsy of a skin nodule demonstrated cylindroma, and fine-needle aspiration of the parotid mass suggested membranous basal cell adenoma, which was confirmed following superficial parotidectomy.
  • RESULTS: Eighteen cases of cylindromatosis with coexistent salivary gland membranous basal cell adenoma were reported.
  • Membranous basal cell adenoma may be mistaken for adenoid cystic carcinoma on cytologic or histologic examination.
