MedlinePlus Health Information. consumer health - Colorectal Cancer.

  • [Source] The source of this record is MEDLINE®, a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • [Title] Metastasis to the sinonasal tract from sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma.
  • INTRODUCTION: Metastatic adenocarcinoma from the gastrointestinal tract to the sinonasal tract is rare.
  • The histological morphology of this lesion is indistinguishable from the colonic variant of primary sinus adenocarcinoma or intestinal-type adenocarcinoma (ITAC).
  • CLINICAL PICTURE: This is a report of a case of metastatic adenocarcinoma of colorectal origin to the paranasal sinuses in a 52-year-old female who was previously treated for adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon.
  • A histologic study of the surgical specimen from the sinonasal cavity demonstrated a tumour identical to the patient's prior primary tumour of the colon.
  • The sinonasal neoplastic tissue showed marked positivity for carcinoembryonic antigen and expressed cytokeratin 20, which differentiates metastatic colonic adenocarcinoma from ITAC.
  • TREATMENT/OUTCOME: The patient received palliative radiation but died 3 months after the diagnosis.
  • CONCLUSION: Distinguishing metastatic adenocarcinoma from gastrointestinal tract from ITAC can be difficult.

8. Kim S, Martin C, Galanko J, Woosley JT, Schroeder JC, Keku TO, Satia JA, Halabi S, Sandler RS: Use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and distal large bowel cancer in whites and African Americans. Am J Epidemiol; 2008 Dec 1;168(11):1292-300
COS Scholar Universe. author profiles.

  • [Source] The source of this record is MEDLINE®, a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • Despite the belief that the etiology of and risk factors for rectal cancer might differ from those for colon cancer, relatively few studies have examined rectal cancer in relation to use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • The authors evaluated the association between NSAIDs and distal large bowel cancer in African Americans and whites, using data from a population-based case-control study of 1,057 incident cases of adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon, rectosigmoid junction, and rectum and 1,019 controls from North Carolina (2001-2006).
  • In addition, the strength of the association with NSAIDs varied by tumor location, suggesting more potent effects for rectal and rectosigmoid cancers than for sigmoid cancer.

MedlinePlus Health Information. consumer health - Streptococcal Infections.

  • [Source] The source of this record is MEDLINE®, a database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • BACKGROUND: Even though the relationship between certain bacterial infections and neoplastic lesions of the colon is well-recognized, this knowledge has not been sufficiently translated into routine practice yet.
  • Preoperative colonoscopy, staging exams and subsequent surgery demonstrated a stenotic adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon, invading the left urinary tract and the homolateral bladder wall, with regional lymph nodes involvement and massive bilobar liver metastases (T4N1M1).
  • After Hartmann's rectosigmoidectomy and despite systemic chemotherapy, a rapid progression occurred and the patient survived for only 5 months after diagnosis.
  • CONCLUSION: As this case illustrates, in the unusual setting of a Streptococcus bovis infection, it is necessary to timely and carefully rule out occult colon cancer and other malignancies during hospitalization and, if a tumor is not found, to schedule endoscopic follow-up.
  • Rigorous application of these recommendations in the case described would have likely led to an earlier diagnosis of cancer and maybe saved the patient's life.

  • [Title] Cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix: an incidental perioperatory finding in a patient with adenocarcinoma of the ascending and sigmoid colon: case report and review of literature.
  • We present a unique case of primary cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix occurring concurrently with adenocarcinoma of the colon, and overview the clinical and therapeutic difficulties posed by this rare entity.
  • Degenerated adenomatous polyp of the ascending colon and mucinous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon invading the parietal peritoneum of the uterine and vagina was diagnosed.
  • CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative diagnosis of an underlying malignancy in a mucocele is important for patient management, but is difficult to reach by imaging studies alone.
  • Synchronous colon cancer may occur in patients with appendiceal mucoceles.
  • In such patients, the colon should be investigated.
