  • CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Salivary gland tumor management requires long-term follow-up because of tumor indolence and possible late recurrence and distant metastasis.
  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) accounts for 10-15% of such tumors.
  • Major salivary gland tumor extent was routinely assessed by preoperative ultrasonography.
  • RESULTS: There were eleven major salivary gland tumors (52.3%), seven submandibular and four parotid.
  • Ten patients (47.7%) had minor salivary gland ACC (all in palate), while the submandibular was the most frequently affected major one.
  • CONCLUSION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma has locally aggressive behavior.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a tumor of exocrine glands originating primarily from the minor and major salivary glands, lacrimal gland, bronchus, breast, and intestinal and genital tracts.
  • Intracranial remote metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma in salivary gland is quite rare.
  • The authors encountered a case of intrasellar remote metastasis from an adenoid cystic carcinoma of parotid gland origin, presenting with hyponatremia secondary to the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH).
  • To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of metastasis from an adenoid cystic carcinoma to intrasellar area.
  • A 78-year-old woman had an adenoid cystic carcinoma in the left parotid gland, which was resected surgically followed by local radiation therapy of 60 Gy.
  • Histopathological examination of the tumor specimens revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma, which had identical histological findings as those of the painful superficial cervical lymph nodes resected in the same operation.
  • Although rare, metastasis from tumors including those of salivary gland origin should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unusual pituitary tumors.

  • BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Salivary gland tumors are rare and specific lesions.
  • There are differences in the incidence and frequency of salivary tumors in both minor and major salivary glands in different countries.
  • This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of major and minor salivary gland tumors in Ahvaz in the south of Iran.
  • The incidence of malignant salivary gland tumors increased with age and male predominance was found in malignant tumors.
  • The majority of the tumors occurred in parotid gland.
  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the most common malignant tumors.
  • CONCLUSION: It was shown that the peak incidence age of all salivary gland tumors was the third to fifth decades, and malignant tumors mostly occurred in the sixth to eighth decades.

  • OBJECTIVE: We describe the surgical technique and peroperative management of tracheal and carinal replacement with aortic allografts for large salivary gland-type carcinoma and report the results with a mean 34 months' follow-up.
  • METHODS: We performed tracheal and carinal replacements with aortic allografts in 6 patients with extensive mucoepidermoid (n = 1) or adenoid cystic (n = 5) carcinomas.
  • Three of the first 4 patients experienced major morbidity, mainly fistulas between the esophagus and graft.

  • [Title] Differential expression of topoisomerase IIalpha protein in salivary gland carcinomas: histogenetic and prognostic implications.
  • BACKGROUND: Salivary gland carcinomas are relatively uncommon heterogeneous malignancies characterized by locoregional invasion and distant metastasis.
  • Topoisomerase IIalpha (topoIIalpha), located at chromosome 17q21-22, is considered a major mediator of cell proliferation and DNA replication.
  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of topoIIalpha in various types of salivary gland tumors and its biological significance.
  • METHODS: The protein expression of topoIIalpha was evaluated immunohistochemically in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from 54 salivary gland carcinomas and 20 benign tumors (10 pleomorphic adenomas and 10 Warthin's tumors).
  • The primary salivary gland carcinoma specimens consisted of 17 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 7 adenocarcinomas not otherwise specified, 7 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 6 salivary duct carcinomas, 3 acinic cell carcinomas, 3 carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenomas, 3 epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas, 2 carcinosarcomas, 2 lymphoepithelial carcinomas, 2 myoepithelial carcinomas, 1 oncocytic carcinoma, and 1 squamous cell carcinoma.
  • RESULTS: Of the 54 primary salivary gland carcinomas, 38 (70%) showed positive expression (> or = 10%) of topoIIalpha protein, and 16 carcinomas (30%) and all benign tumors were negative (p < 0.001).
  • Expression of topoIIalpha was more frequently observed in salivary duct carcinoma, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, adenocarcinoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma, solid type, and it was associated with advanced stage and shortened survival.
  • Furthermore, it may provide useful prognostic information and suggests the potential efficacy of topoIIalpha-targeting therapy in patients with salivary gland carcinoma.

  • METHODS: Clinical records of 64 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of major salivary glands followed up for more than 7 years were reviewed.
  • CONCLUSION: Presence or absence of nerve invasion, histological subtype, clinical stage, and positive or negative surgical margin are the independent factors affecting the prognosis of patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of salivary glands.

  • OBJECTIVE: To investigate the promoter methylation status of tumor suppressor gene and the relationship between promoter methylation and mRNA, protein expression of tumor suppressor gene in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) cell lines.
  • RESULTS: All the three salivary ACC cell lines exhibited E-cad, p16 promoter methylation, but no methylation of RASSF1A, DAPK, and MGMT was found.

  • ACC mostly occurring in the major and minor salivary glands, has some unique characteristics such as slow growth, diffuse invasion, and high incidence of distant metastasis.
  • It is a high malignant carcinoma characterized by intensive local invasion and insidious distant metastasis to the lung at an early stage, which is responsible for a poor long-term survival rate.
  • The main clinical treatment to adenoid cystic carcinoma depended on surgical operation in the past.
  • However, it was not so easy to completely excise adenoid cystic carcinoma which resulting in the residual of tumor cells.
  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma is not sensitive to conventional chemotherapeutics, so it is necessary to explore a new kind of drug which possesses inhibition and killing effects to this tumor.

  • PTEN promoter hypermethylation is a major epigenetic silencing mechanism leading to self-repression in these tumors.
  • The present study aimed to investigate whether PTEN promoter methylation is involved in the regulation of the PTEN gene in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) cells.
  • The expression of PTEN in ACC-2 cells was found to be significantly lower than that in normal salivary gland epithelial cells using RT-PCR analysis.
  • These results indicate that the hypermethylation of the PTEN promoter region leads to lower expression of PTEN gene in ACC cells, which aids in the development of PTEN as a molecular marker for the early diagnosis of this carcinoma.

  • Among the heterogeneous histologic subtypes of salivary gland carcinomas, only salivary duct carcinoma had a similar frequency of deletion in this region.
  • This locus contains two major candidate tumor suppressor genes, PLAGL1 and LATS1.

  • BACKGROUND: Epithelial salivary gland tumors are very uncommon in pediatric age.
  • These results are presented in conjunction with a literature review of salivary tumors with a view to providing an up-to-date overview of the clinical course, prognosis, and treatment options for this rare tumor.
  • PROCEDURE: Fifty-two cases of epithelial salivary tumors were reviewed and the clinical-pathological information concerning tumor characteristics, therapy, and follow-up were collected.
  • RESULTS: The major salivary glands were the main site of tumor occurrence (79% of cases arose in parotid glands); 37 patients had benign tumors (pleomorphic adenoma), 15 had malignant tumors (12 mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 9 low grade).
  • CONCLUSIONS: Epithelial salivary glands tumor in children had different characteristics compared with their adult counterpart with respect to the frequency of histotypes and site of occurrence, but their prognosis seems to be similar.

  • The aim of this study was to determine whether hK13 is expressed in salivary gland tissues and salivary gland tumors (both benign and malignant), in order to compare normal with tumor tissues.
  • Pleomorphic adenomas (PA), adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC), polymorphous low grade adenocarcinomas (PLGA), acinic cell carcinomas (ACI), mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC) and adenocarcinomas not otherwise specified (ANOS) of both minor and major salivary glands were examined.
  • The results of this study indicate that most salivary gland tumors show high levels of expression of hK13.
  • Overall, staining in PA was significantly less than that seen in normal salivary gland tissue.
  • PLGA, ACC and ANOS each stained significantly more than normal salivary gland tissue while MEC and ACI did not.
  • In conclusion, we demonstrate the high expression of hK13 in several common salivary gland tumors.

  • One of the major advantages of molecular tumor markers is that valid results are obtained on minute cell and/or tissue samples.
  • This is also true for the most frequent malignant salivary gland tumors after the mucoepidermoid carcinoma, i.e. adenoid cystic carcinomas and acinic cell carcinomas.

  • OBJECTIVES: The study was performed to evaluate the prognostic relevance of cell proliferation associated with Ki-67/ Mib-1 immunostaining in malignant tumors of the major salivary glands.
  • METHODS: Cell proliferation was evaluated by Mib-1 antibody against Ki-67 antigen in 41 patients with cancer of the parotid or submandibular glands, including 14 acinic cell carcinomas, 12 ductal carcinomas, 7 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 5 carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenoma, 1 adenoid cystic carcinoma, 1 undifferentiated carcinoma, and 1 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma.
  • CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first study to stratify different risk classes in early T1-T2 or N0 malignant tumors of the major salivary glands that identified aggressive lesions with elevated Ki-67 expression at an initial stage.

  • The human kallikrein 8 protein (KLK8) is expressed in many normal tissues including esophagus, skin, testis, tonsil, kidney, breast, and salivary gland, and is found in biological fluids including breast milk, amniotic fluid, seminal fluid and serum.
  • The aim of this study was to determine whether KLK8 is expressed in salivary gland tissues and salivary gland tumors (both benign and malignant), in order to compare normal with tumor tissues.
  • Pleomorphic adenomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, polymorphous low grade adenocarcinomas, acinic cell carcinomas, mucoepidermoid carcinomas, and adenocarcinomas NOS of both minor and major salivary glands were examined.
  • The results of this study indicate that most salivary gland tumors show high levels of expression of KLK8.

  • CONTEXT: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare neoplasm that usually arises from the salivary, lacrimal, or other exocrine glands.
  • AIM: To analyze the presentation and natural history of cases of adenoid cystic tumors of salivary glands in our institution; and to compare with the existing literature.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on 18 patients of ACC of the salivary glands treated between 2004 and 2008 were reviewed with respect to clinical presentation, stage, and histology.
  • RESULTS: There were 8 cases of major salivary gland tumors (47%), of which 2 were in the submandibular and 6 were involving the parotid.
  • Ten patients (53%) had minor salivary gland involvement.

  • RATIONALE: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common neoplasm of major and minor salivary gland origin, followed by infectious reasons and sialolithiasis.
  • The salivary duct carcinoma represents a rare variant of the group of adenocarcinomas originated from the salivary glands, especially extremely rare from minor salivary gland origin.
  • A biopsy showed a rare salivary duct carcinoma of comedo-type originated from the left sublingual salivary gland.
  • DISCUSSION: Salivary duct carcinoma is a rare, high-grade malignant epithelial neoplasm, which occurs almost exclusively in the parotid.
  • As presented, it can also occur in minor salivary glands.
  • Histologically it is composed of structures that resemble expanded salivary glands.
  • There is some histologic similarity to intraductal carcinoma of the breast.
  • Differential diagnosis comprises adenoid cystic carcinoma, metastases of other adenocarcinomas, such as the carcinoma of the thyroid gland and the comedocarcinoma of the breast.
  • CONCLUSION: A rare case of a salivary duct carcinoma of sublingual salivary gland origin is presented.

  • BACKGROUND: To report the outcomes and early to long term treatment complications among pediatric patients with major salivary gland malignancies treated at a single institution.
  • Patients less than 19 years of age with a diagnosis of a major salivary gland malignancy were identified at the M. D.
  • The majority of tumors arose in the parotid gland (83%), and the most common pathology was mucoepidermoid carcinoma (46%).
  • Lymphatic metastasis was identified in 37% of patients, nearly all with mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Survival of pediatric patients with major salivary gland carcinomas is favorable.

  • PURPOSE: As a review of central malignant salivary gland tumor cases in Southwest China in the past 20 years, this study provided the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic information of these rare lesions.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: In our study, 22 cases of central malignant salivary gland tumor treated between 1986 to 2006 at West China Stomatology Hospital of Sichuan University were retrospectively analyzed.
  • The most frequent histologic type was the mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
  • CONCLUSION: Central malignant salivary gland tumors often occurred in the middle-aged patients, and there were more cases in the mandible than in the maxilla.

  • In this study, 496 epithelial and mesenchymal tumors of major and minor salivary glands diagnosed at Londrina Cancer Institute during the period from 1972 to 2001 were reviewed.
  • The majority of the cases occurred in the parotid gland (67.7%), followed by the minor salivary glands (22.8%) and submandibular gland (9.5%).
  • Among the minor salivary gland tumors, the palate was the most frequent location (67%).
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent tumor representing 54.2% of all cases, followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma (13.5%), Warthin's tumor (8.5%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (7.9%).

  • Malignant tumours instead were fewer in number compared to the literature (14% vs 25-30%); the most frequent being mucoepidermoid carcinoma (18.2%) of which 44% G1, 33% G2 and 23% G3.
  • Adenoid-cystic carcinoma was observed in 15.3% and < or = 10% for all the other most frequent histological malignant neoplasms.
  • Oncological results obtained were compared with those reported in the literature: in fact for all benign neoplasms relapse ratings are about 5%, while for malignant tumours the worst prognosis was in squamous cell carcinoma with median of 37.7 on survival and metastasis rate of 16.5%.
  • Finally, mucoepidermoid carcinoma tumours showed best survival, followed by adenoid-cystic carcinoma with ranges, respectively, 83 and 81.

  • OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of FDG-PET in the management of patients with salivary gland malignancy.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed 45 FDG PET studies in 31 patients with salivary malignant tumors, using PET (33 studies) and PET/CT (12 studies).
  • Histology consisted of 8 adenocarcinomas, 8 squamous cell carcinomas, 4 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 4 carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenomas, 2 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 2 poorly differentiated carcinomas, 1 salivary duct carcinoma, 1 lymphoepithelial carcinoma and 1 melanoma.
  • RESULTS: In the initial staging group, all 12 primary lesions (100%) showed positive FDG uptake (5 squamous cell carcinomas, 2 adenocarcinomas, 2 poorly differentiated carcinomas, 1 carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, 1 salivary duct carcinoma, 1 lymphoepithelial carcinoma).
  • Overall, FDG PET resulted in a major change in management in 11 of 31 patients (35%).
  • CONCLUSION: This study shows that FDG PET has a significant impact on the management of patients with salivary malignant tumors in both the initial staging and restaging.

  • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the types and distribution of tumors of salivary glands in north Jordanians.
  • STUDY DESIGN: The records of the Department of Pathology at Jordan University of Science and Technology were reviewed for patients who were treated for salivary gland tumors from 1991 to 2002.
  • The most frequent benign and malignant neoplasms found were pleomorphic adenoma (54%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (13%), respectively.
  • The most common major and minor salivary gland sites were the parotid (51%) and palatal glands (20%), respectively.
  • Although most of major gland tumors were adenomas, carcinomas of the minor glands were only slightly less frequent than adenomas.
  • The most frequent malignant parotid tumors were adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
  • The most frequent minor salivary gland malignant tumors were palatal adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • CONCLUSION: North Jordanians with salivary gland tumors were found to have similar characteristics with patients of other countries with regard to tumor type, tumor site distribution, and age and sex of patients.

  • The classification system for malignant salivary gland tumors (MST) is largely dependent on its histogenesis.
  • Fifty six primary major and minor gland MST were stained with anti-cox-2 antibody and rated with a combined score that added a scale of intensity to the percentage of tumor cells that overexpressed the cox-2 protein.
  • Strong cox-2 overexpression was noted in all MST of proposed excretory duct origin: salivary duct carcinoma (100%), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) (92%), and adenocarcinoma nos (AdC nos) (83%).
  • Primary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) was the exception.
  • Negative expression was noted in all tumors of proposed intercalated duct origin (adenoid cystic carcinoma, basal cell adenocarcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma) with the exception of one case of polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma.

  • BACKGROUND: Carcinomas of the major salivary glands (M-SGC) comprise a morphologically diverse group of rare tumors of largely unknown cause.
  • Squamous cell (IR, 3.44) and mucoepidermoid (IR, 3.23) carcinomas occurred most frequently among males, whereas mucoepidermoid (IR, 2.67), acinic cell (IR, 1.57), and adenoid cystic (IR, 1.40) carcinomas were most common among females.
  • Mucoepidermoid, acinic cell, and adenoid cystic carcinomas predominated in females through age approximately 50 years; thereafter, IRs of acinic cell and adenoid cystic carcinomas were nearly equal among females and males, whereas IRs of mucoepidermoid carcinoma among males exceeded IRs among females (IRR, 1.57; 95% CI, 1.38-1.78).
  • Except for mucoepidermoid and adenoid cystic carcinomas, which occurred equally among all races, other subtypes had significantly lower incidence among Blacks and Asians/Pacific Islanders than among Whites.
  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma occurred equally in the submandibular and parotid glands, and other M-SGC histologic subtypes evaluated had 77% to 98% lower IRs in the submandibular gland.

  • PURPOSE: To determine factors predictive of local-regional recurrence (LRR) after surgery alone for carcinomas of the major salivary glands in an attempt to evaluate the potential role of postoperative radiation therapy.
  • METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1960 and 2004, 207 patients with carcinomas of the major salivary glands were treated with definitive surgery without postoperative radiation therapy.
  • Histology was: 67 mucoepidermoid (32%), 50 adenoid cystic (24%), 34 acinic cell (16%), 23 malignant mixed (11%), 16 adenocarcinoma (8%), 6 oncocytic (3%), 6 myoepithelial (3%), and 5 other (2%).
  • CONCLUSION: Lymph node metastasis, high tumor grade, positive margins, and T3-4 stage predict for significant rates of LRR after surgery for carcinomas of the major salivary glands.

  • [Title] A study of fine needle aspiration cytology of salivary gland lesions with histopathological corroboration.
  • The diagnostic utility of fine needle aspiration cytology as initial work up of salivary gland enlargement was assessed in one hundred and eighty-five salivary gland specimens over three years period and corroborated with histopathology, whenever feasible.
  • All smears were evaluated according to cell size, amount of cytoplasm, cytologic atypia and presence of lymphocytes. (a) Variable cytologic appearances of pleomorphic salivary adenoma were observed. (b) Cellular pleomorphic adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma showed basaloid cell features. (c) Tumours with intermediate size cells and bland cytology included low grade muco-epidermoid carcinoma and cystic lesions. (d) Warthin's tumour, oncocytoma, salivary duct carcinoma and high grade muco-epidermoid carcinoma revealed large cells and abundant cytoplasm with or without atypia.
  • A major diagnostic categories were inflammatory lesions (n = 7 5), cystic lesions (n = 9), benign tumours (n = 81), malignant neoplasms (n = 1 8) and normal acinar pattern (n = 2).
  • Malignant tumours included muco-epidermoid carcinoma (n = 5), adenoid cystic carcinoma (n = 3), acinic cell carcinoma (n = 2), adenocarcinoma (n= 2), squamous cell carcinoma (n = 1), undifferentiated carcinoma (n= 4) and malignant lymphoma (n = 1).
  • So it can be concluded that fine needle aspiration cytology can play important role in early diagnosis and subsequent therapeutic planning of salivary gland lesions.

  • [Title] Epithelial salivary tumors in Sri Lanka: a retrospective study of 713 cases.
  • OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic data to determine the distribution of epithelial salivary tumors, especially minor salivary tumors, in Sri Lanka.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 713 salivary tumors diagnosed at the Department of Oral Pathology, during the period from 1990 to 2007 were reviewed.
  • RESULTS: Out of the 713 epithelial salivary tumors, 356 (49.9%) were classified as benign and 357 (50.1%) as malignant, indicating a benign-to-malignant ratio of 1:1.
  • The majority of both benign (29%) and malignant (39%) tumors occurred in the minor salivary glands.
  • Malignant tumors were slightly more common in minor salivary glands, indicating a benign-to-malignant ratio of 1:0.75.
  • Among the minor salivary sites, palate was the most frequent location, accounting for 51% of the tumors (246 out of 486).
  • Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent tumor, representing 38% of all tumors (274 out of 713), followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma 21.6% (154 out of 713) and adenoid cystic carcinoma 13.5% (96 out of 713).
  • The commonest benign and malignant tumors were pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma in both major and minor salivary glands.
  • CONCLUSION: According to the findings of this study, equal frequencies of benign and malignant tumors indicate higher occurrences of malignancies, especially in the minor salivary glands, in the Sri Lankan population.

  • This study assessed the clinical and histological features and therapeutic efficacy of 25 cases of sublingual gland tumours from 1998 to 2008.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma was mainly of the histological type, and the other histological classifications included mucoepidermoid carcinoma, pleomorphic adenoma, myoepithelioma, oncocytoma and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma.

  • [Title] Patterns of nodal relapse after surgery and postoperative radiation therapy for carcinomas of the major and minor salivary glands: what is the role of elective neck irradiation?
  • PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of nodal relapses from carcinomas of the salivary glands among patients with clinically negative necks in an attempt to determine the potential utility of elective neck irradiation (ENI).
  • METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1960 and 2004, 251 patients with clinically N0 carcinomas of the salivary glands were treated with surgery and postoperative radiation therapy.
  • Histology was: adenoid cystic (84 patients), mucoepidermoid (60 patients), adenocarcinoma (58 patients), acinic cell (21 patients), undifferentiated (11 patients), carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (7 patients), squamous cell (7 patients), and salivary duct carcinoma (3 patients); 131 patients (52%) had ENI.
  • The highest crude rates of nodal relapse among those treated without ENI were found in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (67%), undifferentiated carcinoma (50%), adenocarcinoma (34%), and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (29%).
  • There were no nodal failures observed among patients with adenoid cystic or acinic cell histology.

  • PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this article is to offer an update on the treatment and prognosis of the most common epithelial tumors of the lacrimal gland, report on new pathological entities and offer a review of the classification of lacrimal gland tumors.
  • RECENT FINDINGS: Improvements have been made in the understanding of lacrimal gland lesions with the knowledge that lacrimal gland tumors compare to the more common counterparts of the major salivary glands.
  • Therefore, the WHO's classification of salivary gland tumors has been adapted to the lacrimal gland pathology.
  • Until recently, primary adenocarcinomas of the lacrimal gland were not further subclassified, but they can now be divided into low-grade and high-grade malignancies.
  • The adjunctive use of intra-arterial cytoreductive chemotherapy for the management of adenoid cystic carcinoma is one of the most important advancements on the management of these aggressive tumors.
  • Another important step forward has been taken on carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland, which is subclassified into noninvasive carcinoma, with an excellent prognosis after complete excision and invasive carcinoma for which the prognosis is still guarded despite adjunctive radiotherapy.
  • SUMMARY: This article offers an update on diagnosis, classification and treatment of common and rare epithelial lacrimal gland tumors.

  • OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the types and distribution of neoplasm of salivary glands in a Turkish population.
  • STUDY DESIGN: The histological diagnosis records of the Department of Pathology at Cumhuriyet University were reevaluated for 125 patients who were treated for salivary gland tumors from 1987 to 2008.
  • RESULTS: A total of 125 primary salivary gland neoplasms, consisting of 95 (76%) benign and 30 (24%) malignant groups were recorded.
  • The most common major and minor salivary gland sites were the parotid (61.6%) and palatal glands (9.6%), respectively.
  • Among the malignant group, adenoid cystic carcinoma was the most prevalent.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Although there were some discrepancies, the characteristics of salivary gland tumors of Turkish patients are in line with those of patients from other countries according to tumor type, tumor site distribution, and age and sex of patients.

  • OBJECTIVE: To investigate 5 years' experience with fine needle aspiration (FNA) of salivary glands at a single academic center.
  • STUDY DESIGN: A total of 191 salivary gland FNAs were performed at Louisiana State University Health Science Center from 2003 to 2007, and all were done on major salivary glands except for 1 case.
  • There were 5 false negatives: 2 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 1 acinic cell carcinoma, 1 polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma and 1 metastatic basaloid squamous cell carcinoma.
  • The only false positive was a pleomorphic adenoma misdiagnosed as adenoid cystic carcinoma.
  • The overall accuracy in distinguishing benign from malignant lesions was 79.1%, and the sensitivity for salivary neoplasia was 89.4%.
  • CONCLUSION: Our results are consistent with the literature that salivary gland FNA has good sensitivity, specificity and accuracy in the diagnosis of salivary neoplasms.
