  • [Title] Clinicopathological pattern of malignant parotid gland tumors in Saudi Arabia.
  • OBJECTIVE: To report our experience of varied presentations and diverse histopathological spectrum of parotid gland malignancies.
  • METHODS: This retrospective analysis incorporated patients with histological evidence of malignant parotid tumors at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia over a 20-year period from 1984 through 2004.
  • Nine (28.1%) patients had mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 8 (25%) adenoid cystic carcinoma, 6 (18.7%) adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified, and 2 (6.2%) were reported to have carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma.
  • CONCLUSION: Malignant parotid tumors are exceedingly rare, occurring at a relatively earlier age group with male preponderance, and invariably declare at a late clinical stage in our community.

  • [Title] Detection of C-KIT (CD117) molecule in benign and malignant salivary gland tumours.
  • In the present study we analysed the expression of this molecule in salivary gland tumours.
  • Archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of 40 benign and 57 malignant salivary gland tumours were retrieved and retrospectively studied immunohistochemically using a polyclonal C-KIT antibody in an Envision/HRP technique.
  • In addition five samples of chronic submandibular sialadenitis, five normal minor salivary glands and parotid or submandibular gland tissue adjacent to benign tumour were also studied.
  • C-KIT expression was observed in cases of adenoid cystic, acinic cell polymorphous low grade, epithelial-myoepithelial, carcinosarcoma and basal cell adenocarcinomas, as in luminal cells of pleomorphic adenomas, in serous acinar and only in intercalated and a small number of striated ductal cells of inflammatory salivary gland tissue, whereas normal salivary lobules were generally negative except a weak positivity of intercalated cells.
  • Contrary to other reports, this study suggests that, C-KIT protein does not appear to be an exclusively specific marker for benign or malignant salivary gland neoplasms, but may be useful in differential diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma from polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma.
  • Furthermore its expression in serous acinar cells in sialadenitis and intercalated ductal cells in normal and inflammatory lesions may indicate a possible participation in pathogenesis of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic salivary gland diseases.

  • Context. Immunohistochemical stains for p53 are used as a diagnostic marker associated with malignancy in several histologic types of salivary gland tumors.
  • Design. Paraffin blocks of 29 cases of PA, which were surrounded by normal parotid gland, and 27 cases of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma were retrieved and validated.
  • In all cases of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, a PA "ghost" was identified, and the malignant element was either undifferentiated carcinoma or adenocarcinoma.
  • Results. The results showed negative nuclear expression of P53 in normal parotid gland.

  • Primary malignant melanoma of the salivary gland is a rare disease, and only afew cases describing FNAC have been reported.
  • CASE: We present a case of primary malignant melanoma of the right parotid gland.
  • It was remarkable that 3 months after diagnosis of primary malignant melanoma in the right parotid gland, supraclavicular lymph nodes appeared on the left side.
  • CONCLUSION: The cellular aspirates from primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland were cytologically mistaken for adenocarcinoma.

  • PURPOSE: The aim was to assess the value of ultrasound (US) in differentiating benign from malignant parotid gland lesions.
  • METHODS: During a 3-year period, US-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed on 89 parotid lesions with a size > or = 5 mm in 68 patients.
  • The majority of the parotid lesions were hypoechoic.
  • CONCLUSION: US can aid in the differentiation of parotid gland tumors, although benign and malignant parotid tumors often have a similar sonographic appearance.

  • Primary site distribution included the following: oral cavity in 111 patients, larynx in 92, oropharynx in 32, thyroid gland in 22, skin of the lateral face or scalp in 16, hypopharynx in 11, unknown primary in 7, and parotid gland in 6.
  • Tumor histologic type in the sublevel IIB+ population was squamous cell carcinoma in 80%, papillary carcinoma in 8%, melanoma in 8%, and adenocarcinoma in 4%.
  • The chi(2) test showed a significantly higher risk for LN metastases at sublevel IIB in patients affected by parotid gland primary tumors (33%), tumors of the skin or scalp (25%), unknown primary tumors (14%), and cancers of the oral cavity (10%) (P = .02) and in those clinically staged as cN+ (P < .001).
  • CONCLUSIONS: Sublevel IIB dissection is strongly recommended for all patients with cN+ tumors and in those affected by tumor of the parotid gland, skin, and scalp scheduled for elective ND.

  • Carcinomas arising in or from the epithelial component of preexisting parotid Warthin tumors (WTs) are rare; the other histologic types of carcinoma found to arise from WTs are adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified, undifferentiated, mucoepidermoid, squamous cell, and oncocytic.
  • The aim of this study is to describe the clinicopathologic features of a distinct salivary gland neoplasm, previously undescribed, with a striated duct phenotype arising from WT.
  • We have designated this neoplasm "Warthin adenocarcinoma" (WA).
  • Anderson Cancer Center for cases of malignant WT and salivary adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified diagnosed from January 1, 1985, through December 31, 2006, and evaluated patients' medical records and pathologic material.
  • We identified 2 cases of WA; both patients were women, 44 and 60 years of age, with 4.0- and 4.5-cm tumors in the left parotid gland.
  • Warthin adenocarcinoma is a unique salivary gland carcinoma representing the malignant epithelial counterpart of WT.

  • Acinic cell adenocarcinoma is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm with a relatively low rate of lymphangitic spread to regional lymph nodes.
  • We encountered an unusual example of acinic cell adenocarcinoma that initially presented in the lung, whereas the primary parotid carcinoma, despite extensive clinical evaluation, only became apparent 1 year after initial diagnosis.
  • The histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of the tumor in the parotid gland and lung were similar.
  • This presentation is unique, showing that peripheral lung tumors of salivary gland type are likely to be metastatic, and careful clinical evaluation is warranted in establishing their primary site of origin.

  • [Title] Differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumors using deconvolution-based perfusion CT imaging: feasibility of the method and initial results.
  • AIM: We evaluated the feasibility of perfusion CT (CTP) of the parotid gland and attempted to differentiate benign from malignant tumors.
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: CTP was performed in 17 patients with benign tumors and 10 patients with malignant parotid tumors.
  • Regions of interest were placed through the tumor site and the contralateral healthy parotid tissue.
  • CONCLUSIONS: CTP of the parotid gland is feasible and may differentiate malignant from non-malignant lesions by means of absolute BF, BV and BV ratio values.

  • Malignant neoplasms of the salivary gland are uncommon entities in which surgical resection of the primary lesion has been accepted as a standard therapeutic option.
  • We treated one patient with recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma arising from the sublingual gland and one patient with primary adenocarcinoma arising from the parotid gland with transfemoral intraarterial chemotherapy, based on full-dose cisplatin and docetaxel and concurrent external-beam radiotherapy.
  • The concomitant chemoradiotherapy of cisplatin and docetaxel seemed to be a practicable option for patients with recurrent and unresectable salivary gland carcinomas.

  • The causes of the abducens nerve paralysis of our patients were as follows: two cases with head trauma, three cases with pituitary tumors, one case with sphenoid sinus mucocele, one case with greater superficial petrosal nerve cellular schwannoma at the petrous apex, one case with hypertensive intraventricular hemmorhage, one case with hydrocephalus, and one case with parotid tumor and skull base/brain stem invasion.
  • RESULTS: Depending on the location of the lesion, the symptoms due to nuclear damage showed no improvement as in our case with adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland.

  • METHODS AND RESULTS: A 55-year-old man with a history of a high-grade acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid was seen with a mass at the surgical site and metastatic foci in the scalp 10 months postoperatively.

  • Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a benign rare tumor of the salivary gland.
  • It typically presents in the 6th decade of life as a slowly growing parotid mass.
  • We report the second case of sebaceous lymphadenoma in the pediatric population and the youngest reported so far that presented in a 13 year old girl with a parotid mass.

  • A 72-year-old female is described who was admitted to the hospital with a giant mixed tumor of the left parotid gland that had grown to a weight of 6051 g within 20 years and ultimately underwent resection of the mass.
  • Histopathological examination revealed adenocarcinoma cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and mitotic figures proliferated in pleomorphic adenoma.
  • Many authors have reported giant tumors weighing more than a few kilograms of the parotid glands, and most were benign.
  • The present tumor was the sixth largest among all the parotid tumors, including both benign and malignant, which were reported.

  • Parotid neoplasms represent 3% of all head and neck tumours, and most are benign.
  • Sixteen patients presented with a history of a painless parotid lump.
  • At histology, 10 pleomorphic adenomas, 4 Warthin's tumours, 1 lymphoepithelial cyst and 1 sebaceous adenocarcinoma were detected.
  • Superficial parotidectomy seems to be the best choice of treatment for benign parotid tumours, since it allows complete excision of the tumour with sparing of the facial nerve.

  • [Title] The Involvement of RCAS1 in Creating a Suppressive Tumor Microenvironment in Patients with Salivary Gland Adenocarcinoma.
  • The aim of the present study has been to evaluate the role of RCAS1 in creating the suppressive tumor microenvironment in cases of parotid adenocarcinoma.
  • The tissue samples of salivary gland adenocarcinomas and their stroma and the palatine tonsils which constituted the reference tissue sample group were obtained during routine surgical procedures.
  • A statistically significantly higher RCAS1 immunoreactivity level was found in the adenocarcinoma tissue samples in comparison to that found in the stromal tissue samples.
  • A statistically significantly higher RCAS1 immunoreactivity was also identified in the adenocarcinoma tissue samples derived from patients who had lymph node metastases in comparison to patients without such metastases.
  • The infiltration of CD68-positive cells was significantly stronger in the adenocarcinoma and stromal tissue slides than in the reference group tissue slides; moreover, the infiltration was a good deal more prominent in the stromal tissue than in the adenocarcinoma tissue.
  • Additionally, the infiltration of CD3- and CD25-positive cells was more prominent in the reference tissue slides than in the adenocarcinoma and stromal tissue slides, and was stronger in the adenocarcinoma tissue than in the stromal tissue.
  • Furthermore, the infiltration of Foxp3-positive cells was seen exclusively in the stroma whereas it was not even detected in the adenocarcinoma tissue.
  • The present study demonstrates that RCAS1 expression by both tumor cells and tumor-associated macrophages may participate in creating the immunosuppressive microenvironment in parotid gland adenocarcinoma, thus promoting tumor development as well as metastases.

  • The surgical treatment of malignant parotid gland tumors combined with (125)I seed implant brachytherapy and preservation of the facial nerve is described.
  • Tumor and parotid gland resection with preservation of the facial nerve was carried out in 12 patients with malignant parotid gland tumors. (125)I seeds were implanted into the target area intra- or postoperatively.
  • A limited surgical resection combined with (125)I seed implant brachytherapy is therefore considered to be an alternative treatment for local control of malignant parotid gland tumors with preservation of the facial nerve.

  • [Title] [A retrospective study of malignant parotid tumors].
  • The clinical features of 74 patients (39 men, 35 women; mean age, 62 years) with malignant parotid tumors were retrospectively investigated.
  • Tumors located in both lobes of the parotid gland were the most frequent type of tumor (49%).
  • As for the major histopathologic types, the five-year survival rates were 69% for mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 48% for adenocarcinoma, 71% for adenoid cystic carcinoma, and 100% for acinic cell carcinoma and malignant mixed tumor.
  • A total parotidectomy with total removal of the facial nerve seemed necessary for T3 and T4 cases, especially those with adenocarcinoma or mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

  • Salivary gland tumors usually occur as single lesions.
  • There are 31 acceptable cases of multiple malignant salivary gland neoplasms reported in the world literature.
  • Bilateral acinic cell adenocarcinoma was the most frequent combination of multiple salivary gland malignancy, accounting for 14 cases (10 synchronous and four metachronous).
  • All involved the parotid glands bilaterally with the exception of one case that involved parotid and submandibular gland.
  • Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma accounted for three of the four cases of multiple malignant tumors involving minor salivary glands.

  • BACKGROUND: Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the colon is a frequently encountered medical situation.
  • Metastasis to the mandible from adenocarcinoma of the colon is very unusual and rarely reported.
  • We report the case of a 73-year-old man with metastatic adenocarcinoma to the mandible.
  • METHODS: The patient was referred for evaluation of a mass of 2 months' duration in the right parotid gland.
  • RESULTS: A biopsy of the mass in the mandible was performed, and metastatic adenocarcinoma of colonic origin was diagnosed.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Although rare, metastatic adenocarcinoma from the colon to the mandible and parotid area should be included in the differential diagnosis of masses in this area.
  • After analysis of our case and a review of the literature, we conclude that metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the colon is quite rare and represents incurable disseminated disease.

  • [Title] [Three cases of adenocarcinoma of the head and neck maintaining QOL by administration of docetaxel].
  • A primary head and neck adenocarcinoma is a comparatively rare disease, and surgical resection has been the first choice for its treatment.
  • In the present study, we performed chemotherapy with weekly administration of docetaxel in 3 cases with unresectable or recurrent adenocarcinoma of the head and neck on an outpatient basis, resulting in long-term maintenance of the patients' QOL.
  • Each case had submandibular gland carcinoma, parotid gland carcinoma, or parathyroid gland carcinoma.
  • The present results might suggest that it is possible to treat patients with adenocarcinoma in the head and neck without decreasing patients' QOL.

  • The relative rarity of this tumor is a diagnostic challenge to the cytopathologist, especially when present as a metastatic lesion to an intraparotid lymph node, where the differential diagnosis includes primary parotid neoplasms, as well as various other metastatic malignancies.
  • We report a case of a 65-year-old African-American male with a history of ductopapillary apocrine adenocarcinoma of the eyelid, diagnosed 6 weeks ago now presenting with a recurrence in the same area.
  • FNAB of the parotid mass showed a well-differentiated papillary adenocarcinoma with a cystic component, similar to a previously excised ductopapillary apocrine adenocarcinoma of the eyelid.

  • PURPOSE: Many articles have discussed the clinical features of previously untreated parotid cancer, but the clinical characteristics and treatment of recurrent parotid cancer have not yet been fully described.
  • MATERIALS: We retrospectively reviewed 20 patients with recurrent parotid cancer and analyzed the therapeutic strategies and the prognostic factors.
  • CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that aggressive definitive surgery may be justified for the treatment of recurrent parotid cancer.

  • The aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunoreactivity of vimentin and MT in the salivary gland adenocarcinoma and its stroma in order to observe the phenomenon of stromal remodeling.
  • The tissue samples of salivary gland adenocarcinomas and their stromas and the palatine tonsils which constituted the reference group were obtained during routine surgical procedures.
  • The immunoreactivity of vimentin, metalothionein, CD56, CD57 antigens was evaluated by the immunohistochemistry method in 30 tissue samples of parotid adenocarcinoma.
  • A statistically significantly higher level of MT immunoreactivity was observed in the adenocarcinoma tissue slides than in either the stromal slides or the reference slides while no differences in MT immunoreactivity were detected when the stroma and reference tissue slides were compared.
  • A statistically significantly higher vimentin immunoreactivity level was identified in the tumor microenvironment tissue slides than in the tumor tissue slides, and a statistically significantly higher level of vimentin immunoreactivity was identified in the tumor microenvironment slides than in the slides of the reference tissue, while no differences were identified between the adenocarcinoma tissue slides and the reference slides with respect to vimentin immunoreactivity.
  • A statistically significantly higher number of CD56- and CD57-expressing cells were identified in the reference tissue slides than in either the adenocarcinoma or stromal slides.
  • In conclusion, the stroma of salivary gland adenocarcinoma in this study has been characterized by remodeling.

  • However, within two months, the patient developed new lesions on the scalp both adjacent to and separate from the original previously excised area, as well as metastasis to the right parotid gland.
  • The patient received adjuvant radiation therapy both to the scalp lesions and to the parotid gland with apparent control of locoregional disease.
  • We report the rare occurrence of a mucinous carcinoma of the scalp that developed multiple cutaneous tumors caused by in-transit metastases, as well as parotid gland metastases and eventual fatal pulmonary metastases.

  • [Title] Metastatic adenocarcinoma of parotid gland originating from the ampulla of vater: case report and review of the literature.
  • AIM: To report a rare case of metastasis from an adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater to the parotid gland.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: In February 2004, a 61-year-old male underwent Whipple surgery due to a grade II adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater (stage IB:pT2N0M0).
  • Two months after chemotherapy (April 2007), the patient complained of a painless lump in the parotid region that was progressing fast.
  • A head and neck CT depicted a 5 x 4 x 3 cm solid mass that was infiltrating the masseter and pterygoid muscles, the mandible, and parotid gland.
  • Fine needle aspiration showed that the infiltrating mass was due to an adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Metastasis of adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater to the parotid gland has not to our knowledge been previously reported.

  • Although several studies have reported that oropharyngeal infection with HPV may predispose to tumorigenesis, little is known about the etiological factors of salivary gland tumors and the presence of HPV.
  • We studied 9 parotid lesions for HPV infection including an oncocytoma, an acinic cell carcinoma, a high-grade adenocarcinoma, a low-grade polymorphous adenocarcinoma, a Warthin's tumor and 2 pleomorphic adenomas, a lymphoepithelial cyst and a lipoma of the parotid gland.
  • Seven of the 9 parotid lesions were HPV positive while 6 of these 7 had been infected by HPV16 and/or HPV18 oncogenic types.
  • Finally, in situ PCR indicated that HPV16 amplification occurred in the salivary gland tumors.
  • This is the first time that highrisk HPV genotypes are detected in these histological types of parotid lesions, suggesting the possible involvement of the virus in the disease.

  • BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Malignant epithelial parotid tumors have various histopathologic types.
  • Computed tomography (CT) has been widely used to detect parotid masses.
  • This study was to analyze CT features of malignant epithelial parotid tumors to evaluate the diagnostic value of CT in the characterization of malignant epithelial parotid tumors.
  • METHODS: CT reports of 29 patients with malignant epithelial parotid tumors (8 at low grade and 21 at intermediate or high grade), confirmed by histopathology in Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University, were reviewed.
  • Of the 21 cases at intermediate or high grade, 5 were poorly-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 8 were malignant pleomorphic adenoma, 2 were adenocarcinoma, 1 was lymph-epithelial carcinoma, 4 were mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and 1 was adenoidcystic carcinoma; 5 had sharp margin, 7 had partly unsharp margin, and 9 had unsharp margin; 10 had regular contour, and 11 had irregular contour; 17 were enhanced obviously, and the 4 cases of malignant pleomorphic adenoma were enhanced slightly; 9 showed homogeneous appearance, and 12 showed inhomogeneous appearance with low-density areas; 8 had adjacent infiltration (the fat space between tumor and the parotid bed disappeared); 6 had lymph node metastasis.
  • CONCLUSIONS: To some extent, CT features of malignant epithelial parotid tumors are correlated to the differentiation of tumor cells.

  • [Title] Salivary gland tumors in an Iranian population: a retrospective study of 130 cases.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records and case notes of all patients with histologically confirmed salivary gland tumors were reviewed retrospectively from February 1984 to March 2003.
  • Tumors were localized in the parotid gland (63%; n = 82), the submandibular gland (23%; n = 30), and in the minor salivary glands (14%; n = 18).
  • Among malignant tumors, mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most frequent (11.5%; n = 15), followed by adenocarcinoma (10%; n = 13).
  • CONCLUSION: Between benign and malignant salivary gland tumors, frequency of pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was in keeping with studies reported previously.
  • In other salivary gland tumors, however, diversity was obvious and showed significant difference, requiring further studies.

  • BACKGROUND: Our aim was to examine the outcome of patients treated with a planned gamma knife boost after completion of neutron radiotherapy for salivary gland neoplasms involving the base of skull.
  • METHODS: Thirty-four patients with salivary gland neoplasms involving the base of skull were treated from 2001 to 2005 at our institution.
  • The patients had the following characteristics: median age: 54 years (range, 23-80); median follow-up period: 20.5 months (range, 4-55); women-to-men patient ratio: 1.1:1; histology: 29 adenoid cystic, 3 adenocarcinoma, 1 acinic cell, 1 mucoepidermoid; primary sites of disease: 6 nasopharyngeal, 14 paranasal sinuses, 4 parotid gland, 8 oral cavity, 1 lacrimal gland, and 1 auditory canal.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Patients with primary salivary gland neoplasms that involve the base of skull and are treated with neutron radiotherapy alone are at high risk of local recurrence.

  • The parotid gland is the place where benign and malignant tumours may occur.
  • They mostly grow in larger parotid glands.
  • The aim of this work is to analyze operative treatment of parotid gland tumours performed in the years 2004-2008.
  • Between 2004-2008, 128 patients underwent surgical procedure caused by parotid gland tumour, including 72 women (56%) and 56 men (44%) aged between 12-80 (the average age was 49.1); the procedures were performed in the Otolaryngology Department of the Medical Military Institute.
  • The most frequent parotid gland tumour is polymorphic adenoma (50%), the second most frequent one is lympho-adenoma (33.6%).
  • It was discovered that parotid gland tumours were predominantly benign tumours.
  • The most frequent type of parotid gland tumour was the polymorphic adenoma.
  • In the event of suspected malignant parotid gland tumour, it is necessary to conduct intraoperative histopathological examination.

  • There is little information in the English-language literature about the epidemiology of salivary gland neoplasms in the eastern Chinese population.
  • Incidences of lymphoepithelial carcinomas (5%) and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (1%) of malignant tumors were identified.
  • Relatively higher incidences of minor gland tumors and specifically of pleomorphic adenoma in minor glands were noted.
  • There was a high incidence of lymphoepithelial carcinomas but a low incidence of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma.

  • [Title] [Primary sub-mandibular gland tumours: experience based on 68 cases].
  • Sub-mandibulary gland tumours are less common than tumours of the parotid and pose many clinical and therapeutic challengers.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective studies of sub-mandibular gland tumours presenting to our department between 1986 and 2000.
  • For malignant lesions (n= 31) the most frequent were: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (n= 10), epidermoid carcinoma (n= 5), adenocarcinoma (n= 5), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (n= 3), malignant non Hodgkinien lymphoma (n= 5).
  • Treatment was by total surgical excision of the submandibular gland for the begnin tumours.
  • CONCLUSION: Malignity in sub-mandibular gland tumours is more frequent than in the parotid gland.

  • [Title] Epidermal growth factor receptor immunoexpression evaluation in malignant salivary gland tumours.
  • OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression in malignant salivary gland tumours and its possible relationships with clinical and morphological findings, disease course and prognosis.
  • PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study sample comprised 88 patients diagnosed and treated for primary malignant salivary gland tumours between January 1992 and December 2002.
  • CONCLUSION: EGFR is not a useful indicator of prognosis in malignant salivary gland tumours.
  • However, the EGFR expression in salivary gland cancers like adenocarcinomas, undifferentiated carcinomas, mucoepidermoid carcinomas or salivary duct carcinomas suggests that these tumours may be a candidate for therapy investigation directed at EGFR.

  • BACKGROUND: To report the outcomes and early to long term treatment complications among pediatric patients with major salivary gland malignancies treated at a single institution.
  • Patients less than 19 years of age with a diagnosis of a major salivary gland malignancy were identified at the M. D.
  • The majority of tumors arose in the parotid gland (83%), and the most common pathology was mucoepidermoid carcinoma (46%).
  • CONCLUSIONS: Survival of pediatric patients with major salivary gland carcinomas is favorable.

  • PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of postoperative radiation therapy on the clinical course of patients with carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.
  • METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1960 and 2004, 63 patients were treated with definitive surgery for carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.
  • Adenocarcinoma (29 patients), salivary duct carcinoma (16 patients), and adenoid cystic carcinoma (9 patients) were the most common malignant subtypes.

  • BACKGROUND: Unusual sites of metastasis to the parotid gland and face are reported in patients with colorectal cancer, but the localization to both sites at the same time has never been described so far.
  • CASE REPORT: Here, we describe the case of a 76-year-old woman with a T3N1M0 G2 rectal adenocarcinoma, treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy performed at suboptimal dosages due to unacceptable toxicity.
  • At the end of the program, the re-staging demonstrated the presence of metastasis in both the left parotid gland and subcutaneously on the frontal region of her face while the primary locoregional tumour manifestation was radiologically down-staged (reduction in N staging from N1 to N0).
  • CONCLUSIONS: Metastatic tumours in the parotid gland are uncommon with a higher incidence of primary sites of the head and neck.
  • Parotid involvement of rectal adenocarcinoma is also extremely rare, and concomitant involvement of both the parotid gland and the face was not previously described.
